Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the physical side of colloidal science from the individual forces acting between particles smaller than a micrometer that are suspended in a liquid, through the resulting equilibrium and dynamic properties. A variety of internal forces both attractive and repulsive act in conjunction with Brownian motion and the balance between them all decides the phase behaviour. On top of this various external fields, such as gravity or electromagnetic fields, diffusion and non-Newtonian rheology produce complex effects, each of which is of important scientific and technological interest. The authors aim to impart a sound, quantitative understanding based on fundamental theory and experiments with well-characterised model systems. This broad grasp of the fundamentals lends insight and helps to develop the intuitive sense needed to isolate essential features of the technological problems and design critical experiments. The main prerequisites for understanding the book are basic fluid mechanics, statistical mechanics and electromagnetism, though self contained reviews of each subject are provided at appropriate points. Some facility with differential equations is also necessary. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter, making the work suitable as a textbook for graduate courses in chemical engineering or applied mathematics. It will also be useful as a reference for individuals in academia or industry undertaking research in colloid science.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on lectures given at the NATO-Advanced Study Institute on Structure and Dynamics of Polymer and Colloid Systems held in Les Houches, France from September 14-24, 1999. The meeting arose from a perceived need to bring together scientists studying the polymer and colloid fields. Although these fields are intertwined and share many techniques (e. g. , light, neutron and x-ray scattering), it is remarkable how little the approaches and concepts used by the one field penetrate the other. For instance, the theory of spherical colloids is very highly developed and many of the concepts developed for these systems can be extended to those with non-spherical morphology, such as solutions of rigid rod polymers. In addition, mixtures of polymers and colloids, both in the bulk and at interfaces, are the basis for many industrial products. Methods are now rapidly being developed for understanding the structure and dynamics in polymer/colloid mixtures at the molecular level, but the point of view of the colloid scientist is often rather different from that of the polymer scientist. The NATO-ASI brought together polymer and colloid scientists, including many young researchers, who presented and discussed recent developments in these fields and the possibilities for cross-fertilization This volume contains articles on a wide variety of topics at the research forefront of the polymer and colloid fields by some of the world's foremost experts at a level accessible to graduate students, post-docs and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the few textbooks in the field, this volume deals with several aspects of the dynamics of colloids. A self-contained treatise, it fills the gap between research literature and existing books for graduate students and researchers. For readers with a background in chemistry, the first chapter contains a section on frequently used mathematical techniques, as well as statistical mechanics. Some of the topics covered include: • diffusion of free particles on the basis of the Langevin equation •the separation of time, length and angular scales; • the fundamental Fokker-Planck and Smoluchowski equations derived for interacting particles • friction of spheres and rods, and hydrodynamic interaction of spheres (including three body interactions) • diffusion, sedimentation, critical phenomena and phase separation kinetics • experimental light scattering results. For universities and research departments in industry this textbook makes vital reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase behavior and dynamical properties of repulsive and attractive colloidal systems were studied by optical microscopy. The optical video microscopy technique is used to study directly particle motions by measuring the positions of individual particles. The technique also offers the possibility to check up on different suggested mechanisms of motion by directly following the particle trajectories in real space using colloidal particles as mesoscopic model atoms. The dynamics of concentrated colloidal soft-sphere suspensions at high polydispersity have not yet been studied by video microscopy. Here, the interest results from the possibility to visualize physical processes as glass transitions, cage effects or cluster formations. A model colloidal system was chosen in order to mimic previous works of nearly hard spheres reported with light scattering. The colloidal model system was chosen to consist of a binary mixture of Teflon core-polystyrene shell and polystyrene microgel particles in a good organic solvent to which a certain amount of linear polystyrene was added. The colloidal model system is particularly considered more complex than the system studied in previous works due to the core-shell nature of the monitored particles, the softness and the polydispersity. It is demonstrated that concentrated glassy solutions melt upon addition of small amounts of linear polystyrene, as manifested by speeding up the diffusion of the particles. As the amount of linear polystyrene increases, the particles start to aggregate to stable clusters. Dynamical arrest is generated via cluster formation and a reentrant glass transition is found. This reentry region is much larger than predicted by theory and reported for another colloidal system with depletion attractions. These discrepancies have been related, especially to the core-shell nature of particles, softness and polydispersity.

Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at a meeting sponsored by the Colloid and Interface Science Group of the Faraday Division, Royal Society of Chemistry, which was held at Wills Hall, University of Bristol from the 14th - 16th April 1997. The pur pose of the meeting, which was entitled Colloidal Dispersions, was to discuss the subject of concentrated colloidal systems including, dispersions, emulsions and powders, in order to emphasize recent advances in experimental and theoretical understanding of these systems and how these advances could be applied to practical utitisation in the wide range of industries which are involved with colloidal systems. The papers presented at the meeting were given by the principal participants in a 5 year project on Colloid Technology, which started on the 1st August 1992, and was funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) of the U.K. and a consortium of industries which was composed of ICI, Schlumberger, Unilever and Zeneca. The academic centres involved were, the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Imperial College, London. Each of the papers published in this volume formed the focus for a discussion on that topic so that each subject was discussed in so me depth by the participants. J ean Proctor and Meg Staff have been tremendously helpful as secretaries at Bristol and Cambridge respectively throughout the project. Also, their help with the various meetings and with the production of this volume was invaluable. We thank them most warmly for their very able assistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dynamics of Aerocolloidal Systems, Volume 1 is concerned with the dynamical behavior of idealized aerosol particles in the light of developments in classical mechanics. The idealization is based on the assumption that the solid or liquid particles suspended in a gas can be modeled as macroscopically smooth, chemically inert, spherical bodies. Topics covered include transport processes, single particles, and generation and behavior of clouds. Emphasis is placed on fluid dynamics from the continuum regime to the free molecule regime. This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of definitions and classifications of aerocolloidal suspensions. The next chapter deals with the characteristics of aerial dispersions as provided for in the hard, smooth sphere picture. The basic mechanical parameters of an aerocolloidal system is described, along with certain different regimes of the idealized aerosol and various solutions of the Boltzmann equation. The reader is methodically introduced to the dynamics of single particles in the continuum approximation; heat and mass transfer to single particles in a continuum; formation of aerosols by nucleation of supersaturated vapor; and diffusion and dispersion of aerosol particles. The final chapter considers the interaction between aerosol particles, paying particular attention to the collision of inert spheres whose sticking probability is unity. This volume will be useful to scholars, practicing scientists, and graduate students as well as those who would consider teaching aerosol mechanics as part of a curriculum in the atmospheric sciences, or in other applied sciences including applied physical chemistry, and engineering.
