Book Synopsis Blessed Among Nations by : Eric Rauchway
Download or read book Blessed Among Nations written by Eric Rauchway and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 2007-04-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century globalization made America exceptional. On the back of European money and immigration, America became an empire with considerable skill at conquest but little experience administering other people's, or its own, affairs, which it preferred to leave to the energies of private enterprise. The nation's resulting state institutions and traditions left America immune to the trends of national development and ever after unable to persuade other peoples to follow its example. In this concise, argumentative book, Eric Rauchway traces how, from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, the world allowed the United States to become unique and the consequent dangers we face to this very day.
Book Synopsis The Search for Order, 1877-1920 by : Robert H. Wiebe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the Reconstruction, the spread of science and technology, industrialism, urbanization, immigration, and economic depressions eroded Americans' conventional beliefs in individualism and a divinely ordained social system. In The Search for Order, 1877-1920, Robert H. Wiebe shows how, in subsequent years, during the Progressive Era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, Americans sought the organizing principles around which a new viable social order could be constructed in the modern world. This subtle and sophisticated study combines the virtues of historical narrative, sociological analysis, and social criticism.

Book Synopsis The Fruits of Their Labor by : Cindy Hahamovitch
Download or read book The Fruits of Their Labor written by Cindy Hahamovitch and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1933 Congress granted American laborers the right of collective bargaining, but farmworkers got no New Deal. Cindy Hahamovitch's pathbreaking account of migrant farmworkers along the Atlantic Coast shows how growers enlisted the aid of the state in an unprecedented effort to keep their fields well stocked with labor. This is the story of the farmworkers_Italian immigrants from northeastern tenements, African American laborers from the South, and imported workers from the Caribbean_who came to work in the fields of New Jersey, Georgia, and Florida in the decades after 1870. These farmworkers were not powerless, the author argues, for growers became increasingly open to negotiation as their crops ripened in the fields. But farmers fought back with padrone or labor contracting schemes and 'work-or-fight' forced-labor campaigns. Hahamovitch describes how growers' efforts became more effective as federal officials assumed the role of padroni, supplying farmers with foreign workers on demand. Today's migrants are as desperate as ever, the author concludes, not because poverty is an inevitable feature of modern agricultural work, but because the federal government has intervened on behalf of growers, preventing farmworkers from enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Download or read book The Emergence of Industrial America written by Peter George and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a series of interpretive essays on the most dramatic aspects of American economic growth during the last centuryâthe sweeping technological and organizational changes in manufacturing and agriculture and their profound economic and social consequences. The overall focus is the maturing of the American economy from a classic market economy, based primarily on small units of production and private enterprise, through the growth of industrialism and the structural transformation of the economy, to the modern mixed economy with its complex array of giant corporations and labor unions and greatly expanded government sector. The chapters are organized thematically. A distinctive feature of the book is the use of illustrative case studies in each chapter. Peter George is Dean of Social Sciences and Professor of Economics at McMaster University. He is also an associate member of the Department of History.
