Book excerpt: The main objective of this research investigation was the effect of compressive loading on the fatigue response of graphite epoxy laminates as influenced by a circular hole and an aggressive environment. The investigation was undertake n in order to further characterize the behavior of graphite/epoxy laminates under fatigue loading. The primary emphasis of the program was on the accumulation of a statistically significant data base. Unnotched coupon properties of a quasi-isotropic and a 67% 0 degrees fiber laminate were investigated in a 82.2 degrees C (180 degrees F), 90% R.H. environment after prior conditioning in that environment. The interactional effects of absorbed moisture and fatigue loading on the fatigue lifetime of coupons containing a circular hole was investigated at room temperature and at 82.2 degrees C (180 degrees F), 90% R.H. using the quasi-isotropic laminate. The test program consisted of static tension and compression tests; tension-tension and tension-compression fatigue tests; and static tension and compression residual strength tests of coupons prior tested either under tension-tension or tension-compression fatigue loading. Book excerpt: The main objective of this research investigation was the experimental determination of the effect of compressive loading on the fatigue response of graphite/epoxy lamiantes. The primary emphasis of the program was on the accumulation of a statistically significant data base. The data base was to be used for developing an analytical model with predictive capability to account for the effect of compressive loading. The test program included only unnotched coupons in a room temperature, laboratory air environment. The test program consisted of static tensile and compressive tests; tension-tension and tension-compression fatigue tests; and tensile and compressive residual strength tests of coupons tested either under tension-tension or tension-compression fatigue loading. The development of a large, statistically meaningful data base was accomplished. The general effect of compression on the fatigue response of a graphite/epoxy composite was determined. However, a general model with capability to account for compressive loading was not attempted. As an alternate, the concept of a fatigue threshold was postulated along with consideration of some substantiating data. Analysis of the data showed that due to the extent of data scatter, a model of the 'wear-out' or similar type would predict the need for unacceptably low stress levels to achieve the high probabilities of survival required for aircraft structures.

Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of a notched, graphite/epoxy (T300/5208) laminate subjected to predominantly compressive loading was explored in a series of constant amplitude and transport wing spectrum tests. Results of these tests indicated that (1) the amount of local (near the notch) buckling allowed in the tests significantly affected fatigue life; (2) spectrum truncation of either the high- or low-load end of the spectrum produced lives greater than those obtained in the baseline, complete-spectrum test, but life was much more sensitive to truncations at the high-load end; and (3) the Palmgren-Miner linear cumulative damage theory always predicted lives much longer than the actual spectrum loading test lives.

Book excerpt: This report is the fifth in a series of reports on the damage growth of notched and visible impact-damaged AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy quasi-isotropic laminates under long-term mechanical fatigue loading. The effects of load type, load level, load sequence, and spectrum modification are evaluated in this study. X-ray radiography is taken of the test specimens to monitor the fatigue damage, which are in the form of splitting and delamination around the center hole of a specimen. Modifying the compression-dominated loading spectrum by omitting the two lowest load levels has been found to have little effect on the propagation of damage while reducing testing time by 99.7%. Experimental results indicate that growth of split-induced delamination under constant amplitude tension-compression (T-C) fatigue occurs mostly between and along the splits in a narrow band. Under compression-compression (C-C) loading, the mode of damage growth changes from splitting to widthwise extension of delamination and fiber failure. None of the open-hole specimens failed after 10(exp 6) cycles under constant amplitude tension-tension (T-T) loading. However, x-ray radiography showed that the specimens suffered very different damage at different load levels. The residual compressive strength (RCS) is influenced by the type of damage to varying degrees depending on the load levels. In spectrum fatigue loading, residual tensile strength (RTS) were relatively unaffected while RCS was affected significantly. Thus, it is difficult to identify a single damage parameter that could be correlated to changes in strength. However, there is enough data to propose a prediction model for open-hole specimens under constant amplitude loading, which matched well with collected data.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses an experimental program that addressed the effect of low-velocity impact damage on the fatigue behavior of two laminates, fabricated from AS/3501-6 graphite/epoxy unidirectional tapes, with lay-ups representative of high-performance fighter aircraft wing skin lay-ups. Prior to testing, specimens from these laminates were subjected to one of two types of low-velocity impact damage. The first type was created using a blunt-tipped (1.6-cm tip diameter) impactor, and the impact energy was chosen to induce internal damage, approximately 5 cm in diameter, with no visible sign of damage on the outer surfaces. The second type of damage was created using a sharp (tetrahedral-tipped) impactor, with visible signs of damage on the impacted and opposite surfaces. Subsequent to introducing low-velocity impact damage, test specimens were subjected to static and constant amplitude fatigue loading. In the presence of compressive loads, lateral knife-edge supports were placed near the outer edge, for specimen stability, permitting unconstrained delamination growth elsewhere. Static tension and compression tests were conducted initially, and significant strength reductions due to the impact damages were measured. Fatigue load amplitudes were chosen to be fractions, S, of the static strengths. The behavior of impact-damaged specimens was investigated under tension-tension (R ? 0), tension-compression (R = -1), and compression-compression (R -> -?) fatigue loads. During fatigue, the growth in the impact damage was monitored by means of ultrasonic pulse-echo records. Fatigue life data for the various laminate-damage-loading combinations were obtained in the form of S-N curves. Interesting damage growth patterns were observed, and the criticality of each type of impact damage on the fatigue behavior of the tested laminates was assessed.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of the first task of the last two tasks of a three-task program focusing on the study of relationship between damage propagation and residual strength of graphite/epoxy laminates. Specimens of two laminate types, a 32-ply quasi-isotropic and 24-ply 67%-0, containing a centered poorly drilled hole were evaluated in this study. Baseline static tension and compression tests were conducted at high and low strain rates and at elevated temperature.

Book excerpt: Results are reported of fatigue tests on a toughened graphite/epoxy (IM6/5245C) using a specimen and grip design that allows a relatively large volume of material to be tested. The loading was compression dominated (R=-3.75). Two different stacking sequences of an 18 ply laminate were tested. The lamination was typical of an aircraft wing skin (0/45/90) (44.4%,44.4%, l 1. 1 %). The specimens were 25.4mm wide, 290mm long with a gauge length of 150 mm. During the test program specimen stiffness and residual strength were measured. In parallel, local damage development was monitored using ultrasonic C-scans, photoelastic coatings and optical microscopy. The use of thin (.25 mm) photoelastic coatings to observe in-situ damage initiation and growth is new. It is based on the sensitivity of coatings to the change in mechanical properties of specimens due to damage. The C-Scan inspection results correlate closely with photoelastic observations. Results indicate that fatigue in composite specimens is dominated by the edge effect. Differences in the fatigue lives of the two stacking sequences used were close to two orders of magnitude. The proper selection of stacking sequence is crucial to achieving long fatigue lives. Under compression dominated loading fatigue damage is a local process. Damage always initiated at the edge and could be related to edge interlaminar shear stresses. The fatigue process consists of a relatively long period before initiation, usually in several locations, followed by a period of growth from one initiation site that finally leads to rapid compressive failure.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive review of its kind on the long-term behaviour of composite materials and structures subjected to time variable mechanical, thermal, and chemical influences, a subject of critical importance to the design, development, and certification of high performance engineering structures. Specific topics examined include damage, damage characterization, and damage mechanics; fatigue testing and evaluation; fatigue behaviour of short and long fibre reinforced polymer and metal matrix materials; viscoelastic and moisture effects; delamination; statistical considerations; the modeling of cumulative damage development; and life prediction. The volume provides an extensive presentation of data, discussions, and comparisons on the behaviour of the major types of material systems in current use, as well as extensive analysis and modeling (including the first presentation of work not found elsewhere). The book will be of special interest to engineers concerned with reliability, maintainability, safety, certification, and damage tolerance; to materials developers concerned with making materials for long-term service, especially under severe loads and environments, and to lecturers, students, and researchers involved in material system design, performance, solid mechanics, fatigue, durability, and composite materials. The scope of the work extends from entry level material to the frontiers of the subject.
