Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The addition of organic residues to the soil may modify the amounts of plant available phosphorus (P) found in this ssytem. These studies were undertaken to evaluate the suitability of the sorption isotherm technique for estimating the amounts of inorganic P required for optimum plant growth, the correlation of P availability with the amount of P extracted by three chemical methods, and with the activity of two phosphatase enzymes, when soils were amended with organic materials. Acid phosphatase and phosphodiesterase activities were also compared with the P availability to plants. Soil phosphodiesterase activity correlated better with corn yield and plant uptake than acid phosphatase activity. The correlation of phosphodiesterase activity with microbial activity might be used to indicate the contribution of the soil organic P pool in the P supply to the plant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochar Application: Essential Soil Microbial Ecology outlines the cutting-edge research on the interactions of complex microbial populations and their functional, structural, and compositional dynamics, as well as the microbial ecology of biochar application to soil, the use of different phyto-chemical analyses, possibilities for future research, and recommendations for climate change policy. Biochar, or charcoal produced from plant matter and applied to soil, has become increasingly recognized as having the potential to address multiple contemporary concerns, such as agricultural productivity and contaminated ecosystem amelioration, primarily by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and improving soil functions. Biochar Application is the first reference to offer a complete assessment of the various impacts of biochar on soil and ecosystems, and includes chapters analyzing all aspects of biochar technology and application to soil, from ecogenomic analyses and application ratios to nutrient cycling and next generation sequencing. Written by a team of international authors with interdisciplinary knowledge of biochar, this reference will provide a platform where collaborating teams can find a common resource to establish outcomes and identify future research needs throughout the world. Includes multiple tables and figures per chapter to aid in analysis and understanding Includes a comprehensive table of the methods used within the contents, ecosystems, contaminants, future research, and application opportunities explored in the book Includes knowledge gaps and directions of future research to stimulate further discussion in the field and in climate change policy Outlines the latest research on the interactions of complex microbial populations and their functional, structural, and compositional dynamics Offers an assessment of the impacts of biochar on soil and ecosystems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive and balanced overview of soil amendments and their effect on the environment. It encompasses both positive and negative aspects of chemical fertilizers that supply nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, lime, micronutrients, and trace metals. Pros and cons are discussed with respect to the optimal and the most environmentally sound use of soil amendments, and guidance is provided on how to minimize the environmental effects of amendments. Natural fertilizers, including manure, sludge, fly ash, phosphogypsum, and byproduct gypsum are also discussed. Alternative agronomic practices and biotechnology that ameliorate or minimize potential adverse effects of fertilizer use are examined in detail. This authoritative and up-to-date treatise is multidisciplinary in nature and international in scope, a powerful reference tool for researchers, a thorough guide for practitioners and policy makers, and an excellent text book for academic courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this chapter is soil chemistry. The chapter is entitled Processes and Factors Affecting Phosphorus (P) Adsorption in Soils. The chapter aims to give an overview of the major mechanisms responsible for phosphate sorption (i.e., adsorption and absorption of phosphate) in soils, particularly of acid soils. According to studies conducted by some soil scientists, the major soil factors affecting P sorption are time, soil pH, soil organic matter, and iron and aluminium oxides of soils. Studies conducted indicated that adsorption of the P increases as the P ages in the soil. Soil pH affects phosphate adsorption but the effect is limited for adsorption by soils in the pH range of 4,Äì8. Organic matter may affect P adsorption in two ways: indirectly by inhibiting iron oxide crystallisation and directly by competing for adsorption sites. On per mole basis, oxalate extractable aluminium oxides adsorb nearly twice as much P as oxalate extractable iron oxides due to poorer crystallinity (higher specific area) of the aluminium oxides compared to the iron oxides and also to a higher charge of the former. The chapter also highlights the pedotransfer functions (PTFs) of Borggaard, which can be used to calculate for the P adsorption in highly weathered acid soils.

Book excerpt: Aperpetual bestseller, this third edition remains the obvious choice for those instructors who strive to make their teaching applicable to contemporary issues. The three authors, all teaching professors distinguished in soil science, have updated this student favorite to include a greater number of even more relevant topics. Responding to requests, they have also placed an increased emphasis on management issues. As with previous editions, the third edition offers students in soil or environmental science an overview of soil science, hydrology, atmospheric chemistry, and pollutant classification. The text moves from the theoretical to the practical with an abundance of contemporary examples, such as an exploration of allowable pesticide concentrations in drinking water and an inquiry into soil contamination from the trace elements in organic by-products. Also considered are the use of soil carbon sequestration as a remedy for global climate change, and the effects of acid precipitation on forestation. NEW TO THE THIRD EDITION: · New chapters on nutrient management planning, and the environmental testing of soil, plants, water, and air · Additional and revised case studies that continue to relate academic content to real-life situations, while inspiring students with real –life challenges to solve · Eight-page color inset · Direct encouragement and links to fully access the Internet as a resource for the most up-to-date findings Always Relevant, Always Interesting The text also covers environmentally-related current events, fostering discussion of the political, economic, and regulatory aspects of environmental issues, the human side of environmental problems, the use and misuse of the scientific method, and potential bias in the presentation of facts. Students in soil science, environmental science, chemistry, biology, geology, and other disciplines will gain valuable insight from this multifaceted text.
