Maybe it was because Ercole looked no more of a Neapolitan than I did myself, maybe it was because youth is ever blinded to what lies below the surface. I had yet to discover how great a power for evil - evil, calculating, cunning - may lurk beneath the smiling countenance, the flattering hand-grip of an inhabitant of Naples. With the folly of a fool I thought him a popinjay; and Providence, turning folly to the use of wisdom, repaid both him and me in fullest measure. During the whole course of my illness I felt as if chained by a thousand fetters to a hollow wall, which caused me torture. Little by little the wall released me, my sufferings decreased, the fetters loosened and fell apart. During the last two days I was held by a piece of tape, which now also was torn off, and I felt a sense of lightness, such as I had never before experienced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Death But that volume must be subjected to the equal laws of interpretation by which we ascertain the meaning of the words of other authors addressing us from ancient times, and in languages long since dead. Regardless of that tribunal, we are, to all intents and purposes, without a revelation in hu man language; and, still worse, we never can have one. It is absolutely essential to the very idea of a Divine communication in the form of a revela tion, that its words and sentences be understood according to their usual sense at the time in which that communication was made, and amongst the people to whom it was addressed, and to whose care it was committed. Since the apparel of thought changes as the apparel of our persons and words, in the lapse of time vary from their original and primitive meaning, a very strict re gard must always be had to their received accepta tion and sense in the age and country in which they were employed as the vehicle of a Divine revelation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jaws of Death It was a miserable village of a single long street, and low at that, consisting in about equal proportions of a hotel, a dancing saloon, three American bars, a provision store, a shooting-gallery, and a Chinese laun dry. People said, those days, it was better to live in vain than to live in Cooper's Pike City. The inhabitants reckoned about forty men and three women; and so far as I could see they didn't appear to have a single im mortal soul among them./ Hallo! Said I, when I first set eyes on the town of Cooper's Pike; here's a pretty sort of place indeed for me to bring Edith to 1 And that reminds me that I'd better start fair at the very beginning, and tell you who I was, and who was Edith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Life: The Mastery of Death "The Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not." For the past two thousand years at least, the world may be said to have been in a condition of mental and spiritual darkness. This period, or the earlier part of it, is called the Dark Age. The history of this age, distinguished by nothing so much as mans inhumanity to man, is familiar to all, and needs no recapitulation. A few pessimists of the present proclaim that the age of darkness is by no means at an end, and some are wont to predict even a darker age to follow, but the consciousness of the optimistic majority is awakening responsive to the Dawn that is surely breaking over the world, repudiating such pessimistic prognostications as reactionary and retrogressive. We have but to take the mental and moral conditions of two hundred, or even a hundred, years ago and compare them with the conditions of today to become conscious of this wonderful illumination and its many revelations. And what is this New Light that is thus suffusing the earth, working all these wondrous changes, and transforming the world and its ways? It is the same Light that shone in the darkness of the past, but which the shadowed mind of man was unable then to perceive, or to utilize.
