Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of Charles James Fox Charles James Fox, our first great statesman of the modern school, was closely connected with scenes which lie far back in English history. His grandfather, if not the most well-graced, was at any rate one of the best-paid, actors on the stage of the seventeenth century. Sir Stephen Fox was born in 1627. "The founder of our family," says the third Lord Holland, "seems, notwithstanding some little venial endeavors of his posterity to conceal it, to have been of a very humble stock;" and Sir Stephen's biographer and panegyrist, writing within a year of his death, has very little to tell which can destroy the effect of this frank confession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles James Fox Under such circumstances I hope it will not be deemed presumptuous in me to attempt to present in a short and condensed form a sketch of the political career of Fox as a statesman, which may serve to recall to men's minds the part which he played at a very important crisis of his country's history. It is obviously impossible to com press within the limits of a work like this a complete history of the times or of the man. Much has necessarily to be left out, and, remembering that in this series I am specially called to deal with my subject as a statesman. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Charles James Fox, Vol. 3 Seven years have elapsed since the appearance of the second volume of the "Life of Fox;" but the interest of the subject has by no means decreased, and while I regret that I have not been able to treat it as it deserves, the importance of the period, from 1793 to 1806, appears to me to be such, that, among the materials for a future historian, a Whig view of Mr. Fox's career during that time ought to find a place. Lord Stanhope has given to the world a very interesting "Life of Pitt," and has placed before us all that can be said in favour of the policy of that statesman, in no unfair or uncandid spirit towards his opponents. Among other materials for history and biography, the following works may be mentioned: - "Memoires tires des Papiers d'un Homme d'Etat," 13 volumes. This work is chiefly by Armand Francois d'Allonville, Count d'Allonville. He was, however, greatly assisted by M. Beauchamp and M. Schubert, who are said to have compiled, jointly or separately, volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10, of the series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Charles James Fox, Vol. 2 Although Lord Shelburne resigned on the 24th of February, it was not till the 2nd of April that the Coalition Ministry was admitted to office. The delay was almost entirely occasioned by the repugnance evinced by the King to submit to the rule of the Whig party. Meeting Lord North's father, Lord Guildford, who was Chamberlain to the Queen, the King said to him: "Did I ever think, my Lord Guildford, that Lord North would have delivered me up in this manner to Mr. Fox?" Lord Guildford replied, that he was sure it was not Lord North's intention to do what was disagreeable to his Majesty, but he understood his Majesty had got over any difficulty on that head by his sanction of the interview between Mr. Fox and Mr. Pitt. It is said that the Lord Advocate advised that Mr. Pitt should be made Prime Minister; and that, on the morning of the 27th of February, Mr. Pitt had consented for a short time to stand on that perilous eminence. If this account was true, bis boldness was but for a moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles James Fox: A Political Study The author of this volume is one of many readers in whom Sir George Trevelyan's Early Life of Cfmrles fame: Fox excited a sentiment which it is perhaps not an exaggeration to describe as a personal affection for the great Whig states man. The fulfilment of Sir George Trevelyan's promise to continue the story of that life is awaited with eager expecta tion. This book is in no sense a biography. It is an attempt to portray the great ideas Fox stood for, to vindi cate the essential consistency of his career, and to appreciate the magnanimous inspirations he gave to politics. If the aim of the book is not kept in mind, its proportions may strike the reader as unjust. No biographer of Fox could dismiss his early political career with the scant notice given it in these pages; in any study of the part he played in those large controversies that have a permanent interest, a pre ponderating importance must be assigned to the history of the struggle with the King, to the moral issues of the French war, and to the details of a momentous chapter in the relations of England and Ireland. These questions call for a minute treatment in a presentation of Fox as the champion, during the frenzied years of panic, of government by public discussion, and as one of the few Whigs who anticipated the great Liberal doctrine of national rights. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials and Correspondence of Charles James Fox, Vol. 2 The present volume contains further materials for Mr. Fox's Life, and in elucidation of the history of his times, till the end of the year 1792. I have with some difficulty altered the order adopted by Lord Holland and Mr. Allen, making it more chronological; and I have added some remarks from time to time upon the great questions which, sixty years ago, divided the opinions of the country. In these papers, as in those contained in the former volume, the frank, sincere, simple, and affectionate nature of Mr. Fox pierces through all the superincumbent clay of a period of low morals, and factious politics. The historical records of the time are very imperfect, and I had no longer the help of Lord Mahon's calm and steady light to aid, if not to direct me. Differing from him, as I often do, it is impossible not to recognise in Lord Mahon an author anxious to ascertain and avow the truth.
