Book excerpt: Annotation Economics no longer forms the backdrop to world events but rather appears to drive foreign policy and represents a more powerful resource than military strength. If globalization is irreversible, then conquering markets is much more important than conquering territory. These are the claims made about economics in world affairs, both by policy analysts and by armchair philosophers. This book examines these claims critically shows how political agendas and speculation have formed many of ourcurrent assumptions about the workings of economics in the world today.

Book excerpt: After the end of World War II, the United States, by far the dominant economic and military power at that time, joined with the surviving capitalist democracies to create an unprecedented institutional framework. By the 1980s many contended that these institutions--the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (now the World Trade Organization), the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund--were threatened by growing economic nationalism in the United States, as demonstrated by increased trade protection and growing budget deficits. In this book, Robert Gilpin argues that American power had been essential for establishing these institutions, and waning American support threatened the basis of postwar cooperation and the great prosperity of the period. For Gilpin, a great power such as the United States is essential to fostering international cooperation. Exploring the relationship between politics and economics first highlighted by Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and other thinkers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Gilpin demonstrated the close ties between politics and economics in international relations, outlining the key role played by the creative use of power in the support of an institutional framework that created a world economy. Gilpin's exposition of the in.uence of politics on the international economy was a model of clarity, making the book the centerpiece of many courses in international political economy. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, when American support for international cooperation is once again in question, Gilpin's warnings about the risks of American unilateralism sound ever clearer.

Book excerpt: An Introduction to International Political Economy Susan Strange, formerly University of Warwick. Professor Strange was well known for her unorthodox and stimulating views on the international political economy. Here she provides the student and scholar with a new model synthesising politics and economics by means of a four-faceted structural analysis of the effects of any kind of political authority (including states) on markets, and, conversely, of market forces on states. This refreshingly new framework of analysis is an ideal introductory text.

Book excerpt: Stefano Guzzini's study offers an understanding of the evolution of the realist tradition within International Relations and International Political Economy. It sees the realist tradition not as a school of thought with a static set of fixed principles, but as a repeatedly failed attempt to turn the rules of European diplomacy into the laws of a US social science. Realism in International Relations and International Political Economy concentrates on the evolution of a leading school of thought, its critiques and its institutional environment. As such it will provide an invaluable basis to anyone studying international relations theory.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - General and Theories of International Politics, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ) (School of Business and Economics), course: Master of International Relations, language: English, abstract: This essay seeks to cover details as to why national powers are the determinant of International relations. I will give an understanding of national power and discuss it in terms of international relations which may have some complication since many aspects have to be considered. This therefore will be elaborated on how power has changed throughout the years and defend my argument as to why national powers are the primary factors in international relations. I will therefore highlight ways on how power can be obtained and managed using different governing systems. Hence compare and contrast previous power systems and democratic power systems. I will then highlight factors that affect national systems in the 21st century and alternative solutions for the highlighted factors hence summarise with a conclusion in what national power may mean to the current generation.
