This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes are recognized as one of the greatest threats to crop production throughout the world. Estimated annual crop losses of $8 billion in the United States and $78 billion worldwide are attributed to plant parasitic nematodes. Plant parasitic nematodes not only cause damage individually but form disease-complexes with other microorganisms thereby increasing crop loss. Nematode diseases of crops are difficult to control because of their insidious nature and lack of specific diagnostic symptoms which closely resemble those caused by other plant pathogens and abiotic diseases. Future developments of sustainable management systems for preventing major economical agricultural losses due to nematodes is focused on strategies that limit production costs, enhance crop yields, and protect the environment. This book presents a first compendium and overview for nematode problems and their management across North America. Each chapter provides essential information on the occurrence and distribution of plant parasitic nematodes, their major crop hosts, impact on crop production and sustainable management strategies for each region of the continent including, Canada, Mexico and all states of the USA. For each region, a thematic overview of changes in crop production affected by plant parasitic nematodes and their management strategies over time will provide invaluable information on the important role of plant parasitic nematodes in sustainable agriculture.

Book Synopsis Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Managed Golf Course Greens Throughout Canada by : Taylor Wallace
Download or read book Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Managed Golf Course Greens Throughout Canada written by Taylor Wallace and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) feed on the roots of plants, reducing the uptake of nutrients and water. Accurate identification and quantification of PPN populations and understanding the population dynamics are key to managing these destructive pests in golf greens. This research was conducted to compare two nematode extraction techniques, identify the genera of PPN present on golf greens throughout Canada, determine conditions that influence PPN populations, and identify effective low-risk nematicides. Five predominant nematode genera were present in Canadian golf greens: Meloidogyne, Heterodera, Tylenchorhynchus, Helicotylenchus and Criconemoides, all of which were more effectively extracted using the sugar centrifugation technique. Golf courses in coastal cities had higher populations than those that were inland and greens established over 20 years ago had more PPN than newer greens. Some of the variation in PPN populations could be explained by soil properties and management techniques. None of the nematicides tested effectively reduced nematode populations.

Book Synopsis The Efficacy of Potential Nematicides for Golf Courses in Florida by : Mengyi Gu
Download or read book The Efficacy of Potential Nematicides for Golf Courses in Florida written by Mengyi Gu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant parasitic nematodes are a hidden problem of golf courses in Florida, being the least understood and most difficult to manage of golf course pests. Belonolaimus longicaudatus, Hoplolaimus galeatus, and Meloidogyne graminis are common nematodes that damage turfgrass. There are several ways to manage nematode problems, such as using cultural methods, resistant/tolerant cultivars, and biological control; however, the most consistent and widely applicable is the use of nematicides. The loss of many nematicides used in previous decades has brought forward the need for new nematode management tools for use on turfgrass. This thesis focuses on the efficacy of some pesticides (EPA labeled and non-labeled for nematodes) to control nematode problems on golf courses. In my research, abamectin, thiophanate-methyl, iprodione, chlorothalonil plus acibenzolar-S-methyl, and azoxystrobin exhibited some degree of efficacy against B. longicaudatus, H. galeatus, or M. graminis, and an experimental plant defense elicitor improved turf health in greenhouse experiments. In a field trial, combinations of abamectin with chlorothalonil plus acibenzolar-S-methyl greatly improved turfgrass health in soil infested with B. longicaudatus and M. graminis.
Book Synopsis Nematode Interactions by : M. Wajid Khan
Download or read book Nematode Interactions written by M. Wajid Khan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nematode interactions are important biological phenomena and of great significance in agriculture. It is a fascinating subject which is multidisciplinary by nature, and concerns any scientist involved with plant health. There have been marked advances in our knowledge of various aspects of the subject in the last two decades. This study area has been the subject of several reviews, but there was no exclusive text on the subject. This has stressed the need to document the information, developing a unifying theme which treated nematode interactions in a holistic manner. This book is about the inter action of plant-parasitic nematodes with other plant pathogens or root symbionts, the nature of their associations, their impact on the host and con sequential interactive effects on the involved organisms. Since nematodes are at the centre of the theme, the responsibility of understanding of other plant pathogens dealt with in this book is largely delegated to the reader. I have limited the book content to interactions with biotic pathogens and root symbionts only, for various reasons. The book embodies 16 chapters, and attempts to present balanced infor mation on various aspects of nematode interactions with other plant pathogens and root symbionts. Some chapters describe general aspects of the subject. Interactions of nematodes with specific groups of organisms are addressed in the remaining chapters.

Book Synopsis Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Plant-Nematode Interactions by : C. Fenoll
Download or read book Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Plant-Nematode Interactions written by C. Fenoll and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992 a Concerted Action Programme (CAP) was initiated by Peter Sijmons with the purpose of intensifying collaborations between 16 European laboratories working on plant-parasitic nematodes. The four-year programme entitled `Resistance mechanisms against plant-parasitic nematodes' focused on molecular aspects of the interaction between sedentary nematodes and plants on the model system Arabidopsis and on novel resistance strategies. Funding was provided mainly for exchange visits between collaborating laboratories and for the organization of annual meetings. During the last annual meeting which was held in May 1996 in Toledo, Spain, Carmen Fenoll initiated the production of this volume. The book presents a series of up-to-date reviews, each written by one of the participating laboratories, which include the scientific progress achieved in the frame of this CAP but are by no means limited in scope to this work.
