Book excerpt: Ohio soybean farmers are very concerned about disease and insect pressure during the midseason that may impact yield. The impact of mid-season management for foliar diseases and insect feeding on grain yield was studied in a series of field experiments. The first objective was to evaluate the effect of mid-season foliar fungicide and insecticide application on soybean yield, applied alone or in combination. A trial was established at 12 on-farm field site-years in Ohio during 2015 and 2016 in a randomized complete block design with four replications per treatment. Fungicide and insecticide treatments included: 1) nontreated control, 2) fungicide alone, 3) insecticide alone, 4) fungicide plus insecticide (tank-mixed), 5) fungicide and insecticide (separate tank), 6) fungicide plus crop oil, 7) insecticide plus crop oil, 8) fungicide, insecticide plus crop oil (tank-mixed). All treatments were applied at R3 growth stage (initial pod development), and data on the percent leaf area affected by foliar diseases and insect defoliation was collected. There was no significant yield response associated with insecticide application due to low insect pressure and low insect defoliation levels at the time of insecticide application at all 12 site-years. The economic impact caused by Septoria brown spot has not been documented in this State, but the disease has been developing earlier in the season. In contrast, during 2006 frogeye leaf spot caused on average 35% yield loss across 500,000 acres in Ohio. While frogeye leaf spot, caused by Cercospora sojina Hara, is common in the southern U.S., no documented losses have occurred previously in Ohio. In the last three years there has been a strong pressure by industry to increase fungicide applications for a perceived "plant health" benefit. Therefore, the objectives of this study were i) to determine the yield losses associated with S. glycines on soybean, and ii) to determine the cause(s) of the increase in prevalence of C. sojina in Ohio. The yield loss associated with S. glycines was determined with two approaches: weekly applications of chlorothalonil and timed applications of pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, and flutriafol. Both of these approaches allowed for different levels of Septoria brown spot to develop. The ability of C. sojina to overwinter and the prevalence of seed transmission were both evaluated to determine what was the source of primary inoculum. In addition, a collection of C. sojina isolates from Ohio was compared to isolates from the southern U.S. to determine if there was a shift in temperature growth curves which would have favor infections of C. sojina during the growing season in the northern U.S. This same isolate collection was also used to determine if the Rcs3 gene was effective against Ohio's C. sojina population. From this three-year study it was concluded that brown spot in Ohio does contribute to reductions in yield, albeit at 196 to 293 kg/ha. Strobilurin fungicides alone or in combination with a triazole, reduced the severity of brown spot, but did not maintain the yield potential of plants grown under conditions of water stress. However, this family of fungicides may increase soybean yields under certain conditions. In addition, it is important to consider the net return in order to determine if producers have a real benefit or only an extra expense. The use of a highly susceptible cultivar widely planted during 2006, and warmer winter temperatures were both the cause of the increase in prevalence of C. sojina during the previous two years in Ohio. If winter indices continue to increase, then these conditions will enhance survival of this and other plant pathogens that did not previously overwinter at these latitudes.

Azoxystrobin at 0.11 kg ai/ha and azoxystrobin at 0.11 kg ai/ha + 0.035 kg ai/ha diflubenzuron were the most profitable treatments and increased net returns $23/ha and $31/ha, respectively compared to the nontreated control.

Merr] grain commodity price has increased by almost 300% generating interest in agricultural inputs to maximize soybean yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of common inputs on soybean grain yield in enhanced (high-input) and traditional (low-input) production systems. The inputs evaluated included: Rhizobia inoculant, gypsum, pyraclostrobin fungicide, lambda-cyhalothrin insecticide, and manganese (Mn) foliar fertilizer. A sixteen site-year trial was established in Ohio during 2013 and 2014. Rhizobia inoculant was seed applied before planting, gypsum was applied at the VC growth stage (unrolled unifoliate leaves), and fungicide, insecticide, and Mn foliar fertilizer were applied at the R3 growth stage (initial pod development). Measurements of percent leaf area affected by foliar disease and insect defoliation and Mn and sulfur (S) concentration in leaves were collected at six site-years. The omission of pyraclostrobin from the enhanced production system significantly reduced yield in five of sixteen site-years by 0.21 to 0.79 Mg ha-1, but its addition to a traditional system increased yield significantly at only one of sixteen site-years by 0.47 Mg ha-1 Soybean yield was influenced by fungicide application when fields had disease present, above average yield (>3.5 Mg ha-1), and received >25 cm of precipitation in June and July. During 2013 and 2014, with established corn/soybean rotations, no S or Mn deficiencies, and minimal insect pressure, there were limited effects of inoculant, gypsum, insecticide, and Mn foliar fertilizer on grain yield. The data indicate a very small potential for high-input production systems to enhance crop yield without the presence of diseases, insects, or nutrient deficiencies. Knowledge of potential yield limiting factors is useful in identifying inputs that will increase soybean yield on a field by field basis.

The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of coarse droplets generated by drift-reduction nozzles on foliar fungicide efficacy and residual in soybean infected by frogeye leaf spot caused by Cercospora sojina. No differences in disease control, soybean yield, spray retention, and residual when applying Quadris Top SB, a premix of azoxystrobin and difenoconazole, using nozzles that produce either a medium or ultra coarse droplet spectrum were determined. Due to the challenge of timing fungicide applications targeting frogeye leaf spot infections, growers often make applications preventatively, prior to visual infection. Therefore, the second objective was to determine the EC50 of C. sojina isolates collected from trial locations to further investigate the residual control window of azoxystrobin. The effective concentration in which 50% of mycelial growth of resistant isolates tested were inhibited was determined to be 7.44638 [mu]g mL−1 , while the concentration for sensitive isolates was found to be 0.04789 [mu]g mL−1 . The third objective was to determine the effect of droplet size on plant coverage and canopy penetration when making fungicide applications in a commercial setting with increased potential for off-target movement. These studies showed no differences between nozzles producing either medium or ultra coarse droplet spectra when considering frogeye leaf spot control or soybean yield with an application of Quadris Top SB. Coverage analyses determined that applications made with ground self-propelled sprayers deposited 43% more solution in the upper canopy than the lower canopy, but was not effected by droplet spectra. These results indicate that DRT nozzle technology will not have a negative impact on frogeye leaf spot disease control or soybean yield when applying Quadris Top SB. Further studies should be conducted to determine the impact of DRT on other diseases of soybean or alternate crops.

Improvements in the types and modes of action of active ingredients applied along with small annual fluctuations resulted in a slight downward trend in pesticide use to 516 million pounds in 2008. These changes were driven by economic factors that determined crop and input prices and were influenced by pest pressures, environmental and weather conditions, crop acreages, agricultural practices (including adoption of genetically engineered crops), access to land-grant extension personnel and crop consultants, the cost-effectiveness of pesticides and other practices in protecting crop yields and quality, technological innovations in pest management systems/practices, and environmental and health regulations. Emerging pest management policy issues include the development of glyphosate-resistant weed populations associated with the large increase in glyphosate use since the late 1990s, the development of Bt-resistant western corn rootworm in some areas, and the arrival of invasive or exotic pest species, such as soybean aphid and soybean rust, which can influence pesticide use patterns and the development of Integrated Pest Management programs.
