Book excerpt: I don’t know what I expected at this point. You’d think the sorcerers’ council would be singing my praises after everything I’ve done for them, but no! All I get is the hairy eyeball and a third-rate job tracking down spawning demidemons in the north. Our journey quickly leads us to a murder, a mysterious “white giant,” and our favorite mercenary couple... who’ve learned about a demonic infiltrator high in the ranks of Gyria. Wait—isn’t that the city demons burned down a couple books back (with maybe a tiny bit of my help)? Just how much demon-related trouble can one place get up to?!
Book Synopsis Hardy's Poetic Vision in The Dynasts by : Susan Dean
Download or read book Hardy's Poetic Vision in The Dynasts written by Susan Dean and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Dean uses Hardy's own metaphor—the diorama of a dream—to interpret The Dynasts, his largest and last major composition. She shows that the poem presents a model of the human mind. In that mind is enacted an event (the war with Napoleon) and, simultaneously, the watching of that event. The author provides a reading of the poem in visual-dramatic terms, using the diorama stage as the vehicle for the poet's field of vision. She then defines various visual dimensions, the relationships between them, and the various ways in which they can be seen and understood. Her interpretation draws on Hardy's autobiography and critical essays. Originally published in 1977. Book Synopsis Anglo-Saxon England: Volume 12 by : Peter Clemoes
Download or read book Anglo-Saxon England: Volume 12 written by Peter Clemoes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-04-17 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four very different kinds of Anglo-Saxon thinking are clarified in this volume: traditions, learned and oral, about the settlement of the country, study of foreign-language grammar, interest in exotic jewels as reflections of the glory of God, and a mainly rational attitude to medicine. Publication of no less than three discoveries augments our corpus of manuscript evidence. The nature of Old English poetry is illuminated, and a useful summary of the editorial treatment of textual problems in Beowulf is provided. A re-examination of the accounts of the settlement in Bede's Historia Ecclesiastica and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle yields insights into the processes of Anglo-Saxon learned historiography and oral tradition. A thorough-going analysis of an under-studied major work, Bald's Leechbook, demonstrates that the compiler, perhaps in King Alfred's reign, translated selections from a wide range of Latin texts in composing a well-organized treatise directed against the diseases prevalent in his time. The usual comprehensive bibliography of the previous year's publications in all branches of Anglo-Saxon studies rounds off the book.

Book Synopsis Thomas Hardy and Empire by : Jane L. Bownas
Download or read book Thomas Hardy and Empire written by Jane L. Bownas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many of his contemporaries, Thomas Hardy is not generally recognized as an imperial writer, even though he wrote during a period of major expansion of the British Empire and in spite of the many allusions to the Roman Empire and Napoleonic Wars in his writing. Jane L. Bownas examines the context of these references, proposing that Hardy was a writer who not only posed a challenge to the whole of established society, but one whose writings bring into question the very notion of empire. Bownas argues that Hardy takes up ideas of the primitive and civilized that were central to Western thought in the nineteenth century, contesting this opposition and highlighting the effect outsiders have on so-called 'primitive' communities. In her discussion of the oppressions of imperialism, she analyzes the debate surrounding the use of gender as an articulated category, together with race and class, and shows how, in exposing the power structures operating within Britain, Hardy produces a critique of all forms of ideological oppression.

Book Synopsis Tropes, Parables, and Performatives by : J. Hillis Miller
Download or read book Tropes, Parables, and Performatives written by J. Hillis Miller and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1991-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropes, Parables, Performatives collects J. Hillis Miller’s essays on seven major twentieth-century authors: Lawrence, Kafka, Stevens, Williams, Woolf, Hardy, and Conrad. For all their evident differences, these essays from early to late explore a single intuition about literature, which may be framed by three words: “trope,” “parable,” and “performative.” Throughout these essays Miller is fascinated with the tropological dimension of literary language, with the way figures of speech turn aside the telling of a story or the presentation of a literary theme. The exploration of this turning leads to the recognition that all works of literature are parabolic, “thrown beside” their real meaning. They tell one story but call forth something else. Miller further agrees that all parables are fundamentally performative. They do not merely name something or give knowledge, but rather use words to make something happen, to get the reader from here to there. Each essay here attempts to formulate what, in a given case, the reader perfomatively enters by way of parabolic trope.
