Book excerpt: Teen relationship violence (TRV) is defined as sexual, physical, and psychological actions that are used to harm or control a partner in an intimate relationship. TRV is prevalent in today's youth, with about one in three adolescents reporting either being a victim or a perpetrator of dating violence in at least one relationship in their lifetime and about 13% reporting being a victim or a perpetrator of TRV in two or more relationships. Adolescents who are involved in a pattern of abusive behavior in one or more dating relationships are defined as being involved in continuous dating violence. The purpose of this study was to test a model that predicts continuous dating violence and its mediators using longitudinal data. Harmful family dynamics, including parental conflict, authoritarian parenting, and sibling bullying, have been identified as a risk factor for TRV. Social learning theory states that a child who witnesses or experiences harmful family dynamics may learn maladaptive relationship behaviors (in dating relationships in particular). Anxious attachment has been shown to mediate the role between childhood emotional abuse and adolescent dating relationships. Adolescents with anxious attachment may be hypersensitive to cues that signal abandonment or rejection in intimate relationships and respond with feelings of terror, grief, or anger. Also, depression has been found to be a consequence of harmful family dynamics. Depression has also been linked to TRV. By testing a model that predicts continuous dating violence as opposed to isolated instances of abuse, we can begin to distinguish risk factors that contribute to a pattern of violent intimate relationships. The current study was part of a larger longitudinal study that collected data from students at local middle and high schools. The larger study consisted of two data collections that were conducted approximately nine months apart during the regular school year. After selecting for perpetration or victimization at wave 1, the sample for the current study included 209 students (96 males and 106 females). Structural equation modeling was used to assess the model that predicted continuous dating violence by testing the hypothesis that anxious attachment and depression each mediate the relationship between harmful family dynamics and continuous dating violence in teens. Twelve structural equation models (four overall models and eight models separated for gender) were assessed, and there was mixed and partial support for the hypotheses tested. There was no support for the mediating effect of anxious attachment on the relationship between harmful family dynamics and continuous dating violence. However, there was partial support for the mediated role of depression on the relationship between harmful family dynamics and continuous dating violence victimization, but this model did not fit the data well. The three overall models revealed a strong direct path between harmful family dynamics and continuous dating violence, which suggests that while the study's hypothesized variables did not mediate the relationship, there may be other potential mediators to examine in future research.

A third common theme of the papers is an expansion of research efforts to groups other than victims of family violence and abuse, as there are chapters that examine the individual and social characteristics of male perpetrators of both wife abuse and child abuse as well as chapters that focus on the attitudes and behaviors of professional groups concerned with the treatment of victims of family violence and abuse. The volume shows great methodological diversity and attention to theoretical detail; the research presented reveals the possibility of a more comprehensive social science approach to the study of family violence and abuse. In work related to theory building, one chapter explains a number of findings in the child abuse and neglect literature using propositions derived from evolutionary biology; another paper distills propositions from several theoretical traditions. In conjunction with these efforts, several chapters report research designed to test competing propositions. Chapter references and research data are provided.

This volume describes and analyzes the various perspectives of family members concerning life, and particularly old age, in the shadow of long-term intimate violence. It explores how people make sense out of living and aging in violence, how interpersonal, familial and cross-generational relationships are perceived and reconstructed and how “we-ness” is achieved, if at all, in such families.
