A sub-committee was formed to study the subject and, as a first step, requested the CEBS to conduct a series of early fire hazard tests to Australian Standard A30-1958, Section Three, on nominal 4-in. x 1-in. T & G floor timbers. The preliminary testing programme to examine the effects of impregnation of Australian timbers was as given in Table I. Arrangements had been made for impregnation treatments to be done by the Division of Forest Products, CSIRO, using two commercial impregnation formulations which, for the purposes of this record, have been designated as Impregnation treatment A, and Impregnation treatment B. The degree of impregnation followed the trade recommendation of from 2 pcf to 2.5 pcf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable quantitative data on the burning or early fire hazard properties of Australian building timbers are almost non-existent. This report presents the results of tests performed on both treated and untreated Australian building timbers, in accordance with Australian Standard A30 Part 111--1970, Tests for Early Fire Hazard Properties of Materials. The test procedure did not differentiate between untreated timbers with a mean species density of less than about 50 Ib/ft3 but indicated a lowering of early fire hazard properties with increasing species density above that figure. Recommended retentions of two proprietary fire-retardant preservative salts, Pyrolith Plus and Celcure F, gave good protection to two treated softwoods. In the two treated hardwoods tested, these fire-retardants had more effect on the spread of flame and the amount of heat developed than on the ignition index. The presence of a small amount of a boron-based preservative in one of the fire-retardant-treated timbers produced an apparently anomalous result. The impregnation of building timbers with 0.35 Ib/ft3 of copper-chrome-arsenic (CCA) preservative salt had a beneficial effect on the early fire hazard properties of the treated timber. A hazard to health, in fatal terms, was unlikely to arise from a single exposure to the arsenical compounds in the smoke plume from the combustion of such wood. With higher retentions of this type of preservative the tendency of the treated wood to continue to smoulder after removal of the source of ignition could result in a serious weight loss, or even the total destruction of the treated wood . Chemical analyses, supported by burning tests, indicated that removal of more than about 1/4 in. from the treated surface of timber impregnated with commercial loadings of fire-retardant preservative salts could have a detrimental effect on the efficacy of the fire-retardant. A warning is given against unnecessary or excessive planing of treated timber from which the highest resistance to fire is required.Z.

Book Synopsis The Many Lives of Kenneth Myer by : Sue Ebury

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Kenneth Baillieu Myer's father fell dead on the footpath in 1934, Ken's life changed in an instant. As the eldest son of the Jewish immigrant retailing genius, Sidney Baevski Myer, who went from pedlar to philanthropist millionaire in fifteen years, 13-year-old Ken was immediately acknowledged as head of the family. Despite a conventional education at Geelong Grammar and a year at Princeton University, Ken was an unconventional man. He had hit headlines when he was born and continued to make news throughout his life-as the powerful Executive Chairman of Myer; in his refusal to be Governor-General of Australia; with his separation and divorce from his wife Prue and remarriage to a Japanese woman half his age, Yasuko Hiraoka; as Chairman of the Victorian Arts Centre and the National Library of Australia; and during his disastrous years as Chairman of the ABC-a reward for signing the 'Myer It's time' letter, acknowledged by Whitlam as influential in bringing the Labor Party to power in 1972. Ken Myer introduced Australia to the first regional shopping centres, with Chadstone changing the face of the Australian landscape. Parking meters, state of the art information systems at the National Library of Australia, ground-breaking medical research at The Howard Florey Institute and genetic engineering at CSIRO were all facilitated by him. Visionary and romantic, he was depressive and driven, charming one moment, icy the next. Unpretentious and a passionate conservationist, he was generous both publicly and anonymously, giving away his fortune and in doing so founding modern philanthropy in Australia. Happiest when finally free of the Store, he died with his wife Yasuko in a light plane crash in Alaska in 1992. With unprecedented access to family documents, Sue Ebury paints a vivid portrait of the many aspects of Ken Myer's life, and the man himself.
