Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Hawaiian Agricultural Experiment Station, 1930 The chemical division covered a rather wide range of activities, including studies of edible-canna starch and the Macadamia nut, a preliminary coffee-soil survey in Kona, Hawaii, and a study to de termine the most practicable method of rejuvenating a 30-year-old coffee plantation. Attention was also given to a study of soil colloids and to the development of suitable commercial methods of preserving and utilizing the avocado. As a result of the latter study it is hoped to obtain a preserved product that can be shipped. Present quarantine regulations prohibit the shipment of the fruit in the fresh state. The nutrition laboratory of the home economics division was transferred during the year to a substantial new wooden building occupying a floor area of square feet. Colonies of guinea pigs were bred for use in investigations comparing the vitamin content of Hawaii and mainland grown oranges and tomatoes. Colonies of white rats were bred for use in a study of the biological value of the protein of the pigeon pea and the food value of Chinese cabbage.
