Book excerpt: A book for scholars and businessmen, this examines the history of the EC-US relationship to provide a better understanding of the mutual interests that have pervaded the relationship, before discussing the impact of 1992 and the new institutional frameworks on EC-US trade. The changes stand to affect the USA more than any other trading partner; equally, the US's reaction to a united Europe is of vital importance to the EC member states. Coffey also looks at GATT and changes in Eastern Europe.

Book excerpt: The Convention on the Future of Europe served to galvanize debate about the nature and future developmental trajectory of the European Union. More specifically, it engendered discussion over the degree to which the process resembled that which had occurred in Philadelphia some two hundred years earlier, and, more broadly, over the extent to which the European Union does, or should, resemble the United States. Partly as a consequence of such debates, comparative federalism is now animportant topic, with scholarly work comparing the US and EU proliferating rapidly. The present volume seeks to build on and contribute to this growing literature, by developing a systematic comparison of the institutions, policies and developmental patterns of the European Union and the UnitedStates.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assumes that the world is moving inexorably, if in fits and starts, toward union. The author explores the implications such a unification will have for all global citizens, great and small, and considers some of the ways such a union might be managed for the greatest good.As globalization gains speed and as its benefits and also its costs become more apparent, the author sketches out some of the conditions that could, eventually, make for a better life for all. He draws on the tenets of Representative Democracy using the US Constitution as a guide. Second, he posits that for such a union to succeed, all nations will either be representative democracies or will convert to the use of representative democracy within a reasonable time after joining the world union. As a natural consequence of these developments, the author suggests, any nation choosing not to join the world union will find its isolation unsustainable and will seek to join the union after all. Lastly, the author concludes that a meaningful liberal education is necessary to prepare individuals for their role as politically, economically, and socially informed citizens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential Pelican introduction to the European Union - its history, its politics, and its role today For most of us today, 'Europe' refers to the European Union. At the centre of a seemingly never-ending crisis, the EU remains a black box, closed to public understanding. Is it a state? An empire? Is Europe ruled by Germany or by European bureaucrats? Does a single European economy exist after all these years of economic integration? And should the EU have been awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2012? Critics tell us the EU undermines democracy. Are they right? In this provocative volume, political scientist Chris Bickerton provides an answer to all these key questions and more at a time when understanding what the EU is and what it does is more important than ever before.

Book excerpt: In this thoroughly revised edition of The European Union and the United States, authors Smith, Guay, and Morgenstern-Pomorski delve deep into the complexities of the EU–US relationship amidst pivotal shifts on the global stage. By examining the relationship through the lens of competition, convergence, and crises, this textbook goes beyond narrow focuses on the EU–US relationship, offering a nuanced analysis of changing dynamics. It stands as the definitive and all-encompassing guide to transatlantic relations, considering recent developments in business, trade, political economy, and foreign policy, while carefully navigating the commonalities and differences that exist between the EU and the US. This updated edition also reflects on contemporary changes such as cyber security, climate change, the rise of populism, and the emergence of global powerhouses like China, India, and Brazil, successfully situating the EU–US relationship within a broader international context. Throughout, the authors' diverse academic backgrounds enable an interdisciplinary approach to the material, rebalancing content to include international relations, comparative politics, and management. In doing so, this textbook provides a holistic view of transatlantic affairs. With additional features including focused case studies, summary tables, and speech extracts, this text serves as the ideal companion for higher-level undergraduate students and postgraduate students studying EU politics, or anyone seeking to deepen their knowledge of the broader subject area.
