Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), were introduced to the top of an arena with a divider of various crack widths. Termites were not able to pass through cracks [less than or equal to]610 microns, and feed on the bottom of the arena. The minimum crack width permitting termites to pass was 711 microns for workers and larvae or 813 microns for soldiers. The percentage of termites passing through a crack increased as crack width increased from 711 to 5000 microns. For 5000 micron cracks that did not restrict access to the bottom filter paper about 74% of the termites passed through and consumed ~40 mg filter paper. As crack size decreased to 711 microns only 35% of termites passed through, however, consumption of filter paper on the bottom (~38 mg) did not significantly decrease. This suggests that any crack [less than or equal to]711 microns would not limit termite damage in a structure. Head capsule dimensions (length, width, and depth) were measured for termites passing through various crack widths. As crack width increased, the maximum head capsule dimension of termites that passed through the crack also increased linearly. Depth of head capsule was best correlated with crack width that allowed termites to pass through it. Termites often use plumbing penetrations of concrete slabs to enter a structure.

Book excerpt: Termite sociality is commonly assumed to be similar to ants when in fact, termites inhabit a wide array of niche. Variation in the life history of termites is most evident in nest types, and termites display adaptive behaviors most appropriate to the ecological challenges associated with their nesting habit. Termite nest types are categorized into one-piece, the drywood and dampwood termites colonizing a single wooden piece, intermediates, the subterranean termites colonizing multiple resources via underground tunnels, and separate, the higher termites that include the builders of elaborate mounds. Foraging behaviors of termites, which occurs in the phases of discovery, quality assessment, and recruitment, and are impacted by different nest habits of termites. Various mechanisms of resource quality assessment have been observed in one-piece termites, as a colony consumes a single resource colonized by the founding reproductive. In contrast, due to the need to relocate resources to a centralized nest, separate nest types have developed efficient recruitment mechanisms. Intermediate nest type termites construct tunnels to forage and must efficiently discover resources, as well as have mechanisms to distribute nestmates among feeding sites. Numerous cues associated with the foraging behaviors of subterranean termites have been identified, yet how these mechanisms are integrated into a system of effective foraging strategy has not been considered. In particular, several cues suggested to mediate search patterns are likely involved in later stages of settlement at resources instead. Therefore, further investigations are necessary to determine what cues subterranean termites use to initially discover food resources. The first objective was to investigate termite response to distant odors from wood and nestmates and determine whether this behavioral response was due to attraction or arrestment. The response of Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) workers to wood and nestmates was measured using choice olfactometers that either allowed or prohibited departure from the treatments. Significant response to both wood and nestmates in the no-exit olfactometer indicated a direct orientation to cues and therefore attraction. In addition, the response to wood alone indicated mediation by volatile odors.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates modifications to AWPA Standard E18-06 to develop an above-ground field test for subterranean termites native to the eastern United States. AWPA Standard E18-06 was modified in two stages to progressively increase optimum conditions for subterranean termite feeding. Modification II, which incorporated the use of house bricks and feeder strips with a solid ventilated cover, had an increase in termite attack with less variation between tests. This study also investigates the effects of adding antioxidants, both natural and synthetic, and analogues which lack antioxidant properties, to test wood blocks on feeding by Reticulitermes flavipes Kollar using AWPA Standard E1-09. Antioxidants had feeding deterrence and mortality properties to R. flavipes. Conversely, the non-antioxidant analogues, with the exception of the heterocyclic flavanone, had little effect on R. flavipes. It is concluded that R. flavipes instinctively avoids wood which contains high levels of antioxidants, such as heartwood with phenolic extractives.

Book excerpt: The salivary reservoirs are an important structure within the termite and the more information we gather on termite biology and colony dynamics, the better equipped we are to control them. Termite inspectors should not focus strictly on moisture-prone areas, as termites can relocate water to dry areas. This research also emphasizes the importance of educating homeowners on moisture reduction around homes. Furthermore, salivary reservoirs may be a candidate to target using RNA interference (RNAi)-based termiticides.
