This work is a classic statement of the role of subjectivism, radical uncertainty and change through real time in Austrian economics specifically, and in modern economics more generally. The new book contains the full text and Introductions of the earlier edition as well as the comprehensive previously-unpublished essay "What is Austrian Economics?" and a new Introduction. The essay is a comprehensive overview of the central themes of the book from a somewhat different perspective than in the book itself. It supplements the analysis in the book. The new Introduction explains that the 2007-8 financial crisis and recent developments in behavioural economics have made the book more relevant than ever before. Austrian Economic Re-examined develops and systematizes the fundamental principles of the Austrian tradition to the analysis of rational expectations, business cycles, monetary theory competition and monopoly, and capital theory. Book Synopsis Democracy and Political Ignorance by : Ilya Somin
Download or read book Democracy and Political Ignorance written by Ilya Somin and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the biggest problems with modern democracy is that most of the public is usually ignorant of politics and government. Often, many people understand that their votes are unlikely to change the outcome of an election and don't see the point in learning much about politics. This may be rational, but it creates a nation of people with little political knowledge and little ability to objectively evaluate what they do know. In Democracy and Political Ignorance, Ilya Somin mines the depths of ignorance in America and reveals the extent to which it is a major problem for democracy. Somin weighs various options for solving this problem, arguing that political ignorance is best mitigated and its effects lessened by decentralizing and limiting government. Somin provocatively argues that people make better decisions when they choose what to purchase in the market or which state or local government to live under, than when they vote at the ballot box, because they have stronger incentives to acquire relevant information and to use it wisely.

Book Synopsis Competition and Entrepreneurship by : Israel M. Kirzner
Download or read book Competition and Entrepreneurship written by Israel M. Kirzner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stressing verbal logic rather than mathematics, Israel M. Kirzner provides at once a thorough critique of contemporary price theory, an essay on the theory of entrepreneurship, and an essay on the theory of competition. Competition and Entrepreneurship offers a new appraisal of quality competition, of selling effort, and of the fundamental weaknesses of contemporary welfare economics. Kirzner's book establishes a theory of the market and the price system which differs from orthodox price theory. He sees orthodox price theory as explaining the configuration of prices and quantities that satisfied the conditions for equilibrium. Mr. Kirzner argues that "it is more useful to look to price theory to help understand how the decisions of individual participants in the market interact to generate the market forces which compel changes in prices, outputs, and methods of production and in the allocation of resources." Although Competition and Entrepreneurship is primarily concerned with the operation of the market economy, Kirzner's insights can be applied to crucial aspects of centrally planned economic systems as well. In the analysis of these processes, Kirzner clearly shows that the rediscovery of the entrepreneur must emerge as a step of major importance.

Book Synopsis Hayek's Political Theory, Epistemology, and Economics by : Jeffrey Friedman
Download or read book Hayek's Political Theory, Epistemology, and Economics written by Jeffrey Friedman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hayek thought that all economic behavior (and by implication other human behavior) is based on fallible interpretations of what information is important and of its implications for the future. This epistemological idea animated not only his heterodox economic thought, but his ideal of the rule of law; his road-to-serfdom thesis; and his critique of the notion of social justice. However, the epistemological idea is a protean one that Hayek did not always handle carefully. This volume presents one of the most sophisticated critical reflections on Hayek ever assembled between two covers. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Review.

The defining features of these four sources are then dissected and closely examined using economic analysts and public choice theory. Each part includes an introduction into the lawmaking process for each source, and goes on to discuss such other issues as the optimal specificity of law in legislation to the theories of legal precedent, and to changes in customary lawmaking."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Franco Modigliani and Keynesian Economics by : Antonella Rancan
Download or read book Franco Modigliani and Keynesian Economics written by Antonella Rancan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book follows the intellectual path of Franco Modigliani, Nobel Prize winner and one of the most influential Keynesian economists of the twentieth century, tracing his development and examining the impact of his research. The book begins with Modigliani’s early work as a young law student in 1930s Italy and traces his development through his emigration to the US, his introduction to Keynes’ General Theory at the New School, and his seminal 1944 article on Keynesian and classical economics. The book also examines Modigliani’s pioneering theory of savings: the life-cycle hypothesis (with Richard Brumberg), and the Modigliani–Miller theorem, a cornerstone of modern theory of finance. The book argues that although Modigliani is placed amongst the most prominent Keynesian economists, his connections with Keynesian theory are of secondary importance until the beginning of the 1960s when he joined MIT. This is the first book to place Modigliani’s thought in its proper historical context, showing how it related to wider economic concerns and examining the social and political implications of his work. It will be of interest to scholars in the history of economic thought, and especially post-war American Keynesian economics.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Austrian Economics by : Peter J. Boettke
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Austrian Economics written by Peter J. Boettke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Austrian School of Economics is an intellectual tradition in economics and political economy dating back to Carl Menger in the late-19th century. Menger stressed the subjective nature of value in the individual decision calculus. Individual choices are indeed made on the margin, but the evaluations of rank ordering of ends sought in the act of choice are subjective to individual chooser. For Menger, the economic calculus was about scarce means being deployed to pursue an individual's highest valued ends. The act of choice is guided by subjective assessments of the individual, and is open ended as the individual is constantly discovering what ends to pursue, and learning the most effective way to use the means available to satisfy those ends. This school of economic thinking spread outside of Austria to the rest of Europe and the United States in the early-20th century and continued to develop and gain followers, establishing itself as a major stream of heterodox economics. The Oxford Handbook of Austrian Economics provides an overview of this school and its theories. The various contributions discussed in this book all reflect a tension between the Austrian School's orthodox argumentative structure (rational choice and invisible hand) and its addressing of a heterodox problem situations (uncertainty, differential knowledge, ceaseless change). The Austrian economists from the founders to today seek to derive the invisible hand theorem from the rational choice postulate via institutional analysis in a persistent and consistent manner. Scholars and students working in the field of History of Economic Thought, those following heterodox approaches, and those both familiar with the Austrian School or looking to learn more will find much to learn in this comprehensive volume.
