Download or read book The Broken Heart of America written by Walter Johnson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing portrait of the racial dynamics that lie inescapably at the heart of our nation, told through the turbulent history of the city of St. Louis. From Lewis and Clark's 1804 expedition to the 2014 uprising in Ferguson, American history has been made in St. Louis. And as Walter Johnson shows in this searing book, the city exemplifies how imperialism, racism, and capitalism have persistently entwined to corrupt the nation's past. St. Louis was a staging post for Indian removal and imperial expansion, and its wealth grew on the backs of its poor black residents, from slavery through redlining and urban renewal. But it was once also America's most radical city, home to anti-capitalist immigrants, the Civil War's first general emancipation, and the nation's first general strike—a legacy of resistance that endures. A blistering history of a city's rise and decline, The Broken Heart of America will forever change how we think about the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food historian Cynthia Clampitt pens the epic story of what happened when Mesoamerican farmers bred a nondescript grass into a staff of life so prolific, so protean, that it represents nothing less than one of humankind's greatest achievements. Blending history with expert reportage, she traces the disparate threads that have woven corn into the fabric of our diet, politics, economy, science, and cuisine. At the same time she explores its future as a source of energy and the foundation of seemingly limitless green technologies. The result is a bourbon-to-biofuels portrait of the astonishing plant that sustains the world.

Book excerpt: The animal wealth of the western "wilderness" provided by talented "savages" encouraged French-Americans from Illinois, Canada and Louisiana to found a cosmopolitan center of international commerce that was a model of multicultural harmony. Historian J. Frederick Fausz offers a fresh interpretation of Saint Louis from 1764 to 1804, explaining how Pierre Lacl de, the early Chouteaus, Saint Ange de Bellerive and the Osage Indians established a "gateway" to an enlightened, alternative frontier of peace and prosperity before Lewis and Clark were even born. Historians, genealogists and general readers will appreciate the well-researched perspectives in this engaging story about a novel French West long ignored in American History.

But a fascinating history waits just beneath the surface in the heart of the city, like the labyrinth of natural limestone caves where Anheuser-Busch got its start. One of the city's Garment District shoe factories was the workplace of a young Tennessee Williams, referenced in his first Broadway play, The Glass Menagerie. Downtown's vibrant African American community was the source and subject of such folk-blues classics as "Frankie and Johnny" and "Stagger Lee," not to mention W.C. Handy's classic "St. Louis Blues." Navigate this hidden heritage of downtown St. Louis with author Maureen Kavanaugh.

Excerpt: ...talented men of the Western States, but failed, as he was opposed by his colleague, Senator Barton, at the most important crisis of his effort, in a most eloquent speech of that distinguished orator and statesman. Strange as it may seem to people of this day, the people of that day believed both their senators acted conscientiously, although so much at variance with each other and yet both as learned. More than forty years have since elapsed, both senators are now dead, the whole subject has been examined and reviewed, and yet the integrity of both remains as brilliant as at that period. The speeches of both Senators are preserved and the subject is still open. An act of Congress had been passed authorizing the selection of a site for a United States Arsenal near St. Louis, and the present site was selected and building and walling commenced this year, but prosecuted with very little energy that season. The location then was one mile south of the south line of the city which was the mouth of Mill Creek, near the Gas Works. There was then but one bridge across Mill Creek on the south line of the city, and but one road leading southwardly from the city to Carondelet, and not a yard of the distance either paved, macadamized or graded. A new era, however, was dawning on St. Louis. The old market house on the north end of Place d'Armes, running parallel with Market street (and the only one in the city), was found to be too small for the accommodation of the people dependent on it. The Mayor and Aldermen therefore passed an ordinance for borrowing money for building a market house on the Place d'Armes, parallel with Main street, on the east side of the block, and appropriated it to that purpose, which, by having a town house above and stores...
