This book was released on 1986 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the literature concerning the effects of ground freezing on uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Since there was very little information directly related to hazardous waste materials, previous studies on the beneficial use and impact of freezing on wastewater, sea water, sludges and soils have been included. Freezing of uncontrolled hazardous waste sites may cause frost heaving of buried waste material, allowing chemical wastes to move upward, and chemical transport of ions in freezing and frozen soils. Also, repeated cycles of freeze-thaw may adversely affect the durability of clay liners being used to cover hazardous waste sites. Ground freezing can be used beneficially to 1) dewater and consolidate hazardous waste materials, particularly slurry-type wastes; 2) serve as an alternative to slurry walls, trenches, etc., to separate contaminated areas; and 3) immobilize the contaminants, particularly if time is a critical factor. All hardware needed for artificial ground freezing is available, and in the United States there are at least three commercial firms equipped to do such work. In addition to the versatility of this technique, little or no environmental impact is associated with its use. A hypothetical example using artificial ground freezing is presented to illustrate both the data needed to analyze a situation and the costs involved.

Book excerpt: To control the migration of radioactive and hazardous wastes currently contained underground, barriers made of natural materials and man-made substances are constructed atop, and possibly around, the contaminated area. Barrier Technologies for Environmental Management provides a brief summary of the key issues that arose during the Workshop on Barriers for Long-Term Isolation. Recurring themes from the session include the importance of quality control during installation, followed by periodic inspection, maintenance, and monitoring, and documentation of installation and performance data. The book includes papers by the workshop presenters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook comprises an update of volume 1 of the 1984 USEPA document entitled "Review of in-place treatment techniques for contaminated surface soils." The purpose of this handbook is the same as that of the original document - to provide state-of-the-art information on in situ treatment technologies for contaminated soils. Like the previous document, this handbook is written for the use of a varied audience with divers technical backgrounds.... An in situ treatment technology is defined as one that can be applied to treat the hazardous constituents of a waste or contaminated environmental medium where they are located and is capable of reducing the risk posed by these contaminants to an acceptable level or completely eliminating that risk. In situ treatment implies that the waste materials are treated without being physically removed from the ground.... The 1984 document consisted of two volumes. Only volume 1 is being updated by this handbook. The reader can refer to volume 2, however, for a still current and comprehensive discussion of the fundamental properties of soil/waste systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemically contaminated land has only recently been recognized as an immediate or long-term potential hazard, and published guidance on how to tackle such land has been sparse. Indeed much of the available technical work emphasizes the risks and dangers, rather than indicating safe and economical strategies of reclamation. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the important aspects of land reclamation. Its basic aim is to dispel the myths that have become associated with the subject and to indicate methods and strategies that can be used for safe and economical reclamation. The authors concentrate on the more important facets of reclamation and indicate where advice and information is more or less certain. As in any newly developed field there are still uncertainties and, for this reason, not all the chapters contain equivalent amounts of detail. All the authors have expertise in the field of land reclamation, and differences in emphasis between authors reflect the present state of the subject. Overall, the book emphasizes that contaminated land can be reclaimed safely provided that sufficient attention is paid to detail and that the proposed end use of the land is appropriate and based on a detailed knowledge of the site.
