Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drunkard and His Responsibility It will be my purpose in the following pages to discuss this subject, not generally or chiefly in its relations to society or the family, but rather in relation to the nature of the condition of drunkenness, and its influence upon the individual who may be affected by it. Indeed, if I mistake not, the point on which we are most interested is embraced in the last word of the heading, namely, the matter of responsibility. Is the drunkard responsible for continuing to remain one, or is be affected with such a form of disease as to free him from responsibility? Again, has he a less degree of responsibility on account of his condition than others would have, or should he be held to full account for his misdemeanors? This I conceive to be the point of largest interest at the present time concerning the whole subject, inasmuch as on its decision depends, in a measure at least, the course to be followed by society in its treatment of this class of its members. It also necessarily removes our discussion largely from the realm of morals and bears it over into that of disease; for if there is no disease, and the individual still retains the full use of his physical and mental powers, then he must be held responsible to the same extent as others. If, on the other hand, he is diseased, the question is, to what extent is he so, and how does such disease modify responsibility? It may be well, as preliminary to the discussion of these portions of the general subject, to prepare the way by making certain statements which will serve to prevent my being misunderstood, and also limit somewhat the range of the paper. The result is a readable crash course in randomness.” —The New York Times Book Review With the born storyteller's command of narrative and imaginative approach, Leonard Mlodinow vividly demonstrates how our lives are profoundly informed by chance and randomness and how everything from wine ratings and corporate success to school grades and political polls are less reliable than we believe. By showing us the true nature of chance and revealing the psychological illusions that cause us to misjudge the world around us, Mlodinow gives us the tools we need to make more informed decisions. From the classroom to the courtroom and from financial markets to supermarkets, Mlodinow's intriguing and illuminating look at how randomness, chance, and probability affect our daily lives will intrigue, awe, and inspire.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Responsibility: A Novel England, formalities, and release. I am unfit for further service, without scars to show, returnable to civil life at forty-nine and with liberty to wring out of the world whatever entertainment or what further bitterness it yet may hold. My chief feeling is that I must be good for effort yet, that life cannot be over. There is atonement to be made, an atonement non cloistral, giving scope for effort. I have little patience with those natural heartaches to which the most innocent flesh is heir, the unmerited sufferings that are a part of normal inheritance. My sympathies are with the man who has only himself and not Providence to blame, with the well-meaning blackguard, the rascal who has found it easier to deceive the world than to silence the promptings of his better nature. It is twenty years since I sat under parson, but the worn phrases die hard. Jargon sticks like a burr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: 'Generous, enjoyable and well informed.' Observer '500 expertly potted plots and personal comments on a wide range of pop and proper prose fiction.' The Times ___________________________________________________________ Ranging all the way from Aaron's Rod to Zuleika Dobson, via The Devil Rides Out and Middlemarch, literary connoisseur and sleuth John Sutherland offers his very personal guide to the most rewarding, most remarkable and, on occasion, most shamelessly enjoyable works of fiction ever written. He brilliantly captures the flavour of each work and assesses its relative merits and demerits. He shows how it fits into a broader context and he offers endless snippets of intriguing information: did you know, for example, that the Nazis banned Bambi or that William Faulkner wrote As I Lay Dying on an upturned wheelbarrow; that Voltaire completed Candide in three days, or that Anna Sewell was paid £20 for Black Beauty? It is also effectively a history of the novel in 500 or so wittily informative, bite-sized pieces. Encyclopaedic and entertaining by turns, this is a wonderful dip-in book, whose opinions will inform and on occasion, no doubt, infuriate. __________________________________________________ 'Anyone hooked on fiction should be warned: this book will feed your addiction.' Mail on Sunday 'A dazzling array of genres, periods, styles and tastes... chatty, insightful, unprejudiced (but not uncritical) and wise.' Times Literary Supplement
