Book excerpt: Two of the greatest evolutionary events in the history of life on Earth occurred during Early Paleozoic time. The first was the Cambrian explosion of skeletonized marine animals about 540 million years ago. The second was the "Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event," which is the focus of this book. During the 46-million-year Ordovician Period (489–443 m.y.), a bewildering array of adaptive radiations of "Paleozoic- and Modern-type" biotas appeared in marine habitats, the first animals (arthropods) walked on land, and the first non-vascular bryophyte-like plants (based on their cryptospore record) colonized terrestrial areas with damp environments. This book represents a compilation by a large team of Ordovician specialists from around the world, who have enthusiastically cooperated to produce this first globally orientated, internationally sponsored IGCP (International Geological Correlation Program) project on Ordovician biotas. The major part is an assembly of genus- and species-level diversity data for the many Ordovician fossil groups. The book also presents an evaluation of how each group diversified through Ordovician time, with assessments of patterns of change and rates of origination and extinction. As such, it will become the standard work and data source for biotic studies on the Ordovician Period.

Book excerpt: Selected papers from the August 1988 symposium on the Ordovician System. Authors from the U.K., Canada, Australia, and the U.S. contributed papers on a project to redefine regional chronostratigraphic subdivisions. Papers also cover Ordovician paleontology and biostratigraphy, emphasizing conodonts, graptolites and trilobites. The interrelationships of stratigraphy, eustasy, tectonics, and volcanisms are explored, with particular attention to the Appalachian Orogen. The final section of the volume documents some of the new data and interpretations of Ordovician paleo-oceanography, paleoclimatology, and paleogeography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the IAS Reprint Series reviews some of themajor contributions that have been made over the last twenty yearsto our understanding of deep water environments. Few groups ofrocks have received as much attention in recent years as deep seasands and yet retained so many unsolved problems - How far and howfast can sediment debris flows travel? Do the many ancient seriesthat have been interpreted as submarine fan deposits bear anyresemblance to present day deep sea flows? How valid are thesequences described as coarsening upward or fining upward, and howshould they be interpreted? This timely review of contributionsmade to this area of study since 1970 reflects the heightenedinterest that has surrounded it. Deep Water Turbidite Systems contains 22 papers(reproduced in full) and 22 abstracts of papers that have appearedin the journal Sedimentology, concerned with the broadspectrum of topics within the field of turbidites and associateddeep water systems. Book excerpt: To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the Carolina Geological Society invited forty-three authors to contribute to the creation of The Geology of the Carolinas. The only comprehensive, modern treatment of the subject, the volume has been prepared for a diverse readership ranging from undergraduate students to specialists in the fields of geology and related earth sciences. Following the editors' general introduction are chapters on Precambrian and Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Appalachian Blue Ridge and Piedmont; rocks of early Mesozoic rift basins, formed just before the opening of the Atlantic Ocean; Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary deposits of the Atlantic Coastal Plain; Quaternary geology and geomorphology; Cenozoic tectonism, including evidence for the recurrence of large earthquakes near Charleston; and an overview of mineral resources in the Carolinas. The book includes an index of field guides produced by the society and a thorough bibliography. By introducing exciting new concepts and focusing on challenging problems on the frontiers of research, this authoritative book will stimulate research in the years to come. The Editors: J. Wright Horton, Jr., is a research geologist for the United States Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. Victor A. Zullo is a professor of geology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
