Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who work with and train horses on a regular basis are likely constantly searching for new ways to make inroads and find answers when faced with tough training or behavior problems. Grand Prix dressage rider and performer Yvonne Barteau has trained her share of horses over the years—from off-track racing Thoroughbreds, to Arabians, to Friesians, to Warmbloods—and she asserts that everything that needs to be known about effectively training a horse is already known…by any horse. “Each horse,” says Barteau, “will know and respect the person who figures out how to train him, if that person is fair. The best trainers are not only ‘horse whisperers,’ they are listeners. And readers. They listen to what the horse has to say. They can read horse body language and behavior patterns. They are calm and they stay calm under pressure. How did they learn that? By studying horses. Over time the horses told them how to be a horse trainer and they listened.” Barteau believes that every dressage rider can learn to listen and read, and so experience greater success and partnership with his or her horse. In this book Barteau has used her knowledge and decades of experience and success in and out of the dressage ring to help put to paper what 10 different dressage horses would say to you about horse training if they could. Through the dressage horse’s mouth, from his point of view, readers learn: how simple things really are and how complicated we make them; the value of routine, consequence, and peace; the importance of leadership, fairness, and trust; the need for your sense of responsibility to match your ambition; plus, what kinds of rewards really work and what frightens, annoys, or causes horses to disregard us altogether. If you listen properly, horses will tell you how to train them. This book is a published declaration of their needs as our athletic partners, fellow competitors, and friends.

Book excerpt: Dressage training: Background and Tips All riders, whether competing or riding for pleasure, want to have a tractable, relaxed and motivated horse when they are ready to get into the saddle. This depends primarily on the riders' understanding of training and training methods. The more riders know about their horse's physiology and psyche, the better their understanding of these training methods. By following the practical advice in this book, riders will be able to achieve their desired training goals most efficiently, while at the same time handling their horses gently and keeping them physically and mentally sound. The authors: Knut Kruger learned the correct and gentle method of training dressage horses from Paul Stecken, who emphasized the importance of repeatedly riding young and even older horses in a lengthening position. Paul Stecken had a training system for older horses that slowly and systematically prepared them for correct collection by teaching them to bend the haunches and raise the forehand. Knut Kruger works with the training scale to teach horses the principles of rhythm, relaxation, impulsion, etc. and keep them healthy in mind and body while doing so. He also takes horses that have suffered under severe training methods and guides them to recovery. Prof. Dr. Konstanze Kruger studied veterinary medicine, has been riding since she was young and was active in 3-day eventing. From 2005 - 2012 she worked on the social behavior and mental abilities of horses for the Zoological Institute at the University of Regensburg. Since 2012 she has been working at the Applied University of Nurtingen as a professor for equine behavior. Further Information can be found on her website equine-behaviour.de and in Wikipedia. In this book, Prof. Dr. Konstanze Kruger gives a clear description of the medical basis for her training methods and how to use them. Together the Kruegers managed a riding school near Regensburg (Bavaria) from 1999 to 2005, and the experience they gained there, plus their veterinary and equitation backgrounds, has culminated in many practical training tips that they have included in this book. A "must" for riders who want to exercise and train their horses for dressage. "This book is also used as a training manual for the state-run driving school in Austria and is recommended reading for drivers and riders. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine the anatomy of a horse from an entirely different perspective. This intriguing and original explanation of the 11 internal body systems of horses shows them painted on the outside to describe everything on the inside. The horse is a highly sophisticated living organism so to enable him to reach his full athletic performance and give him a happy, healthy quality of life it is vital to understand both his capabilities and limitations within the context of his structure and function. Gillian Higgins turns her trademark technique of painting internal diagrams directly onto live horses to show how all the systems work, and work together, to influence performance and reduce the risk of injury. Divided into 12 chapters, Horse Anatomy for Performance combines high quality photographs and intricate paintings with top tips and fascinating facts to provide a practical and useful guide to horse anatomy. Visually appealing, original and easily understandable, the book explains how anatomy influences the way we manage, ride and train our horses. This book is a sequel to How Your Horse Moves by Gillian Higgins; together the books provide a comprehensive guide to horse anatomy in action "Finally a book where you can learn how your horse ticks - inside out - and it is easy to understand and fun to read. A must for every serious equestrian." --Dr W. Bechtolsheimer
