Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the restoration of teeth retained through root canal treatment, from the perspective of adhesive dentistry. The challenge of adhesion to root dentin is first explained and guidance provided on assessment of the restorability of endodontically treated teeth. The types of prefabricated passive post are then described in detail. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are outlined, with identification of the factors that influence post selection. Further topics include the ferrule effect, evidence‐based clinical applications of fiber posts and new methods to lute fiber posts to the root canal without dentin adhesives. In addition, frequent myths are identified and dispelled. All aspects are illustrated with clinical and laboratory images, diagrams and high-resolution electron microscopy photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to meet the needs of both dental students and dentists by providing succinct and quickly retrievable answers to common dental questions. Students will find both that it clearly presents the particulars which should be familiar to every dentist and that it enables them to see the big picture and contextualize information introduced to them in the future. Practicing dentists, on the other hand, will employ the book as a daily reference to source information on important topics, materials, techniques, and conditions. The book is neither discipline nor specialty specific. The first part is wide ranging and covers the essentials of dental practice while the second part addresses individual specialties and the third is devoted to emergency dental treatment. Whether as a handy resource in the student s backpack or as a readily available tool on the office desk, this reference manual fills an important gap in the dental literature.

Book excerpt: Traditional dental materials such as metals and ceramics have a number of disadvantages such as cost and the significant damage caused in grinding to make space for such reconstructions. Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) are a novel group of dental materials characterized by fibrous fillers that are being increasingly used in place of traditional prosthodontic materials. They allow fabrication of minimally invasive, lightweight, durable and biocompatible restorations. This book will provide clinicians and students with theoretical and clinical guidelines to use the FRCs for dental applications. The book begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of FRCs in dentistry. Further chapters cover the treatment possibilities, fabrication and application procedures of FRCs, followed by information on care and maintenance. Explores the mechanism of function of fibre-reinforced composites Presents comprehensive information on the expanding field of fibre-reinforced composites and their increasing use in dentistry

Book excerpt: The treatment objectives in the restoration of an endontically treated tooth are maximum retention of post and core and to create a design in which the tooth is preserved when the restoration fails. This study investigated the effects of different ferrule designs on the fracture resistance of teeth restored with a composite core but with no prefabricated post were included in the study to assess the necssity of a post in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth.

New Tooth Identification Labeling Exercises, featuring over 80 step-by-step questions that cover the decisions required to identify a tooth, ask students to identify tooth anatomy (class, facial size, arch, type, mesial, and universal number). Additional board-style Learning Exercises in Chapters 2 -5 address the tooth identification and universal numbering system to better prepare students to pass board exams. New content addresses specific topics now included on national board exams, such as paranasal sinuses and dental anomalies. A substantially updated art and design program introduces "red dot" markers for tooth identification and new color photos that better illustrate specific characteristics or traits of the tooth. New Glossary of Key Terms appears at the back of the book for easy reference. Halmark Features: A unique comparative approach to tooth anatomy in Chapters 1-6 helps students understand the similarities and differences of each class of tooth. Topic Lists open each chapter in an outline format to orient students to the information that follows. Section-opening Learning Objectives allow students to read with a purpose and to assess their mastery of important knowledge and skills. Review Questions and Answers inserted throughout chapters help students assess their understanding of anatomical terminology and concepts and prepare for certification examinations. Learning Exercises that help students understand and apply topics include interactive activities, such as examining extracted teeth or tooth models or performing specific self- or partner examinations. Advanced Learning Exercises in Chapter 13 ask students to draw and sketch teeth or carve teeth from wax to help them become intimately familiar with tooth shape and terminology. Additional board-style Learning Exercises in Chapters 2 -5 address tooth identification and the universal numbering system to better prepare students for success on board exams. Chapter-ending Critical Thinking Questions give students an opportunity to apply what they've learned to more complex questions/exercises. A free, printable online dental anatomy study guide helps students master key information and includes traits, charts, and reference information"--Provided by publisher.

The coverage encompasses applications in primary and permanent teeth, in specialties as diverse as restorative dentistry, endodontics, paediatric dentistry, dental traumatology, and prosthetic dentistry. BiodentineTM application both in vital pulp therapy and endodontic procedures is illustrated and clinical step by step protocols are provided. The book provides a detailed update on BiodentineTM use to preserve the pulp vitality in direct/indirect pulp capping, pulpotomy and irreversible pulpitis treatment. It also details BiodentineTM use for non-vital teeth treatment in indications such as root/furcation perforation repair, apexification as well as in regenerative endodontic procedures. BiodentineTM: Properties and Clinical Applications will be a rich source of guidance and information for all dentists as well as dental students and academics.

Book excerpt: The specialty of endodontics has evolved and changed over the years like many other dental and medical fraternities bringing it in to the twenty first century with greater precision, fewer procedural errors, less discomfort to the patient. The ultimate objective of endodontic therapy is to perform a three dimensional obturation to prevent reinfection. One of the most frustrating complications to endodontic therapy is vertical root fracture. Gutta percha has been used as the gold standard to obturate roots, however it does not seem to enhance the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. Recently two challenging strategies have been employed to effectively reinforce the endodontically treated tooth structure. A new material Resilon was introduced as a better alternative to Gutta percha. Also a second strategy was to produce a gutta percha resin coating that is bondable to a hydrophilic methacrylate based dual cured resin sealer EndoREZ. In light of incidence of vertical root fracture associated with gutta percha filling techniques, this study was undertaken to determine the fracture resistance of roots endodontically treated with different resin based adhesive systems.
