Lieutenant-general Gordon, the author's father-in-law, had the direction of the siege: and the method by which he carried. on his attack deserves, on account of its singularity and success, the attention of those who study the art of war. He contrived a rampart of earth along the whole front of their approaches. By the continual labour of 30,000 men, this was thrown nearer and nearer to the town, and moved gradually forward; while behind it the troops were screened from the enemy's fire. At the end of five weeks it was advanced to the walls of the town, over which it hung like a mountain; and the garrison, in order to escape being buried...
