There were in New Netherland both Dutch and English settlements; the schools of the former only are included in the study. For a long time after the English took over the colony, the Dutch clung to their language and customs. These disagreements led to three Anglo-Dutch Wars. In the end, the British took control of New Netherland and renamed it New York. But the Dutch influence on the colony and its people continued.
