Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of every linear polymer are affected by liquid and gaseous nitrogen, Argon, and oxygen if the temperature is less than about 70 degrees above the boiling point. The tensile strength decreases and the creep rate increases with respect to an increase in the surface concentration of the gas. The surface concentration is related to the pressure and temperature by the parameter peQ/RT where Q was about equal to the heat of vaporization of the gas. The usual effect of the gas was to produce crazes. About 12 gases were tested and the only two gases that had no effect were helium and hydrogen because they have low heats of vaporization. The range of the experiments were from 78K to the glass transition temperature. The mechanical behavior was also found to depend on the size and shape of the specimen as measured by area per unit volume because crazes usually nucleate at the surface. It was found that the macroscopic mechanical behavior could be quantitatively derived from the measurable microscopic parameters of the crazes. The pressure range of 0-1 atmospheres was investigated. Book excerpt: As environmental performance becomes increasingly important, the development of man-made polymers and their associated benefits has been overshadowed by problems relating to their ultimate disposal. In the light of wider acceptance of polymers for use in high technology applications, Polymers and the Environment aims to redress the balance. The book reviews the properties and industrial applications of polymers and discusses their environmental benefits compared with traditional materials. It also addresses the issues of polymer durability, recycling processes to aid waste minimization and biodegradable polymers. This text is intended to introduce the non-specialist reader to the benefits and limitations of polymeric materials from an environmental viewpoint, and will prove a useful book for both students and professionals.

The reason for such activity is due to the finite nature of traditional petrochemical derived compounds in addition to economic and environmental considerations. Thus a key goal of the coming years will be the development of sustainable raw materials for the chemical industry that will replace current fossil-based feedstocks. The challenge for researchers is to develop natural and manmade synthetics that would reduce the emission of gases. This book gives a thorough overview of the manufacture and uses of low environmental impact polymers. This book will provide information for the experienced user of polymers wanting to use biodegradable materials and also be useful to designers, specifiers, end users and waste managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Effect of Radiation on Properties of Polymers examines the effects of radiation on plastics and elastomers. Polymers are required in products or parts for a range of cutting-edge applications that are exposed to radiation, in areas such as space, medicine, and radiation processing. This book focuses on the effects of radiation exposure within that environment, providing in-depth data coverage organized by category of polymer. Aspects such as radiation impact on mechanical and thermal properties, including glass transition and heat deflection temperatures, are described, demonstrating how changes in these properties affect the performance of plastic or elastomer parts. The effect of radiation on electrical properties is also included. Supporting introductory chapters explain the key concepts of radiation, including the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of plastics and elastomers. This is a vital resource for plastics engineers, product designers, and R&D professionals, working on products or parts for radioactive environments, as well as engineers and scientists in the medical, nuclear, and radiation processing industries. The book also supports researchers and scientists in plastics engineering, polymer processing and properties, polymer and coatings chemistry, materials science, and radiation. - Brings together highly valuable data on the effect of radiation on the properties of polymers and elastomers - Enables the reader to compare properties and to select the best possible materials for specific applications - Supported by detailed explanations and analysis, ensuring that the reader understands how to interpret and utilize the data

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers constitute a separate area on the environmental issues. Due to the generation of excessive amounts of polymers wastes by industries and householders, the world has confronted a serious crisis. Furthermore, due to the rising environmental awareness, economical and petroleum concerns an increasing attempt is being made to cope with the polymers wastes during the last few years. The traditional methods used to dispose polymer wastes such as combustion of polymers wastes or burying underground show a negative influence on the environment. From the existing studies, it seems that the recycling process is one of the best techniques to treat the waste polymer products. Recycling of polymers through advanced techniques is an important topic that is driven by both the commercial and environmental influences. Several new techniques have been developed along with the means of reusing recycled polymers. Some of the commercially important technological processes for recycling of waste polymers include mechanical recycling, chemical or feedstock recycling and energy recovery. Keeping in mind the advantages of the recycled polymers, this book gives an overview of on properties and processing of different kinds of recycled polymers along with their composites for a range of applications. This book is unique in the sense that it deals exclusively with the properties and processing of different recycled polymers which are otherwise considered as waste. The book is the outcome of untiring efforts of the researchers from different parts of the world with extensive research experience in the field of recycled polymers across different disciplines. Some of the main features are:- Present state-of-the-art recycled polymers from different resources - Includes contributions from world renowned experts on recycled polymers - Discusses the properties and durability of recycled polymers based materials - Highlights new frontiers in the properties and applications of recycled polymers - Focus on recyclability and up-to date progress on recycled polymers - Effect of different parameters on properties of recycled polymers are presented - Solutions for widespread application are recommended - Current problems, recent developments and applications are discussed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of environmental factors can influence the performance of advanced polymers and composites. In particular, exposure to a combination of moisture and elevated temperature can significantly alter properties. The extent of chemical and physical changes is a function of exposure time and the temperature and humidity of the environment. This work discusses the effects of chemical and physical aging of AFR700B, a high-temperature addition polyimide resin. Neat resin samples were isothermally aged for 500 and 1000 hours at 250 deg C in dry air, humid air, and dry nitrogen. Changes in the dynamic mechanical properties and weight of the resin samples after these different exposures are discussed. An accelerated aging process was developed to facilitate the study of hydrolytic degradation. The effect of degradation on the Tg, weight, and mechanical behavior is discussed. The use of a silicon-nitride moisture barrier proved ineffective.

Book excerpt: This volume represents a continuation of the Polymer Science and Technology series edited by Dr. D. M. Brewis and Professor D. Briggs. The theme of the series is the production of a number of stand alone volumes on various areas of polymer science and technology. Each volume contains short articles by a variety of expert contributors outlining a particular topic and these articles are extensively cross referenced. References to related topics included in the volume are indicated by bold text in the articles, the bold text being the title of the relevant article. At the end of each article there is a list of bibliographic references where interested readers can obtain further detailed information on the subject of the article. This volume was produced at the invitation of Derek Brewis who asked me to edit a text which concentrated on the mechanical properties of polymers. There are already many excellent books on the mechanical properties of polymers, and a somewhat lesser number of volumes dealing with methods of carrying out mechanical tests on polymers. Some of these books are listed in Appendix 1. In this volume I have attempted to cover basic mechanical properties and test methods as well as the theory of polymer mechanical deformation and hope that the reader will find the approach useful.
