Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Lee Meares, co-founder and elder, provides a fascinating look at the early years of a ministry that started in a tent and grew to become one of the largest congregations in the Washington Metropolitan region. The church was called the National Evangelistic Center and Evangel Temple before being named Evangel Cathedral (pastored by her son, Bishop Don Meares). Co-founder Bishop John L. Meares was a patriarch of the faith whose zeal for spiritual unity was an instrumental part of racial reconciliation in the Body of Christ, bringing blacks and whites together during a time of segregation. Popular ministers such as Oral Roberts, Jack Coe, Morris Cerullo, Nicky Cruz, John McTernan, T. L. Osborne and G. B. McDowell were guest speakers. During the early years of the ministry, Bishop Meares moved in the miraculous and thousands were healed, saved and set free as the church experienced continuous revival. The ministry received countless letters and testimonies about the move of God. So, Elder Mary wrote and published a monthly Fellowship News which kept thousands of subscribers informed. Elder Mary has painstakingly compiled select articles from that newsletter to preserve the history of this great ministry. This work consists of those clippings as well as testimonies, newspaper articles, news from the worldwide mission field, first-hand accounts, teaching, and encouragement.

Download or read book Twisted Cross written by Doris L. Bergen and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Germany's Christians respond to Nazism? In Twisted Cross, Doris Bergen addresses one important element of this response by focusing on the 600,000 self-described 'German Christians,' who sought to expunge all Jewish elements from the Christian church. In a process that became more daring as Nazi plans for genocide unfolded, this group of Protestant lay people and clergy rejected the Old Testament, ousted people defined as non-Aryans from their congregations, denied the Jewish ancestry of Jesus, and removed Hebrew words like 'Hallelujah' from hymns. Bergen refutes the notion that the German Christians were a marginal group and demonstrates that members occupied key positions within the Protestant church even after their agenda was rejected by the Nazi leadership. Extending her analysis into the postwar period, Bergen shows how the German Christians were relatively easily reincorporated into mainstream church life after 1945. Throughout Twisted Cross, Bergen reveals the important role played by women and by the ideology of spiritual motherhood amid the German Christians' glorification of a 'manly' church.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach by : Robin A Leaver
Download or read book The Routledge Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach written by Robin A Leaver and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ashgate Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach provides an indispensable introduction to the Bach research of the past thirty-fifty years. It is not a lexicon providing information on all the major aspects of Bach's life and work, such as the Oxford Composer Companion: J. S. Bach. Nor is it an entry-level research tool aimed at those making a beginning of such studies. The valuable essays presented here are designed for the next level of Bach research and are aimed at masters and doctoral students, as well as others interested in coming to terms with the current state of Bach research. Each author covers three aspects within their specific subject area; firstly, to describe the results of research over the past thirty-fifty years, concentrating on the most significant and controversial, such as: the debate over Smend's NBA edition of the B minor Mass; Blume's conclusions with regard to Bach's religion in the wake of the 'new' chronology; Rifkin's one-to-a-vocal-part interpretation; the rediscovery of the Berlin Singakademie manuscripts in Kiev; the discovery of hitherto unknown manuscripts and documents and the re-evaluation of previously known sources. Secondly, each author provides a critical analysis of current research being undertaken that is exploring new aspects, reinterpreting earlier assumptions, and/or opening-up new methodologies. For example, Martin W. B. Jarvis has suggested that Anna Magdalena Bach composed the cello suites and contributed to other works of her husband - another controversial hypothesis, whose newly proposed forensic methodology requires investigation. On the other hand, research into Bach's knowledge of the Lutheran chorale tradition is currently underway, which is likely to shed more light on the composer's choices and usage of this tradition. Thirdly, each author identifies areas that are still in need of investigation and research.
