Book Synopsis Going to Extremes by : National Research Council
Download or read book Going to Extremes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-10-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced polymer matrix composites (PMC) have many advantages such as light weight and high specific strength that make them useful for many aerospace applications. Enormous uncertainty exists, however, in predicting long-term changes in properties of PMCs under extreme environmental conditions, which has limited their use. To help address this issue, the Department of Defense requested a study from the NRC to identify the barriers and limitations to the use of PMCs in extreme environments. The study was to focus on issues surrounding methodologies for predicting long-term performance. This report provides a review of the challenges facing application of PMCs in extreme environments, the current understanding of PMC properties and behavior, an analysis of the importance of data in developing effective models, and recommendations for improving long-term predictive methodologies.

Book Synopsis Polymer Dispersions and Their Industrial Applications by : Dieter Urban
Download or read book Polymer Dispersions and Their Industrial Applications written by Dieter Urban and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2002 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aqueous polymer dispersions are environmentally friendly and therefore they have replaced in many applications polymers dissolved in organic solvents. This substitution process is still ongoing. This book discusses the world of aqueous polymer dispersions from the viewpoint of how they are applied. For a better understanding it starts with a general description of the synthesis of polymer dispersions and their characterization. The following chapters are dedicated to a wide variety of applications, including history, modern processes, and typical formulations and performance. The selection and the usage of a polymer dispersion are not uniform around the world because of historical and regional differences of the technical developments and marketing demands. Leading scientists from industry contributed to this book ensuring that practical issues are emphasized.
Book Synopsis Modification of Polymer Properties by : Carlos Federico Jasso-Gastinel
Download or read book Modification of Polymer Properties written by Carlos Federico Jasso-Gastinel and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modification of Polymer Properties provides, for the first time, in one title, the latest information on gradient IPNs and gradient copolymers. The book covers the broad range of polymer modification routes in a fresh, current view representing a timely addition to the technical literature of this important area. Historically, blends, copolymers, or filled polymers have been developed to meet specific properties, or to optimize the cost/properties relationship. Using the gradient structure approach with conventional radical polymerization, it has been shown that it is possible to optimize properties if appropriate gradients in the composition of copolymer chains are obtained. An overview of the gradient structure approach for designing polymers has not appeared in the recent literature and this title covers the different methods used to modify properties, offering the whole range of ways to modify polymers in just one volume and making this an attractive option for a wide audience of practitioners. The approach for each chapter is to explain the fundamental principles of preparation, cover properties modification, describe future research and applications as examples of materials that may be prepared for specific applications, or that are already in use, in present day applications. The book is for readers that have a basic background in polymer science, as well as those interested in the different ways to combine or modify polymer properties. Provides an integrated view on how to modify polymer properties Presents the entire panorama of polymer properties modification in one reference, covering the essential information in each topic Includes the optimization of properties using gradients in polymers composition or structure
Book Synopsis Chemistry and Technology of Water-Soluble Polymers by : C.A. Finch
Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Water-Soluble Polymers written by C.A. Finch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the biochemist, water is, of course, the only solvent worthy of consideration, because natural macromolecules exhibit their remarkable conformational properties only in aqueous media. Probably because of these remarkable properties, biochemists do not tend to regard proteins, nucleotides and polysaccharides as polymers in the way that real polymer scientists regard methyl methacrylate and polyethylene. The laws of polymer statistics hardly apply to native biopolymers. Between these two powerful camps, lies the No-man's land of water soluble synthetic polymers: here, we must also include natural polymers which have been chemically modified. The scientific literature of these compounds is characterized by a large number of patents, which is usually a sign of little basic understanding, of 'know-how' rather than of 'know-why'. Many of the physical properties of such aqueous solutions are intriguing: the polymer may be completely miscible with water, and yet water is a 'poor' solvent, in terms of polymer parlance. ~kiny of the polymers form thermorever sible gels on heating or cooling. The phenomena of exothermic mixing and salting-in are common features of such systems: neither can be fully explained by the available theories. Finally, the eccentric behaviour of polyelectrolytes is well documented. Despite the lack of a sound physico-chemical foundation there is a general awareness of the importance of water soluble vinyl, acrylic, polyether, starch and cellulose derivatives, as witnessed again by ~he vast patent literature.
