Book excerpt: "Recent trends in sport have investigated the use of post-exercise treatments to improve performance. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of three post-exercise recovery treatments (cold-water immersion, active rest cycling, and no treatment) on next-day performance (total time (TT) and drop-off (DO) time) of the Modified Reed Repeat Sprint Skate Test (RR) in female ice hockey players. Subjects (n=11) completed three weekly trials consisting of RR1 followed by an intense practice, a treatment, a 22 hour rest, and RR2. Five days separated trials. Each subject completed all treatments in random order. Performance recovery was measured by speed differences within each trial and compared among treatment groups. There was no significant interaction between treatment and performance, and no significant main effect for treatment. There was a significant main effect for performance. The TT in RR2 (M=44.23 sec) was significantly (p

Book excerpt: The Purpose of this study was to determine the most effective method of recovery from an exhausting workout by comparing passive, active, and cold-water immersion (CWI). Exercise induced muscle damage (EIDM) is the micro trauma that occurs during strenuous exercise. Recovery is the physiologic response period following intense exercise where the body repairs EIMD, adapts to exercise, and refuels tissue for performance. There are many physiological and psychological factors involved in recovery. For example, active recovery may be advantageous because it promotes greater blood circulation to the damaged tissue. CWI may be advantageous because it serves to limit inflammation. By manipulating these factors it was hypothesized that CWI would be the most effective method of recovery. The Hanover College Institutional Review Board approved this study.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Cold water immersion (CWI) is commonly used by endurance athletes to speed recovery and maintain performance during subsequent exercise bouts. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of CWI following an acute bout of intense aerobic exercise on 5 km run performance, perceived muscle soreness (PMS) , range of motion (ROM), thigh circumference, and perceived exertion. Nine endurance trained males (35.9 ÷ 7.8 years old) completed 2 trials consisting of 8 repetitions of 1200 m at a running pace equal to 75% ofVO2peak. Following exercise, subjects underwent CWI (12 mm at 12°C) on the lower body or no treatment. A timed 5 km run was completed 24 hr post exercise. No differences were found between 5 km run time for the CWI and control trials. PMS increased significantly from baseline to immediately post exercise (p

Book excerpt: "The high-intensity, physically demanding nature of team-sport exercise invokes physiological perturbations often resulting in short- and long-term reductions in muscle function and increased symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). When such exercise bouts are performed in hot environmental conditions and/or include exposure to intense physical collisions between opposing players, the physiological load of exercise can be exacerbated. Consequently, post-exercise recovery strategies including cold water immersion (CWI) are commonly implemented in order to minimise the deleterious symptoms associated with team-sport exercise, and optimise the quality of subsequent performance. Despite the increased popularity of CWI, minimal research has focused on the benefits following team-sport exercise and more specifically, there remains a paucity of research evaluating the subsequent effects of cold therapy on the recovery of neuromuscular function following the demands associated with team-sport exercise. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to examine the effects of post-exercise cold therapy on the recovery of neuromuscular function following a variety of exercise conditions related to team-sport activity"--Abstract, p. v.

Book excerpt: Post-exercise recovery strategies are commonly used with elite athletes to minimise fatigue experienced post-training. Sleep is widely considered to be the most important period for achieving optimal recovery post-exercise, however, sleep research in athletes is limited. One of the most popular post-exercise recovery techniques is cold water immersion (CWI). While there has been some research into the subsequent performance benefits (~60 min to 72 h) of post-exercise cold water immersion, there has been limited research into the physiological responses in the post-immersion (~90 min) period. As athletes often perform CWI in the evening post-exercise, research is needed to investigate the effects of CWI on subsequent sleep quality and quantity. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effect of evening high-intensity exercise, plus any effect of CWI performed post-exercise, on subsequent sleep quality and quantity. Specifically, study 1 investigated the core temperature and salivary melatonin responses to 15 min of either cold (14°C) or warm water immersion (WWI: 34°C) after a high-intensity cycling protocol in the evening. Study 2 investigated the effect of early evening high-intensity training sessions (over a training phase) on the sleep of elite youth soccer players in their normal sleeping environment using wrist actigraphy, by comparing high-intensity and low-intensity/no training nights. Additionally, as the players regularly engaged in CWI post-training (15 min in 14°C) it was possible to explore any effects of CWI on subsequent sleep. Study 3 combined elements of study 1 and study 2 together, by investigating the effect of evening highintensity cycling with and without the addition of CWI (15 min in 14°C) performed post-exercise compared to a control (no-exercise, no CWI) condition on the sleep of healthy male athletes. Sleep was measured using polysomnography (PSG), the gold standard of sleep measurement. Core temperature, skin temperature and salivary melatonin were also measured as these have all been linked to sleep mechanisms and there has been limited research surrounding their response to evening exercise and CWI. The results from these studies show that performing CWI post-exercise will decrease core temperature at a greater rate than both WWI and a control condition, with the effect lasting for ~2 h post-exercise. In addition, salivary melatonin is unaffected by both high-intensity exercise and CWI, even when controlling for light exposure, which usually inhibits the secretion of melatonin. However, most importantly, high-intensity exercise performed in the evening with or without the addition of CWI performed postexercise does not affect whole night sleep quality and quantity of athletes as measured by both actigraphy and PSG. Therefore, athletes and coaches can be confident that performing CWI post-exercise in the evening does not negatively affect the subsequent sleep of athletes.

Book excerpt: Hockey players traditionally engage in passive recovery between playing shifts and in between periods. The habit of passive recovery between periods, however, is being questioned with emerging evidence that a more "active" recovery may expedite lactate removal and lead to improvements of performance in the subsequent periods of play. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of active and passive recovery on blood lactate concentration and subsequent performance of repeated work bouts in elite hockey players (n-7). Utilizing a randomized crossover design, subjects performed 7 shifts of a hockey specific task before and after 12 minutes of either active (50-60% peak power on cycle ergometer) or passive (complete muscle inactivity) recovery. Blood lactate was significantly lower following active versus passive recovery. While not influencing performance, active recovery reduced blood lactate accumulation in subsequent periods of simulate hockey play compared to passive recovery.

Book excerpt: "In most team sports, a cycle of training, competition, and recovery repeatedly occurs over each week of a competitive season. For athletic performance to be maintained through a season, an optimal balance between training and recovery is required. To facilitate the recovery process after competition games and training, hydrotherapy has been adopted by a number of sporting teams. Methods: In the present thesis a review of literature was undertaken to identify the most commonly investigated methods of recovery in professional sport. Pilot studies were then conducted across periods of four weeks. The review of literature highlighted the need for research into recovery to examine beyond the acute phase. To address the need to examine recovery beyond the acute phase the major study evaluated three related questions: Firstly, the effectiveness of hydrotherapy for recovery in the first 48h after a simulated game: Secondly, the effectiveness of hydrotherapy for recovery across a cyclic week, including a simulated game and three training sessions: Thirdly; the effectiveness of hydrotherapy for recovery as measured across performance in two simulated Rugby Union games. A simulated game of Rugby Union previously used in evaluating factors affecting performance in Rugby Union was adopted as the key physiological stressor: Finally, to accommodate and compare the studies within this thesis with the increasing volume of published literature evaluating hydrotherapy for recovery in team sport, a systematic review with meta-analysis was carried out.Male Rugby Union players (n=24) were recruited to participate in this research. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups. A cold water immersion (CWI) group underwent two cycles of 5 minutes at 10oC, a contrast water therapy (CWT) group underwent 5 cycles (1 minute alternating immersions at 10oC/40oC) and a control group underwent passive recovery, which involved being seated for 15 minutes. Within group and between group analyses were conducted using an ANOVA model with baseline scores as covariates for each of the three research questions. Post hoc analysis was conducted manually, with each time point as the covariate and analysed individually against each time point. Effect sizes were calculated as partial eta2 (ηp2) (omnibus) and Cohen‟s d (univariate)." -- Abstract.
