Book Synopsis Nutrition Support for Athletic Performance by : Mark Russell
Download or read book Nutrition Support for Athletic Performance written by Mark Russell and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athletes and their support personnel are constantly seeking evidence-informed recommendations to enhance athletic performance during competition and to optimize training-induced adaptations. Accordingly, nutritional and supplementation strategies are commonplace when seeking to achieve these aims, with such practices being implemented before, during, or after competition and/or training in a periodized manner. Performance nutrition is becoming increasingly specialized and needs to consider the diversity of athletes and the nature of the competitions. This Special Issue, Nutrition Support for Athletic Performance, describes recent advances in these areas.

Book excerpt: The Boron '97 meeting was a great success in summarising all recent developments in basic and applied research on boron's function, especially in plants. New techniques have since been developed and new insight has been gained into the role of boron in plant and animal metabolism. Nevertheless, there were still lots of open questions. The aim of the present workshop held in Bonn as a satellite meeting to the International Plant Nutrition Colloquium was thus to gather all actual information which has been gained since the Boron '97 meeting and to compile knowledge, both from animal and plant sciences. Furthermore, applied aspects had to be addressed too, as there is an increasing awareness of boron deficiencies even in crops such as wheat, which have formerly not been considered as responsive to boron application. Genetic differences in boron demand and efficiency within one species are a further important topic which has gained importance since the 1997 meeting. More in-depth knowledge on the mechanisms of boron efficiency are required as an increased efficiency will be one major possibility to maintain and improve crop yields for resource-poor farmers. Nevertheless, it has also clearly been shown that an adequate supply of boron is needed to obtain high yields of crops with a high quality, and that a sustainable agriculture has to provide an adequate boron supply to compensate for inevitable losses through leaching (especially in the humid tropics and temperate regions) and for the boron removal by the crop.

Book excerpt: The Female Athlete Triad (Triad), a syndrome of low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and low bone mineral density (BMD), affects up to 60% of exercising girls and women. As such, understanding the physiology underlying the Triad is imperative in order to identify therapeutic targets and develop effective treatment strategies to prevent long-term health detriments in afflicted women. Bone health is a major clinical outcome of concern in female athletes and exercising women with the Triad, as bone loss or suboptimal peak bone mass development may predispose women to osteoporosis and related fractures later in life. To garner a better understanding of factors contributing to bone health and to inform guidelines for treatment targets in female athletes and exercising women with the Triad, this purpose of this dissertation was 1) to assess the unique and combined effects of energy status and estrogen status on volumetric BMD (vBMD), bone geometry, and estimated bone strength in exercising women, 2) to assess the unique and combined effects of energy status and estrogen status on bone turnover in exercising women, 3) to evaluate predictors of change in bone turnover dynamics across a 12-month nutritional intervention in women with exercise-associated menstrual disturbances, and 4) to determine if bone turnover dynamics at baseline impact BMD outcomes in women with exercise-associated menstrual disturbances participating in a nutritional intervention. Key findings of the studies that made up this dissertation implicate that energy status is a main driving factor dictating vBMD, bone geometry, estimated bone strength, and bone metabolism in exercising women. The results indicate that improving energetic status will not only improve bone turnover at the cellular level, but that bone turnover favoring bone formation over bone resorption will also predict improved BMD in the following year. The findings support the guidelines put forth by the Female Athlete Triad Coalition that endorse nutritional therapy as the first line of treatment for the Triad, as low energy availability is the root cause of the clinical sequelae, including menstrual dysfunction and compromised bone health.

Book Synopsis The Long-term Effects of Varsity Athletic Participation on Bone Mineral Density by : Ruth Ann Bush
Download or read book The Long-term Effects of Varsity Athletic Participation on Bone Mineral Density written by Ruth Ann Bush and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background. Although weight-bearing exercise among previously sedentary adult females can increase bone mineral density (BMD), cross-sectional studies suggest that high-intensity exercise among amenorrheic athletes may be detrimental to bone health. The long-term effects of athletic participation on BMD should be examined. Objectives. This study was designed to: (1) Determine the prevalence of varsity athletic participation among female university graduates who participated in a mail survey; and, (2) Compare BMDs of high school varsity female athletes with women who were sedentary during the same time period, while controlling for covariates. Methods. A survey was mailed to 7291 alumnae of 2 Southern California universities in the classes of 1987-1991. The survey was returned by 1900 (26.1 %), and 1373 (72.3%) consented to further contact. Of the latter, 73 athletes (70.6% of those eligible) and 67 controls (53.1 % of those eligible), all 30-35 years of age, in a clinic evaluation, provided their health histories, anthropometric measurements, physical activity and dietary assessments, and dual energy x-ray absorptiometer measurements of the hip and spine. Results. Athletes were taller (p
