Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. Book excerpt: Nuclear research and power reactors are now being designed which must operate at temperatures and coolant environments dictating the use of nickel-base and refractory metal alloys for structural components, fuel cladding, and power equipment. Investigation of the effects of irradiation and environment upon the mechanical properties of several nickel-base and refractory metal alloys has been initiated at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory. Tension specimens of Inconel 600, Inconel 625, Inconel 702, Inconel 718, Incoloy 800, Hastelloy C, Hastelloy N, Hastelloy X-280, and Hastelloy R-235 have been irradiated to exposures exceeding 1 x 1021 nvt (E > 1 Mev) in 50 C water, 280 C water, and 740 C gaseous environments. These specimens have been tested in the pre- and postirradiated conditions at room temperature, 300 C, and 650 C. Several metallurgical conditions of the materials have also been examined and the changes in mechanical properties due to the irradiation have been noted. The Cb-1 Zr, Cb-752, TZM Mo, and W-25 Re refractory metals have been irradiated at ambient temperatures, and the effects of irradiation upon the mechanical properties have been evaluated at room temperature and 1090 C. The data obtained for both the nickel-base and refractory metal alloys tested indicate that there is a marked effect upon the mechanical properties due to the thermal environment. In addition to this effect, effects due to the irradiation were also found. Comparison of the elevated temperature data to the room temperature data shows a marked decrease in both strength and ductility. Metallographic examination of these materials is continuing in an attempt to find the cause of these damages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of neutron exposure to 3.0 x 1018 neutrons/cm2 on the mechanical properties of thorium and thorium-carbon alloy are described. Tensile measurements were done at six different test temperatures from 4°K to 503°K and at two strain rates. Thorium and thorium-carbon alloy are shown to display typical radiation hardening like other face-centered cubic metals. The yield drop phenomenon of the thorium-carbon alloy is unchanged after irradiation. The variation of shear stress and effective shear stress with test temperature was fitted to Seeger's and Fleischer's equations for irradiated and unirradiated thorium and thorium-carbon alloy. Neutron irradiation apparently contributes an athermal component to the yield strength. However, some thermal component is detected in the low temperature range. Strain-rate parameter is increased and activation volume is decreased slightly for both kinds of metal after irradiation.

Book excerpt: Test data are presented from the first three sets of a series of V-notch Charpy impact specimens irradiated with neutrons in the Dresden Nuclear Power Reactor to measure the mechanical property changes of the pressure vessel steel. A number of groups of impact specimens were machined from the actual reactor pressure vessel steel, ASTM Specification A 302 grade B plate. They were placed, in sealed capsules, in the interior of the reactor pressure vessel where they were exposed to intense neutron irradiation at 545 F, the operating temperature of the reactor. Impact transition curves were determined on four groups of specimens covering a range of neutron exposure from 0 to 1019 nvt > 1 Mev. Based on the 30 ft-lb transition, the maximum increase in transition temperature measured was 150 F. Additional impact specimens are being irradiated in the reactor and will be removed periodically and tested over a 30-yr period.

Book excerpt: Specimens of Nimonic PE-16, a ?'-hardened austenitic alloy, were irradiated in the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) in order to determine the effect of neutron irradiation on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Specimens with two different aging treatments were irradiated at temperatures ranging from 650 to 823 K and fluences ranging from 1.2 x 1026 neutrons (n)/m2 to 4.0 x 1026 n/m2. The aging treatments were: (A) 2h at 1313 K + 2 h at 1073 K + 16 h at 973 K; and (B) 4 h at 1313 K + 1 h at 1173 K + 8 h at 1023 K. Postirradiation transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the presence of voids in all irradiated specimens. No difference in the fluence dependence of swelling at an irradiation temperature of 773 K was observed between the specimens with Preirradiation Treatment A and the specimens with Preirradiation Treatment B. In contrast, the temperature dependence of swelling appears to be sensitive to the particular preirradiation aging treatment used. TEM also shows that existing precipitates coarsen slightly during irradiation and that precipitation of ?'-precipitates occurs on irradiation-produced dislocation loops and voids.
