While this is promising, a notable amount of students do not attain a degree. This scenario can create major consequences for the United States as global competiveness requires a workforce that possesses a postsecondary degree. Dual enrollment is a program that has been seen to answer the need for more postsecondary graduates. Despite the robust literature that suggests the positive effects for students who participate in dual enrollment, limited research exists on the effects of dual enrollment on the institution. Therefore, this study attempted to fill the gap in the literature by examining the effects of dual enrollment on an institution. The independent variable was participation in dual enrollment and the dependent variables were persistence rates and degree completion. The population consisted of 5,251 first-time, full-time students in the Mississippi Community College System. Of this number, 741 had taken at least 1 dual enrollment course between the fall of 2010 and the spring of 2015, and 4,510 had no previous dual enrollment experience at all. A Chi-square test was used for both research questions. Results of the study indicate that there is a significant difference in persistence rates when comparing dual enrolled students to non-dual enrolled students. First-time, full-time students who had previous dual enrollment experience were more likely to maintain consistent enrollment (69%) at the community college than students who had no previous dual enrollment experience (45%). There is also a significant relationship between students attaining a degree in a timely manner when comparing dual enrolled students to non-dual enrolled students. First-time, full-time students who had previous dual enrollment experience were more likely to earn a degree in 3 years (61%) than students who did not participate in dual enrollment (35%). The effect size for both research questions was small. While the outcomes of this study are positive, it is imperative to continue to examine the effects of dual enrollment on an institution. Policy differences at each of the Mississippi community colleges could render different outcomes for the students and ultimately affect the institution.

Book excerpt: A growing trend in high schools across the state is the use of dual credit and dual enrollment courses to better prepare high school students for college or the work force. Given the increase in dual credit and dual enrollment participation and the goal of creating a more seamless transition from high school to college, the effectiveness of these programs needs to be researched. The research hypothesis for this study states that students who participate in a dual credit and dual enrollment program during high school are more likely to complete an associate degree within 3 years than students who do not participate in dual credit and dual enrollment, when accounting for covariates such as gender, race, and socioeconomic status. This study examined the effectiveness of dual credit and dual enrollment programs, particularly with regard to associate degree completion, credit hour accumulation, and college GPA. The participants in this study were 1st-time, full-time students enrolled during Academic Year 2007 at 5 of the 15 community and junior colleges in state of Mississippi. The sample included 6,029 students, of which 255 had previously participated in a dual enrollment or dual credit program. This study revealed that dual credit and dual enrollment participation positively affects postsecondary outcomes for students enrolling in community colleges in the areas of associate degree completion and college GPA. Students who started college with prior experience in a dual credit or dual enrollment program were 2.51 times more likely to complete an associate degree within 3 years of first-time, full-time college enrollment than individuals who did not participate. Additionally, the study revealed that factors such as SES, gender, and race had an effect on college GPA; and that SES and race affected the number of credit hours earned by community college students. Given the positive outcomes resulting from participation in dual credit and dual enrollment programs, these programs certainly bear consideration for expansion and further study in the future, particularly given the growing availability of longitudinal data within statewide longitudinal data systems that have launched in recent years across the United States.

This means dual enrollment can greatly benefit students in rural areas, which report lower college-going and postsecondary attainment rates than other locales. However, rural areas face unique challenges in providing high-quality dual enrollment programs: (1) Securing qualified instructors, either high school teachers who have the qualifications to lead college-level courses or postsecondary instructors; (2) Covering program costs, as many rural districts face declines in enrollment and the funding that follows students in many states; and (3) Addressing program logistics, including the challenges of offering a course to a small number of students and offering career/technical education coursework when high schools may not have the latest technical equipment but the nearest community college is a long drive away. This report will discuss how states are rising to these challenges, including these examples: (1) A public-private partnership in Ohio includes funding to help eight colleges and universities create and administer an 18-month master's degree with a teacher-friendly schedule; (2) Texas authorizes workforce investment funds to support dual enrollment programs targeted to address the needs of high-demand fields; and (3) Ten states authorize a course to be offered at a location other than a high school or college, easing travel burdens. This includes Illinois and Wyoming. A final section will address the opportunities posed by delivering dual enrollment through tribal colleges. State policies are often silent on the inclusion of tribal colleges in dual enrollment programs. However, one state, New Mexico, created a tribal college dual credit program fund to address this issue.

These dual credit programs may help reduce the cost of college and the time it takes to complete a college degree. In the state of Washington, the enactment of ESSHB 1546 solidified dual credit programs as a legitimate piece of the state's education system. Policymakers advocate for dual credit programs as a means of introducing historically non-dominant populations to college (Taylor, 2015; Tobolowsky, 2016). For many post-secondary institutions, especially community colleges, this is enough reason to establish and offer dual credit programs. From a student success perspective, there are few demographic comparisons on who is utilizing these programs. From an institutional success perspective, there is limited information about whether students are using these programs as a stepping-stone to a 4-year university without completing a degree at the community college. This study is a quantitative evaluation of the impacts of dual credit programs on Washington community colleges and its students. The purpose is to assess relationships that may exist between dual credit programs and community college completion rates. The findings suggest that overall, dual credit programs have positive outcomes for both students and institutions. However, outcomes are not equitable among different demographics. These findings may lead to the consideration of additional or revised questions and further research, which may examine if anything were missing from current legislation.

Book excerpt: This study examined archival institutional data of former dual enrollment students and their direct entry peers who were first-time college students at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC). The sample of 764 students graduated from local service area high schools in spring 2008 and matriculated to SBCC in fall 2008. The study compared measures of achievement and indicators of persistence for all students over three academic years, ending spring 2011, and used measures of statistical significance to determine if differences existed based on prior dual enrollment status and location of dual enrollment experience. Measurements of persistence included enrollment full-time versus part-time and college transferable unit accumulation. Achievement leading to persistence was determined by placement into college-level coursework, grade point average at two points in time, and completion of college transferable units. Differences between former dual enrollment students and their direct entry peers were statistically significant. Former dual enrollment students were more likely to enroll full-time, required less basic skills remediation, achieved higher average GPAs, and accumulated more transferable college units. Further statistical analysis compared student records by three locations of dual enrollment experience: high school campus, college campus, or a combination of both the high school and college campuses. Data analyses indicated that former dual enrollment students who took courses on their high school campus and the college campus enrolled full-time at a higher rate, earned a higher average GPA at both points of measurement, placed into college-level math and English courses at a higher rate, and achieved more transferable college units than any other subgroup.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine academic and social experiences of students who participated in a two-year intensive dual enrollment program housed on a community college campus. The academic experiences were examined through an analysis of community college and university data for 275 dually enrolled students and a comparison group of 258 traditional community college transfer students. An independent test of means was used to compare dual enrollment students to traditional community college transfer students. The findings were significant and found that dually enrolled students had higher community college GPAs, higher associate's and bachelor's degree completion rates, and shorter time periods to associate's degree completion. The social experiences were examined through the use of a survey from 93 students who participated in the intensive dual enrollment program. Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the students' experiences while participating in the dual enrollment program compared to their regular high school and compared to the university. The analysis revealed that the dually enrolled students had significantly higher ratings of overall satisfaction with the dual enrollment program and better quality ratings for relationships with students, faculty, and administration while participating in the dual enrollment program, compared to their experiences while at the high school and university. Qualitative analysis of open-ended survey questions revealed that the dually enrolled students typically missed their friends and extracurricular activities of their regular high school, but many positive aspects of the dual enrollment experience made up for "missing out" on a traditional high school experience. Initially, students opted to participate in dual enrollment in order to get a free head start on college. Many survey respondents indicated that the small size of the program was crucial to their success by providing a close-knit family environment. Recommendations are provided for policymakers to support dual enrollment programs and for high school, community college, and university advisors to provide guidance to address the unique concerns of dual enrollment students.

The research was conducted using a questionnaire by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnership (NACEP) that surveyed community college students at a south Mississippi community college to determine their perspectives of dual enrollment and dual credit. All participants were over the age of 18. Only those students who were dually enrolled or took dual credit classes in high school were allowed to participate in this study. The descriptive research study was used to obtain information that describes existing opportunities by asking past dual enrollment and dual credit students about their perspectives, attitudes, and beliefs about college preparedness and dual enrollment and dual credit. This study is constructed to give a detailed analysis of self-reported data by an elite group of individuals (dual enrollment and dual credit participants) at a specific time. The participants were asked a series of questions using a questionnaire to collect data about their dual enrollment and dual credit experience. Students in the study felt that dual credit and dual enrollment and dual credit was good, and they would recommend it to other students. These perceptions were especially true for those students with lower high school GPAs and in families where the mother had less education.

SInce dual enrollment participation is on the increase, it was important to research the long term impact on students. A basic qualitative study was chosen because of its ability to produce opinions and attitudes directly based on research participants' experiences. Much of the current research conducted during the literature review was quantitative in nature and by using a basic qualitative research model, more in-depth and rich information could be collected. In an effort to understand these experiences, research participants were asked to complete a questionnaire addressing their overall attitude toward dual enrollment. In addition, research participants were asked questions regarding their social and academic transitions into the four-year university, specifically since they were starting off at the college with junior level standing. The purpose of this study was to analyze the perceptions and experiences of former dual enrollment students with regard to their transition into the four-year institution. Research participant questionnaires and follow up interviews were used to collect the data. Overall, the participants had a positive attitude toward dual enrollment, but there were some academic and social transition issues related through the data. Additionally, college advising was seen as an important resource in helping with the transition from dual enrollment programming to college as cited in the literature, but participation among the sample with this supportive service was inconsistent. Finally, an unexpected theme emerged related to research participants' desire to save time toward degree completion. The results of the study assisted in identifying recommendations for practice implications and further research.
