It focuses on two main areas of FDI: First, it looks at the competition effect of Foreign Direct Investment FDI to domestic businesses in the host country, Zambia and the second part looks at how residents perceive Foreign Direct Investment FDI in Zambia. In order to understand the competition effect of FDI in Zambia, the research study carried a survey on local business houses to get an understanding of how FDI with respect to foreign businesses has created competition to local businesses to their detriment. In addition, the research study conducted interviews with various people in Zambia to collect data and get their perception on FDI with respect to foreign businesses in Zambia. This research found that people's perceptions over FDI are more negative than positive. This research study also found that Foreign Direct Investment FDI has both positives and negatives externalities in Zambia. Under positive externalities, FDI has helped create employment to local people, facilitated the transfer of technology and innovation as FDI spillovers. However, under negative externalities, this research found that FDI had brought more competition to local businesses in the host country, throwing many out of business. In addition, some businesses found it difficult to compete due to unfairness created by state interventions. Therefore, FDI in Zambia was found to have more negatives than positives externalities.

Antecedent benefits include; increased capital inflow and investment, high labour productivity, high output, employment and high incomes. The foregoing, enhance the host country's economic growth. In Zambia, the mining sector dominates FDI inflows compared to other sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and natural resources, transport and construction. Despite being the highest recipient of FDI in the country, the mining sector contributes less towards job creation and skills development than other sectors with less FDI such as agriculture which employs over 80% of the rural people. Indicatively, Zambia's large number of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of which over 98% of its private sector are rural based involved in agricultural production, wholesale or retail trading, etc., working side by side with large scale enterprises, most of whom, are foreign with large capital investments. However, the MSMEs' sector despite creating majority jobs, is characterised by low productivity and incomes resulting in the majority of the population still trapped in poverty staggering at 60.5%.

The study used available data in Zambia from 1986 - 2018. The study adopted the ARDL model for investigating the short and long time relationship between foreign aid and Gross Domestic Product GDP. The hypothesis of foreign aid having an effect on economic growth was explored and examined. This study sought to archive the following objectives: To establish whether there is a connection between foreign aid and economic growth in Zambia and determine whether foreign aid significantly contributed to Zambia's economic growth in the period under review. For policy implications, this study also analyzed the determinant of economic growth in Zambia over the same period. The results clearly revealed a positive relationship between foreign aid and Zambia's economic growth in a given period that was under investigation. The findings in this study affirm that foreign aid may be important in promoting economic growth. This study also asserts that foreign aid may be effective in improving the quality and lives of people if used effectively. Thus, the outcome of this study recommends that foreign aid be directed towards the promotion of investment because its proper use can promote and boots the country's economic growth. For policy implications, this study also found that independent variables such as Foreign Direct Investment FDI, Population Growth, Government Expenditure and Consumer Price Index as important and determinants of economic growth in Zambia over the same period.
