Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether high school track runners who regularly listen to music in competition (regular listeners), and those who do not (non-regular listeners), differentially perceive their pre-performance arousal (i.e., tension, enthusiasm, anxiety, energy) and subjective aspects of their performance (i.e., perceived exertion and pain, and their evaluation of the performance) under different conditions of listening or not listening to self-selected music prior to a maximal running effort. In addition, the coach's evaluation of each athlete's performance was examined. A significant multivariate interaction emerged from the analysis of pre-performance arousal. Disordinal interactions indicated that regular listeners in the No Music condition, and non-regular listeners in the Music condition reported greater anxiety and tension than their counterparts who were in the condition that reflected their usual music listening preference (e.g., regular listeners in the Music condition). An ordinal interaction indicated that all participants in the Music condition reported greater enthusiasm, however the effect was more pronounced for nonregular listeners. A multivariate analysis of the subjective aspects of performance yielded a main effect for listener group; regular listeners reported less perceived pain during performance than non-regular listeners. A series of correlations was used to examine the relationship between the pre-performance arousal variables and the subjective performance variables for participants in each music intervention condition. For both conditions, higher tension was associated with greater exertion, and also with greater pain. For participants in the No Music condition, higher pre-performance energy was related with less reported pain during performance. For participants in the Music condition, greater tension was associated with higher coach ratings of performance, and higher enthusiasm was related with greater perceived pain. Participant responses to two open-ended questions regarding the effect of music emphasized the benefits of improved mental state through mood, emotion, and focus, and improved physical state by calming nerves or getting pumped up. Overall, the aforementioned findings suggest that listening to music may influence aspects of pre-performance arousal state and it may also affect the arousal-performance relationship. In addition, it is clear that athlete-participants believed in the positive effects of listening to music.

Objective: To determine if spontaneous music tempo affected running performance (eg. Velocity, heart rate, ratings perceived exertion - RPE, and VO2). Methods: Fifteen apparently healthy college aged subjects ran two, 31 minutes experimental runs on an indoor 200 meter track. The subjects listened to a 31 minute playlist created by the investigator for one of the runs, and 31 minute minutes of no tempo music for the other run. The playlist consisted of two songs having no-tempo (0 bpm), two songs with slow tempo (100 bpm), two songs with moderate tempo (100-129 bpm), and two songs with fast tempo (130 bpm). The order of the runs was randomized. Oxygen consumption (VO2) was integrated every 30 seconds. Velocity was calculated by manually timing 100 meter split times. HR and RPE were recorded at the end of each of the songs. Results: There was a significant increase in running velocity when faster tempo songs were being played. There was no significant difference found in HR, VO2, or RPE in relationship to the tempo being played. However, practical significance was noted as there was not an increase in RPE with the increase in velocity. Conclusions: Music can be used while running to increase the intensity or velocity of the run. However, the effects of music on running performance are not as distinct as cycling due to mechanical constraints of running. Due to the mechanical constraints of running, it is thought that music increases running intensity through general arousal to the beat or tempo.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine if listening to self selected music while running on a treadmill would have an effect on time to exhaustion and RPE in male and female runners. SUBJECTS: Seventeen volunteers, 6 males (x age = 25.7 + 4.0) and 11 females (x age = 21.7 + 1.3) between the ages of 18 and 35 participated in this study. Subjects had no lower extremity injury with in the last 6 months, ran 6 miles a week, and had treadmill experience. METHODS: Subjects were randomly assigned to either the music or no music test condition. All subjects were tested under both conditions three days apart. The test began with a 2 minute warm-up at 3 mph and 0% grade. The speed was increased 1 mph each minute until 80% - 85% of maximal predicted heart rate was reached. Time recording and music began when the subject maintained this heart rate for 21 seconds. The speed remained constant. RPE was recorded at one minute intervals until volitional exhaustion was reached. A 2-5 minute cool down at 3 mph and 0% grade was performed when volitional exhaustion was reached. ANALYSIS: A repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant increase in RPE level. A Fisher Protected t LSD multiple comparisons revealed that RPE scores significantly increased throughout the test. No significant difference was found between gender and RPE level. A second ANOVA revealed significantly longer times to exhaustion when subjects ran with music than without music. No significant difference was found between male and female subjects with respect to time to exhaustion. CONCLUSION: Listening to self selected music while exercising prolongs a subject's time to exhaustion. Self selected music has no effect on RPE values reported by male and female subjects. Using music in clinical settings may increase motivation and performance.

Specifically, listening to music during exercise enhances performance, increases motivation, improves affect, and optimizes arousal. Researchers have identified several elements of music that may moderate this relationship, including lyrics. However, few studies to date have examined the influence of motivational lyrics on psychological and physiological states during exercise. Thus, the primary purpose was to investigate the effects of lyrics in music on motivation, affect, arousal, and perceived exertion during moderate intensity cycling. Thirty (Mage = 21.0 ± 2.9 years old) college-aged individuals performed three, 8-min acute bouts of moderate-intensity exercise on a cycle ergometer during music with lyrics (ML), music without lyrics (MNL), and no music control (MC) conditions. Measures of motivation, affect, arousal, and perceived exertion were taken before and after a 6-min warm-up, every 2-min during the exercise bout, and following a 2-min cool-down. For ML and MNL conditions, participants reported higher motivation, affect, and arousal during exercise relative to the MC condition. As expected, RPE increased throughout the exercise period, with no condition differences observed. Additionally, there were no differences in responses between the ML and MNL conditions. Collectively, these results suggest that music, regardless of lyrical content, can enhance psychological responses during exercise. The current findings may help address common exercise barriers and inform exercise practitioners on music selection to improve exercise adherence.

Therefore, finding ways to increase physical activity is a popular area of research. Researchers have found that using dissociative attentional strategies is effective in increasing physical activity. According to research, when administered individually music and video (dissociative strategies) are both effective in decreasing an individual's perceived exertion and increasing performance at low to moderate intensity activity. However, at vigorous intensities the results are less consistent. The potential effects of music and video presented simultaneously have not been compared to the effects of either in isolation. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in attentional focus and perceived exertion during vigorous intensity exercise as a function of being exposed to music, video, both (music and video), or nothing. Results showed that at vigorous intensity, participants in the condition that received both music and video perceived significantly lower exertion (RPE) and has a significantly more dissociative focus than did participants in the other three conditions. There was no significant difference amongst the other conditions. It was concluded that even at vigorous intensity exercise, a participant could use music and video to enhance their use of dissociative strategies and to perceive less exertion. The music the athletes listened to was systematically increased over a three-week period to determine if the track athletes' times became faster. The participants of this study were measured during practice for the times in which they ran the 400 meters, or one lap around a track. The 27 track athletes that were a part of this study were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n=12) or the control group (n=15). The experimental group was provided with Compact Disks (CD) of their music preferences with altered tempos. The control group practiced two times a week without music. The experimental group listened to their selected music twice a week. Both groups were timed once a week (Mondays) during the four-week period. Both groups were made up of members of the track and the cross-country teams. The cross-country team's practice schedule consisted of Monday speed workouts. On Mondays the cross-country team would run 5 to 6 400 meters. The cross-country team would run 400 meters and then have a short rest period before they were to run it again. The track team ran two 400 meters with rest in between each day in addition to their practice schedule of speed drills for turn-over, hurdle drills, jumping exercises, etc. to help build up their stamina. Graphic analysis of the data revealed differences during Monday practices of those involved in the experimental group. The experimental group was able to decrease their times while running 400 meters by an average of half a minute. The control group's times slightly decreased by about two minutes. The results of this study show that track athletes who listen to music with slightly increasing tempos can decrease their running times.

A repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant increase in time to exhaustion for males and females during the music condition. A Tukey's post hoc test revealed that the males endured longer than females during both conditions. A second ANOVA showed significantly lower 3 min RPE values for males as compared to females, but no difference between the music and no music conditions. A Tukey's post hoc test revealed that lower 3 min RPE values for males occurred in both conditions. Final RPE means did not differ between condition or gender. We concluded that listening to music while exercising prolongs a subject's time to exhaustion. While subjects rated their final RPE similarly with or without music, they cycled twice as long during the music condition and achieved their final RPE at a later time.
