Book excerpt: As the oldest statewide program serving autistic people in the United States, North Carolina's Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren) has had a major impact on ser vices for these people and their families. As we move into our second decade, we are frequently questioned about all aspects of our procedures, techniques, and program. Of all the questions that are asked, however, the one that comes up most frequently and seems to set our program apart from others concerns the ways in which we work with families. To help answer this question we identified what we have found to be the major components in our parent-professional relationships, and we elaborate on these with the most current research informa tion, clinical insights, and community knowledge available through the expertise of our distinguished contributors. Our purpose was to collect the most recent information and to organize the resulting volume along the outlines of the par ent-professional relationship found most important in the TEACCH program. Thus, the four main sections of the book include these four major ways profes sionals work with parents: as their advocates, their trainers, their trainees, and their reciprocal emotional support source. To the extent this effort was success ful, we acknowledge that it is easier to organize book chapters along these dimensions than it is to provide their implementation in the field.

Book excerpt: As the prevalence of children diagnosed with autism continues to rise, the need for high quality parent coaching practices to ensure generalization of skills targeting in early intervention services is pronounced This mixed methods study investigated the results of implementation of a parent coaching treatment package developed in alignment with adult learning and education theory, seeking to increase quality of life for families affected by autism. Results suggest that this intervention may be an effective and socially valid intervention for parents of children who engage in high rates of challenging behavior at home, and has the ability to increase parent implementation of target behavior skills taught in intervention. Parents identified intervention as having high acceptability and identified parent coaching treatment package as a highly effective intervention. Individual results discussed, as well as implications of this intervention as a whole.

From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

However, there is limited literature pertaining to the transition process of families of transitional age individuals with ASD. The transition process for young adults with ASD after high school can be a challenging one, as they are determining their place in the larger community. As such, families of young adults with ASD take on the responsibility of assisting their child during this process. However, there is limited information regarding this process to support families during this significant transition. As such, a group program manual aimed to assist families of young adults with ASD during this transition period was created. The manual provides the structure for a parent education group that covers topics pertaining to the transition process for young adults with ASD. The following dissertation provides a review of the literature of ASD and a presentation of the parent education program manual.

Book excerpt: The present study defined the stressors that the participants, who are parents of children who have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), experience in their day to day life, identified the participants' descriptions of their quality of life (QoL), defined main areas where resources are lacking, and examined the recommendations that the participants had for other parents of children who have been diagnosed with an ASD and social workers working with ASD families. The present study's findings provide that the participants identified themes that define their major stressors as their children's school system, lacking resources in the community and among their own family, financial implications of their child's diagnosis, parents' reactions to their diagnosed child's behavior, impact of having a child diagnosed with an ASD on family dynamics and worrying over their diagnosed child's future. The need of the participants that emerged in the present study were the need for the following: available resources, reconstruction of their child's education system, and financial assistance. The present study found that the participants' recommendations for other parents and social workers working with ASD families were that service providers need better ASD knowledge and that easy access to available resources must be created.
