Two days later, however, a coup put pro-U.S. Lon Nol in power and the two were imprisoned. Book Synopsis In the Godfather Garden by : Richard Linnett
Download or read book In the Godfather Garden written by Richard Linnett and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Godfather Garden is the true story of the life of Richie “the Boot” Boiardo, one of the most powerful and feared men in the New Jersey underworld. The Boot cut his teeth battling the Jewish gang lord Abner Longy Zwillman on the streets of Newark during Prohibition and endured to become one of the East Coast’s top mobsters, his reign lasting six decades. To the press and the police, this secretive Don insisted he was nothing more than a simple man who enjoyed puttering about in his beloved vegetable garden on his Livingston, New Jersey, estate. In reality, the Boot was a confidante and kingmaker of politicians, a friend of such celebrities as Joe DiMaggio and George Raft, an acquaintance of Joseph Valachi—who informed on the Boot in 1963—and a sworn enemy of J. Edgar Hoover. The Boot prospered for more than half a century, remaining an active boss until the day he died at the age of ninety-three. Although he operated in the shadow of bigger Mafia names across the Hudson River (think Charles "Lucky" Luciano and Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, a cofounder of the Mafia killer squad Murder Inc. with Jacob “Gurrah” Shapiro), the Boot was equally as brutal and efficient. In fact, there was a mysterious place in the gloomy woods behind his lovely garden—a furnace where many thought the Boot took certain people who were never seen again. Richard Linnett provides an intimate look inside the Boot’s once-powerful Mafia crew, based on the recollections of a grandson of the Boot himself and complemented by never-before-published family photos. Chronicled here are the Prohibition gang wars in New Jersey as well as the murder of Dutch Schultz, a Mafia conspiracy to assassinate Newark mayor Kenneth Gibson, and the mob connections to several prominent state politicians. Although the Boot never saw the 1972 release of The Godfather, he appreciated the similarities between the character of Vito Corleone and himself, so much so that he hung a sign in his beloved vegetable garden that read “The Godfather Garden.” There’s no doubt he would have relished David Chase’s admission that his muse in creating the HBO series The Sopranos was none other than “Newark’s erstwhile Boiardo crew.”

Download or read book Brothers in Arms written by Andrew Mertha and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Khmer Rouge came to power in Cambodia in 1975, they inherited a war-ravaged and internationally isolated country. Pol Pot’s government espoused the rhetoric of self-reliance, but Democratic Kampuchea was utterly dependent on Chinese foreign aid and technical assistance to survive. Yet in a markedly asymmetrical relationship between a modernizing, nuclear power and a virtually premodern state, China was largely unable to use its power to influence Cambodian politics or policy. In Brothers in Arms, Andrew Mertha traces this surprising lack of influence to variations between the Chinese and Cambodian institutions that administered military aid, technology transfer, and international trade. Today, China’s extensive engagement with the developing world suggests an inexorably rising China in the process of securing a degree of economic and political dominance that was unthinkable even a decade ago. Yet, China’s experience with its first-ever client state suggests that the effectiveness of Chinese foreign aid, and influence that comes with it, is only as good as the institutions that manage the relationship. By focusing on the links between China and Democratic Kampuchea, Mertha peers into the “black box” of Chinese foreign aid to illustrate how domestic institutional fragmentation limits Beijing’s ability to influence the countries that accept its assistance.

Book Synopsis True Crime and Punishment: Mutinies by : Barry Stone
Download or read book True Crime and Punishment: Mutinies written by Barry Stone and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutiny is an act of open revolt by those expected to serve without question, by those working in the most disciplined and demanding of conditions, in the crews of ships, both naval and privately owned. Mutiny on the High Seas examines the circumstances that have driven sailors (and officers) to reject or betray their code, to overthrow authority, to commit extreme and lethal acts of insubordination. Each episode discusses the people who provoked the mutiny (including brutal commanders; poor living conditions; poor pay; untrained and unwilling men; the occasional psychopath), how the mutiny was quelled, the fate of the mutineers, and whether the mutiny achieved any broader institutional, political or social change. The stories range from the mutiny against circumnavigator Ferdinand Magellan in 1520, to the 1797 mutiny of the British Fleet, through to the 1975 Storozhevoy mutiny led by an officer of a Soviet antisubmarine frigate to protest the corruption of the Brezhnev regime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam POWs came home heroes, but twenty years earlier their predecessors returned from Korea to shame and suspicion. In the Korean War American prisoners were used in propaganda twice, first during the conflict, then at home. While in Chinese custody in North Korea, they were pressured to praise their treatment and criticize the war. When they came back, the Department of the Army and cooperative pundits said too many were weaklings who did not resist communist indoctrination or "brainwashing." Ex-prisoners were featured in a publicity campaign scolding the nation to raise tougher sons for the Cold War. This propaganda was based on feverish exaggerations that ignored the convoluted circumstances POWs were put in, which decisions in Washington helped create.

Book Synopsis Working Class History by : Working Class His Working Class History
Download or read book Working Class History written by Working Class His Working Class History and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is not made by kings, politicians, or a few rich individuals--it is made by all of us. From the temples of ancient Egypt to spacecraft orbiting Earth, workers and ordinary people everywhere have walked out, sat down, risen up, and fought back against exploitation, discrimination, colonization, and oppression. Working Class History presents a distinct selection of people's history through hundreds of "on this day in history" anniversaries that are as diverse and international as the working class itself. Women, young people, people of color, workers, migrants, indigenous people, LGBTQ people, disabled people, older people, the unemployed, home workers, and every other part of the working class have organized and taken action that has shaped our world, and improvements in living and working conditions have been won only by years of violent conflict and sacrifice. These everyday acts of resistance and rebellion highlight just some of those who have struggled for a better world and provide lessons and inspiration for those of us fighting in the present. Going day by day, this book paints a picture of how and why the world came to be as it is, how some have tried to change it, and the lengths to which the rich and powerful have gone to maintain and increase their wealth and influence.
