Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duke of Monmouth To the eye of the mountain-bred Scot, the display of fertility, of luxuriance, and of agricultural wealth, which the country soon presented far and near, had rather the character of a region of enchantment, such as he might have found in the gorgeous romances of the preceding century, than that of a soil made prolific by human hus bandry. The numerous sheep-pens in the fields on either side the road, the thick woods that clambered to the very summit of the neighbouring heights, the hep-gar dens, and extensive fields of grain that chequered the face of the surrounding lands; and diversity of scene through which the road conducted them, now Winding up a height overarched with thickest verdure, now lead ing down on a small cluster of farm - houses close nestling in a woody hollow, now offering a wide view of some highly cultivated champaign, now running through a sharp and narrow defile, - all afforded a continual sub ject of admiration to Mr. Fullarton and his children, and of silent satisfaction to his wife, who was herself a native of the country into which they were advancing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Left of a Throne: A Personal Study of James Duke of Monmouth I do not claim for this book that it is in any way a complete biography of "the unfortunate Duke of Monmouth." I have not attempted to deal with his campaigns - he saw much service and was the reverse of a carpet knight as is popularly supposed - I have only touched upon his Rebellion, which has often been minutely described by far abler pens than mine; and I have merely indicated his place in the politics and intrigues of his day. But he has been treated hitherto as nothing better than a pawn in the great game of history, without a personality of his own, and as I have never yet read a study of Monmouth the man, I have written one. I deny none of his follies and sins, but I have gone deeply into the question of his religion, his enduring love, and his fine finish on the scaffold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Taunton Town: A Story of the Rebellion of James Duke of Monmouth in 1685 Now Uncle John was a big man, as big as father him self, with a loud voice and a right jovial manner. I doubt not that he found this jovial address a great source of in come to him; for he kept the inn of the Three Cups in gay Taunton Town, and travellers who paused at his door to ask the way or quaff a cup of mead on horseback seldom rode onwards after having had speech of mine host - unless much pressed for time - but dismounted to taste the good cheer of the house, and more often than not remained until the morrow beneath the friendly shelter of the roof-tree. I was to learn all about this in good sooth, as will shortly be made clear to all. Uncle Robert had followed the example of Uncle John, or had perhaps been guided in his choice by the Old adage of which I have spoken; for he 'too became master of an inn in Bridgewater, by name the Cross Keys. It was not such a ourishing or important house as the Three Cups in Taunton, nevertheless it was a comfortable and well liked place of rest; and the name of Snowe went far in the district as a warranty for good cheer and fair charges. They furnish a death-blow to incipient family records. Such a statement requires elu cidation. Some persons, falling into the opposite extreme to that complained of, - a feeling of shame and degradation at any connection with Mon mouth's Rebellion, -begin to be proud of any ancestor that was with the Duke, and are now beginning to set down, in family Bibles, incidents in the life of their forefathers connected with the campaign, the flight, and even at the execution. Some incorrect and confused accounts have been entered. In the church books of Dissenting Meeting-houses. These entries -might pass some years hence for facts, Whereas they are but stories gleaned from traditional accounts of old persons. Tradition, with respect to Monmouth's Rebellion, has become too much obscured to be relied upon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Progresses, and Rebellion of James, Duke of Monmouth, &C., To His Capture and Execution, Vol. 2 of 2: With a Full Account of the Bloody Assize, and Copious Biographical Notices The King's regular troops were near at hand, and an alarm was created by a party of Lord Oxford's horse. 1 Rainy weather now set in, which was much wanted for the land. There had been excessive drought for two years. The winters having likewise proved severe, there was such a dearth for want of rain, as Evelyn, in his Diary, records, had never happened in his memory. The men had to march in an exceedingly wet day and for some time the weather was inclement. Such is not unfrequently the case in our climate in June and July after a fine April and May, when there is all the appearance, excepting in temperature, of the wintry season. The commissaries served out provisions on the march. In this wet weather the army arrived at Glastonbury, where the ruins of the famed abbey exist, second only to those of Tintern. A description of them becomes unnecessary, from the numbers who have visited that interesting spot. The abbot's kitchen, still uninjured by time, and those parts of the abbey that afforded shelter, were filled with Monmouth's men, as were also the two churches. Large fires were lighted by them. Not illustrated. 1837. Excerpt: ... He has more in his camp of the will to fight than of the weapons without which the will can never strike a blow. But of all the scourges that were ever brandished by the hand of War, they have got one of the most awful, they say, at this instant in the camp of Feversham; one of his colonels--a very fiend incarnate, --a fellow who has spent such a length of time in Africa, that there is not a savage in the deserts but is behind-hand with him in cruelty." "In Africa!"' exclaimed Aquila, turning suddenly pale. "Pray sir, did you hear his name?" "Oh, yes; his name is Kirke." At this word so sudden a coldness seized upon Aquila, that she had like to have fallen to the earth. Her fancy, at all times quick and easily impressed, was darkened at once, as by a cloud of the deepest gloom, at the unexpected occurence of this name, which had not now for a long time past occurred to her memory. For several months after her parting interview with Kirke, his image and the recollection of his vengeful menace had haunted her mind with a degree of constancy and force which made her life unhappy.--. Time, however, and his long-continued absence in a distant part of the island, had at length worn off the gloomy impression from her mind. New prospects, new excitements opened on her path: the enthusiasm with which she entered into the cause of Monmouth had completely blotted from her memory all remaining traces of her old fears; and now, when-her confidence in the success of Monmouth had begun to be shaken, and her anxiety was just returning, this dreadful name came on her ear like a terrible spell-word, reviving old apprehensions and awakening new. "Is it possible?" she thought; "is he amongst the foes of Monmouth 1 Who is there that can tell what fearful chance may yet enable ...
