Book excerpt: Well-Being and Higher Education explores the multiple connections of well-being to higher education and why those connections matter—for the individual lives of students and those who teach; for the institution; and for whether or not the unique promise of higher education to a democratic society can be advanced and realized. The publication's thirty-five original essays and provocations—by some of the most highly respected voices within and beyond the academy—address the theoretical underpinnings and practical expressions of these connections. Well-Being and Higher Education opens the discussion on learning's connection to well-being; responds to current challenges against the state of higher education today; and brings to the forefront a conversation considering the greater purposes of higher education and the need to preserve and revive the institution's role to look beyond itself to a greater good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once in a generation, a person of extraordinary psychic powers comes along. Miracles and Other Realities tells the true story of Thomaz Green Morton, a gifted psychic from the Minas Gerais region of Brazil. Originally published in 1990 and now rereleased for a modern audience, Miracles and Other Realities recounts the fascinating story of Thomaz Green Morton and his powerful psychic abilities. This book will turn the heads of scientists, whose traditional acceptance of reality has been limited to that which can be measured objectively, and will introduce to a wider audience the power of mind over matter. Thomaz’s story begins when he is struck by lightning on his twelfth birthday. This electrical insult to his body detonated a dazzling range of paranormal abilities. (Severe electric shock is, incidentally, common to the childhood experience of every major psychic.) Thomaz has since been called the most powerful psychic in the world. Driven by his mind to the farther reaches of reality to produce psychic phenomena such as metal-bending, spiritual healing, and transmutations of matter, Thomaz’s feats are well-documented by the authors. The story is all the more captivating because Thomaz is graced with a childlike emotional temperament, making him intent on living life to its fullest. Coauthors Lee Pulos and Gary Richman explore through Thomaz the ways in which magic, or miracles, challenges the conventional view of reality, thereby shaking up rational belief systems that inhibit the experience of new realms of possibility. Readers will find Thomaz’s story compelling, not only as a real-life example of human potential but as a metaphor for unleashing other realities and levels of consciousness to tap into the potential within themselves.

Book excerpt: Things have escalated in Silverhold Detention Center for the Magically Delinquent. WAY too many people want me dead. Okay, maybe I regret a little. I refuse to accept Venus as Supreme Queen of the witches, but I doubt I have much say in the matter. All the witches in here seem like they are bowing down to her now. Except one. Wren wants vengeance and I can use that. We only need one witch on our side to break out of here. And the breakout is happening. Very soon. Our plans got escalated with that little prison assassination. We all know I'm next. Hauser keeps telling me to ask for Faust's help, but I think it was an omen the alarms went off right when I was about to tell him my secret. I'm coming to care for him though. I'm coming to care for all of them. I can figure that out when Silverhold Detention Center for the Magically Delinquent is far in my taillights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strengths and failures of the American college, and why liberal education still matters As the commercialization of American higher education accelerates, more and more students are coming to college with the narrow aim of obtaining a preprofessional credential. The traditional four-year college experience—an exploratory time for students to discover their passions and test ideas and values with the help of teachers and peers—is in danger of becoming a thing of the past. In College, prominent cultural critic Andrew Delbanco offers a trenchant defense of such an education, and warns that it is becoming a privilege reserved for the relatively rich. In describing what a true college education should be, he demonstrates why making it available to as many young people as possible remains central to America's democratic promise. In a brisk and vivid historical narrative, Delbanco explains how the idea of college arose in the colonial period from the Puritan idea of the gathered church, how it struggled to survive in the nineteenth century in the shadow of the new research universities, and how, in the twentieth century, it slowly opened its doors to women, minorities, and students from low-income families. He describes the unique strengths of America’s colleges in our era of globalization and, while recognizing the growing centrality of science, technology, and vocational subjects in the curriculum, he mounts a vigorous defense of a broadly humanistic education for all. Acknowledging the serious financial, intellectual, and ethical challenges that all colleges face today, Delbanco considers what is at stake in the urgent effort to protect these venerable institutions for future generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constrained by shrinking budgets, can colleges do more to improve the quality of education? And can students get more out of college without paying higher tuition? Daniel Chambliss and Christopher Takacs conclude that limited resources need not diminish the undergraduate experience. How College Works reveals the decisive role that personal relationships play in determining a student's success, and puts forward a set of small, inexpensive interventions that yield substantial improvements in educational outcomes. At a liberal arts college in New York, the authors followed nearly one hundred students over eight years. The curricular and technological innovations beloved by administrators mattered much less than did professors and peers, especially early on. At every turning point in undergraduate lives, it was the people, not the programs, that proved critical. Great teachers were more important than the topics studied, and just two or three good friendships made a significant difference academically as well as socially. For most students, college works best when it provides the daily motivation to learn, not just access to information. Improving higher education means focusing on the quality of relationships with mentors and classmates, for when students form the right bonds, they make the most of their education.

Book excerpt: We've rid Oz of two outsider murderers. Glinda is next. First, the Oz just had to go vote in some yahoo who crashed here in a flying balloon. He turned Oz against the Sentinels and everyone started calling us witches. There were always four Sentinels protecting Oz-North, South, East, and West. I swear, everyone where that Wizard comes from must be an utter sociopath because the next person who ended up in Oz dropped a house on my aunt and murdered my mother. She stole my aunt's silver slippers right off her corpse like some savage. Glinda has established herself as the Good Witch of the South and abandoned her duties as a Sentinel. She wants to rule Oz instead of balancing the Four Points. Instead of learning from our ancestors, Glinda wants everyone to learn magic and compete for the honor of being one of the four Sentinels at Emerald City Academy. I'm competing against Munchkins, Winkies, Quadlings, and that psychopathic farm girl has been invited because she's Glinda's golden girl. The Gillikins in the North seem to be suspiciously left out of the school, which is odd because when good and Wicked Witch assignments were being given out, Locasta was crowned Good Witch of the North. I honestly don't know if Dorothy is dense or just evil. She's got a Munchkin fan club and they are picking on my cousin Saffron because they think her mother was the Wicked Witch of the East. I can't do anything about it because I have to figure out what this school is really about. I've got my Winkie friend Oprix, and Idris, the Prince of the Flying Monkeys here with us. No one knows the Flying Monkeys can now shift into men. The Quadling Headmaster, Daxar, seems to be on my side. Someone started this. Someone broke Oz. It's up to me, the daughter of the alleged Wicked Witch of the West to fix it. If I have to murder Dorothy Gale and Glinda the Good, so be it. I'm fixing Oz and restoring the Sentinels. No one at this school is taking my birthright.

Book excerpt: Ever read those Florida man stories? Hello, I'm Allie. I'm on a bad drug trip in Wonderland, Florida. It started with a getaway to get over my ex. Some guy with a really creepy smile gives me drugs in an alley behind a bar when I'm just trying to get back to my playing card themed motel. Next thing I know, there's a guy wearing a rabbit's head and leather pants pacing outside my motel room ranting about how he's late. I follow him down an alleyway and fall headfirst into some room I'm sure to get hepatitis in. All I know is this place is called the Underground. Nothing is safe to eat or drink. Mice shift into men. That's not normal tea at this crazy tea party I just crashed. Someone help. I'm deep underground in Wonderland, Florida. The weird guy obsessed with hats says there's an evil Druid queen with a pet demon called a Jabberwock terrorizing the Underground. They tricked me down here to start a revolution. The Queen of Hearts is a sick, twisted bitch. Everyone at that tea party might be totally mad, but so am I because I've agreed to stay and help bring her down. Potheads is a reverse harem twisted version of Alice in Wonderland. It's part of the Fairy Tales That Bite Back Series but can be read as a standalone. It has original illustrations by Nancy Afroditae.

Book excerpt: Scorchwood Supernatural Penitentiary is Hell. Literally, it's in Hell. Of all the things to end up in jail for, embezzling wasn't what I thought would bring me down. I've got a pretty healthy arson and murder hobby on my down time. White collar crimes never go to Scorchwood. I should have been given a fee and probation at most. Something is going on. My cell mate, Skoll is an Alpha wolf in for manslaughter. He wants me to meet Roman, a vampire and Amduscias, demon who is really shifty about what his demonic form is. Something fishy is going down in Scorchwood with the elementals. Skoll's last five cellmates were elementals who were framed for white collar crimes. Amduscias is cellmates with one of the worst elemental women in the entire jail and she is not pleased I've made friends with him. Something is going on. Someone is framing elementals and sending them to Scorchwood. But they made a mistake framing me. They didn't know about my little hobbies before they sent me here. They didn't know about Fergus, my fire dragon. There's so much I don't know about why I'm here, but there's so much they don't know about me too. I've made friends in Scorchwood and I don't call myself Elemental Batman in secret for nothing. This should be fun.
