Book excerpt: BACKGROUND: In an effort to improve overhand throw velocity in baseball pitchers, weighted implement training, which utilizes balls that are heavier or lighter than a competition ball, have been employed. Weighted ball programs have previously been used in baseball pitchers ranging from high school to professional with varying ball weights with mixed results (Straub, 1966; Brose and Hanson, 1967; DeRenne, 1985; DeRenne, 1990; van den Tillaar and Ettema, 2011). PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a commercially available weighted ball program on the throwing velocity of collegiate baseball pitchers over the course of an off-season. METHODS: This retrospective study examined pitch velocity for 56 varsity collegiate baseball pitchers at the University of Mississippi between 2012-2015. The weighted implement (WI) group (n=35) used weighted implement training in addition to normal throwing activities throughout the off-season while the normal throwing (NT) group (n=21) participated in normal throwing activities only. The WI group used baseballs that were 20% overweight (6 ounces), 20% underweight (4 ounces), and regulation weight (5 ounces) while the NT group used only the regulation weight baseball. A repeated measures ANOVA was conducted. Statistical significance was set at p?0.05. RESULTS: Pitch velocity did not significantly increase from the beginning of the off-season to the end of the off-season (p=0.071) for either group and there was no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.271). CONCLUSION: In varsity collegiate pitchers currently involved in general and sport specific training, the current weighted implement throwing program is no more effective than a normal throwing protocol.

Book excerpt: Downright Filthy Pitching - The Science of Effective Velocity - This is a study of baseball and softball pitching speeds and how location dramatically changes the reaction time of pitches to the hitter. This is the first in a series of three books covering this fascinating new science that has already changed the game at every level. This series is about answering some questions that have been a mystery since the very first at bat in organized baseball. Major League pitchers, hitters, pitching coaches and managers have embraced Effective Velocity to help them enhance their approach to the game sine 2004. Collegiate coaches in both baseball and softball have revamped both their hitting and pitching philosophies based on this exciting new concept. NCAA championships - MLB Division Championships and countless other milestones have been accomplished using the laws that govern the confrontation between pitcher and hitter; Effective Velocity. Discover the reason why pitchers can execute a pitch in what is thought of as a perfect location and it ends up a homerun. Find out why hitters swing and miss belt high fastballs right down the middle of the plate one day and hit out of the park the next. Are taller pitchers really more Filthy? Is outside fastball really the best pitch in baseball? Is movement the most crucial factor in a pitcher's success? These and many other answers await you in this series describing this brand new paradigm for baseball and softball.

Book excerpt: Recognizing the importance of pitching for the overall success of a baseball team, Bill Thurston, the 40-year head coach at Amherst College, devloped a pitching drill program aimed at improving pitching technique and increasing ball release velocity. The purpose of this study was to investigate if Thurston's pitching drills change a pitcher's cocking position and result in an increase in the release velocity of a pitcher's fastball. Twelve college baseball players (eight in experimental group, four in control group) from the Bemidji State University baseball team volunteered to participate in the study. All subjects completed pre- and post- testing sessions during which the fast ball delivery was video recorded with two S-VHS cameras to determine selected kinematic characteristics of the cocking position, a JUGS radar gun was used to measure the ball release velocity. The experimental group completed an eight-week throwing program between testing sessions. No tested variable showed significant differences from pre- to post-test for either group with one exception. The control group showed significant changes for the hip orientation. Especially the mean release velocity for the pre- and post-test were very similar for the experimental (72.4 (#1.4) mph and 76 (#3.7) mph, respectively) and control group (71.8 (#2.9) mph and 72.9 (#2.2) mph respectively). This study showed that an out-of-season throwing program by itself did not produce any performance improvements. Areas that possibly influenced the outcome of this study were the number of subject used in the study, the age of the subjects, the duration of the training program, and the lack of one-on-one individual instruction and of a strength and conditioning program. Although there is scientific information regarding three-dimensional analyses of pitchers the results from this study clearly show that more research is needed focusing on the effectiveness of different training programs. Pitchers and coaches might use the practical implications of this study as a guide to developing and selecting training programs for pitchers.

Illustrated with anecdotes about baseball's greatest power pitchers, it describes how they were able to achieve phenomenal fastball velocity and record-breaking strikeout numbers. How was a 17-year-old rookie named Bob Feller able to strike out Major League batters in record numbers? How do the tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the arm and shoulder work to amplify power for greater pitch velocity? How was minor league pitcher Steve Dalkowski able to throw the most phenomenal fastball ever seen (or heard)? Why do young pitchers with exceptional velocity often issue walks at exceptional rates? Why do good pitchers occasionally pitch badly? Why is exceptional hand speed important? What is it about overhand throwing that causes elbow and shoulder injuries? How can a pitcher achieve greater endurance and durability? What is the most reliable way to increase fastball velocity? This book addresses these and other questions for pitchers, coaches, managers, trainers, and fans.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:The purpose of the current study was to determine whether the inclusion of rhythmic stabilization exercises for the shoulder would improve pitching velocity in collegiate pitchers. Varsity and sub-varsity collegiate pitchers (N = 13) participated in the study. Each athlete took part in two separate test occasions in this repeated measures design. In the first of these sessions, each athlete threw 10 consecutive four-seam fastballs from the wind up and was measured on baseline pitching velocity. During the second test occasion, each athlete participated in two rhythmic stabilization exercises, then immediately threw 10 consecutive fastballs in which velocity was measured. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Differences in core strength and ball velocity in division III collegiate baseball pitchers. M.S. in Strength and Conditioning, 2014. 135pp. (B. Thompson) The research investigation was designed to determine if differences existed between core strength and ball velocity in division III collegiate baseball pitchers. Participants from two collegiate baseball teams (N = 18) were randomly assigned to participate in a 7-week core strengthening protocol (experimental) or continue with the traditional baseball training program (control). All subjects participated in pre- and posttesting. Subjects assigned to the experimental group took part in core training two times per week for seven weeks with an unloading week during week five. Subjects assigned to the control group did not participate in additional core training, however, remained involved in standard baseball activities. No significant (p > .05) differences were found between the experimental group and the control group in the variances of pre- and posttesting scores for ball velocity, the bench trunk curl test (BTC) and the double leg lowering test (DLLT). Three 2 x 2 mixed factorial ANOVAS were computed. Multiple factors may have played a role in returning unexpected results such as time of year, maximum velocity and fatigue.

Book excerpt: The ability to throw at higher velocities with proper mechanics is very advantageous for baseball pitchers to increase performance and decrease injury risk. Pitching utilizes the movement of energy through the kinetic chain, wherein momentum is generated by the proximal core segments of the body and transferred to the distal segments of the throwing shoulder and elbow to produce ball velocity. Medicine ball throws (MBT) have been used as a training method for rotational throwing and striking athletes to improve core strength and power. Rotational MBT are sport-specific for baseball pitching because of the similar explosive sequential muscle activation of the pelvis, torso, and arms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a side-rotational MBT exercise on pitching biomechanics and ball velocity when performed immediately prior to pitching as a method of post-activation potentiation (PAP). High school, college, and professional aged pitchers (n = 6, age 19.5 ± 3.6 years) were randomly assigned to MBT and control (CON) groups. Both groups threw five pre-trial and five post-trial maximal effort fastballs, with the MBT group performing one set of six side-rotational MBT at maximum effort in between the pre and post-trials while the CON group rested. All pitching trials were recorded by a three-dimensional motion capture system at 240 Hz, from which five temporal, four kinematic, and three kinetic variables were calculated. A 2 x 2 mixed ANOVA for each dependent variable was used for comparisons between and within groups. There were significant interactions between groups and time for peak trunk rotational velocity (p = .049), peak elbow extension velocity (p = .014), and maximum external rotation torque (p = .042). These results may warrant further research into MBT as a method for warming up and eliciting a PAP response for pitching.
