Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous B/w Illustrations & 1 Map Description: This work has been compiled in response to a post-war demand for Indian histories, both local and general, written by Indians. Dr Yazdani, the editor has consulted well known historians, both in Hyderabad and outside, and has chosen from among them scholars, who have already done conspicuous research on the early rulers of the Deccan, to collaborate with him in this work. The work opens with a description of the geography of the area and ends with sections on the fine arts and on the coins and currency system of the Deccan, while the eight central sections cover the early dynasties, each described in their chronological order. Notwithstanding the limited nature of the sources, mainly inscriptions the history has been compiled in all its aspects, political, social, religious, cultural and economic. As it is intended for the serious students and for the general reader, an attempt has been made to present a complete picture of all major events, whilst minor details and scholastic discussions have generally been omitted.

Book Synopsis The Sufis of Bijapur, 1300-1700 by : Richard Maxwell Eaton
Download or read book The Sufis of Bijapur, 1300-1700 written by Richard Maxwell Eaton and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sufis were heirs to a tradition of Islamic mysticism, and they have generally been viewed as standing more or less apart from the social order. Professor Eaton contends to the contrary that the Sufis were an integral part of their society, and that an understanding of their interaction with it is essential to an understanding of the Sufis themselves. In investigating the Sufis of Bijapur in South India, (he author identifies three fundamental questions. What was the relationship, he asks, between the Sufis and Bijapur's 'ulama, the upholders of Islamic orthodoxy? Second, how did the Sufis relate to the Bijapur court? Finally, how did they interact with the non-Muslim population surrounding them, and how did they translate highly developed mystical traditions into terms meaningful to that population? In answering these questions, the author advances our knowledge of an important but little-studied city-state in medieval India. Originally published in 1978. Book Synopsis The Archaeology of an Early Historic Town in Central India by : Monica L. Smith
Download or read book The Archaeology of an Early Historic Town in Central India written by Monica L. Smith and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2001 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case studyoffered in this book is based upon an archaeological examination of the EarlyHistoric town site of Kaundinyapura in central India. In the Early Historicperiod (third century BC to fourth century AD) the Indian subcontinent presentswidespread evidence for long-distance exchange in durable goods at a time whenpolitical entities were relatively short-lived and had few resources to investin the facilitation of exchange. Despite a lack of centrally provided economicinfrastructure, the communities of the subcontinent shared a material culturethat demonstrated communication about style as well as the physical movement ofobjects. Even small towns like Kaundinyapura were participants in thesepatterns of regional exchange, in which households engaged in production anddistribution activities that enabled them to maintain links with the widerregion through the consumption of a shared corpus of material goods.
