Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous B/w Illustrations & 1 Map Description: Despite the magnitude of the discovery, there has never been a full scale study of the gold artifacts uncovered from a number of sites in India. An attempt has been made to reveal the importance of these archaeological discoveries through proper investigation and research. Besides a general discussion on the types of gold objects found, observations have been made on the techniques of gold ornaments in prehistoric and early historic India. The discoveries of the Indo-Greek, Kushan, Roman, and Gupta gold coins indicate the extensive use of the metal in the early historic period. The literary data suggest an abundance, and a wide diversity of gold and gold objects, which is not even remotely matched by the archaeological data. The present work analyses the relevant literary data and emphasizes virtually all important aspects of the Indian and foreign literary allusions to Indian gold. The geology of gold has been exhaustively presented. A detailed consideration of the geological data throws interesting light on the number of areas and ways in which the metal concerned could be obtained. Thus, the present work is an attempt at integration of data of all kinds on the early history of gold in India. The author has tried to bring out a basic history pattern by a systematic and critical evaluation of the available geological, archaeological and literary data.

Book excerpt: The world was wild for gold. After discovering the Americas, and under pressure to defend their vast dominion, the Habsburgs of Spain promoted gold and silver exploration in the New World with ruthless urgency. But, the great influx of wealth brought home by plundering conquistadors couldn't compensate for the Spanish government's extraordinary military spending, which would eventually bankrupt the country multiple times over and lead to the demise of the great empire. Gold became synonymous with financial dependability, and following the devastating chaos of World War I, the gold standard came to express the order of the free market system. Warfare in pursuit of wealth required borrowing -- a quickly compulsive dependency for many governments. And when people lost confidence in the promissory notes and paper currencies issued during wartime, governments again turned to gold. In this captivating historical study, Kwarteng exposes a pattern of war-waging and financial debt -- bedmates like April and taxes that go back hundreds of years, from the French Revolution to the emergence of modern-day China. His evidence is as rich and colorful as it is sweeping. And it starts and ends with gold.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gold Treasure of India: An Enquiry Into Its Amount, the Causes of Its Accumulation, and the Proper Means of Using It as Money So far as the amount of this sum depends on a remediable over-valuation of gold, it might be reduced by additions to the stock of that metal available for use as money. So far as it depends on the depreciation of silver in the gold valuation, any measure tending to bring into use the discarded silver money of the European world would tend to raise its value. An endeavour is therefore made in the following pages to sketch the history of the precious metals in connection with the trade between India and foreign countries from the earliest ages, to describe the causes always in operation which directed the course of gold and silver to India, to estimate the stock of gold which has been under process of accumulation in India during more than twenty-five centuries, and to urge (not for the first time) on the consideration of those interested in this subject the importance of liberating the vast gold treasure hoarded in India (which the following observations will show to exceed considerably in value), and, by making it available for use as money, to reduce the value of gold as a purchasing agent to its natural proportions.
