Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical Review Year Book for Priests, 1909 This first issue of the ecclesiastical review year book is merely a tentative one. There were difficulties in carrying out, as we had contemplated, the making of a manual that might serve our readers, at all turns, as an indicator and reminder in the fulfilment of the pas toral and priestly functions. The question that puzzled was not so much what to put into the volume, but rather what to omit, lest the volume should become cumbersome and distracting. Perhaps our readers will help us by suggestions how to improve the year book in future. Meantime we trust it will be of service, as it is; and hope that it may meet with the good will of those for whose benefit it has been arranged. Book excerpt: While dissolute bishops and priests around the world grab headlines for their untoward words and deeds, too many other unfruitful priests minister as little more than glad-handing bachelors doing social service work. Top and bottom, is this the Church that Christ intended? Are these the priests we need? “No!” cries author Kevin Wells in these compelling pages that showcase how heroic priests can faithfully tread the narrow path of holy self-sacrifice first blazed by the apostles themselves. From scores of insightful interviews with modern priests, exorcists, seminary formators, and even disillusioned laity, Wells here draws forth a blueprint for priestly holiness that can once again fill our Church with priests abounding with sincere, supernatural faith, on fire with God's love, and moved by the irresistible impulse to save souls, no matter the cost to themselves. Reading this book will deepen your own faith and help you understand what all

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 3: A Monthly Publication for the Clergy; November, 1890 When better times dawned upon the Church here, the difficulties surounding the priest were not entirely removed. The urgent demand for priests was, if anything, greater than before, owing to the ceaseless tide of immigration, largely Catholic; the professors in our seminaries were themselves for the most part missionaries, conversant with the difficul ties of the missionary field, and were not always so well up, it may be, with the strict requirements of the liturgy as could be desired; and the necessity they were under of crowding a long course into a brief space forced them to overlook certain points to which greater attention can be devoted at the present day. If it does not savor of temerity, it may still further be remarked that, when occasionally a missionary was raised to the episcopal dignity, the cruel lessons of circumstances, regretted by none more than by himself, may have followed him, and caused him, in the num ber and variety of his onerous duties, to tolerate certain de partures from the requirements of the liturgy the carrying out of which would have proven, under the circumstances, all but impossible. With these prefatory remarks I shall enter upon the subject indicated by the title of this article. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical Review, Vol. 44: A Monthly Publication for the Clergy; January June, 1911 But all the efficiency of these two forces depends on the seminary. The priest will be what it has made him, or suf fered him to make himself; and the laity will be what he is, - with rare exceptions. AS a general rule, then, it may be reasonably expected that if the seminary turn out spiritual minded, apostolic priests, they, on their part, will make the laity entrusted to them a Chosen generation, a kingly priest hood, a holy nation, a purchased people, who will by their lives proclaim to the world the Virtues of Him who has called them out of darkness into His marvelous light. The self denying lives and labors of such priests will bring back the golden days of the Galilean Ministry; but they must have been raised in Nazareth, and fasted and prayed and passed through the furnace of temptation in the Desert.
