Book excerpt: Abstract: The current research investigation was designed to examine the effect of aerobic exercise training on cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Subjects (N = 8) completed 8 weeks of aerobic style exercise 3 times a week at an intensity of 60 to 85% maximum heart rate. Each subject was assessed for endothelial function, peak oxygen consumption, glucose tolerance, body composition, and serum lipids. Subjects were tested prior to and 48 to 72 hours following the completion of the exercise intervention. Endothelial function improved 60% in subjects (p> .05) following the exercise intervention independent of improvements in glucose tolerance, oxygen consumption, lipids, and body mass index. Possible reasons for the lack of differences may include small subject number and the nature of the disease pathology. In conclusion, exercise training has been found to have positive but not significant effects on endothelial function, metabolic state and body composition in adolescents with T2DM.
