Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fathers of the German Reformed Church in Europe and America, Vol. 1 With sincere gratitude to God, we herewith present to the Church the first volume of the fathers OF the reformed church IN europe and america, the history of whose preparation has extended over four laborious years. The second volume, which at present we hope will complete the work, is nearly ready, and shall, if God will, follow this in the coming autumn. When the work was commenced, we were only deeply impressed with a sense of its necessity, having at the time but little idea of what it ought to be, or would be when finished. Nor did we think of undertaking it our selves, until after we had earnestly, and for a long time, urged it in vain upon several others. At length we be gan it, because we felt it ought to be done, and continued it because our heart grew into it as we advanced. Like Abraham, we went out, not knowing whither we went. Hence, the work is not at all what it was at first, or at any time, designed to be. The life by which it grew gave it plan and shape. It rose first on the top of one of the lower Alps in the upper valley of Einsiedeln, where Zwingli began preaching. Then it descended to light the city of Zurich with the bright ness of the Gospel. Then from city to city and canton to canton it spread its light; - Basle, Schaffhausen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the church today looks quite different than it did two thousand years ago, Christians share the same faith with the church fathers. Although separated by time and culture, we have much to learn from their lives and teaching. This book is an organized and convenient introduction to how to read the church fathers from AD 100 to 500. Michael Haykin surveys the lives and teachings of seven of the Fathers, looking at their role in such issues as baptism, martyrdom, and the relationship between church and state. Ignatius, Cyprian, Basil of Caesarea, and Ambrose and others were foundational in the growth and purity of early Christianity, and their impact continues to shape the church today. Evangelical readers interested in the historical roots of Christianity will find this to be a helpful introductory volume.

John Philip Boehm: Founder of the Reformed Church in Pennsylvania; 1683-1749 The publication of this volume is not the first evidence which the old Mother Synod of the Reformed Church in the United States has given of her interest in the preservation of her history. As early as 1817, the president of Synod, Rev. Wm. Hendel, Sr., proposed that an investigation be made into the origin and growth of Synod, and that a historical statement regarding it be printed. As a result, Synod appointed the presi dent, the clerk, John Henry Hoffmeier and Caspar Wack, Sr., a committee to prepare such a sketch, print it and sell 5000 copies of it (minutes, 1817, p. A member of the commit tee (no doubt the chairman, Mr. Hendel, then remem bered that he had in his possession a copy of Michael Schlat ter's Diary in Dutch, which had been published by the Classis of Amsterdam in 1751. Of this document the committee gave a short summary, covering six and a half pages, which was printed as an appendix to the minutes of 1817 (pp. 14-20) and 3000 separate copies were issued, because, as the committee reported in the following year, there was no evidence of a desire for a larger number.
