Book excerpt: Neon rain slicked the alleyway, reflecting the pulsating glow of the omnipresent Somniloquies logos emblazoned on every surface. Xander squeezed his paint-stained fingers around the worn leather satchel, anxiety prickling his skull like static. He shouldn't be here, hunched in this reeking back alley, waiting for a dream dealer in a city where nightmares wore Gucci and REM cycles were commodities. Yet, here he was, a starving artist chased by shadows and creditors alike, his only asset a paintbrush dipped in desperation.

Book excerpt: When Edwin Sutherland introduced the concept of white-collar crime, he referred to the respectable businessmen of his day who had, in the course of their occupations, violated the law whenever it was advantageous to do so. Yet since the founding of the American Republic, numerous otherwise respectable individuals had been involved in white-collar criminality. Using organized smuggling as an exemplar, this narrative history of American smuggling establishes that white-collar crime has always been an integral part of American history when conditions were favorable to violating the law. This dark side of the American Dream originally exposed itself in colonial times with elite merchants of communities such as Boston trafficking contraband into the colonies. It again came to the forefront during the Embargo of 1809 and continued through the War of 1812, the Civil War, nineteenth century filibustering, the Mexican Revolution and Prohibition. The author also shows that the years of illegal opium trade with China by American merchants served as precursor to the later smuggling of opium into the United States. The author confirms that each period of smuggling was a link in the continuing chain of white-collar crime in the 150 years prior to Sutherland’s assertion of corporate criminality.

Book excerpt: There is always a time for love . . . Victoria Carswell will not be bound by society’s dictates, least of all the clothes that constrict her. But while brazenly skinny-dipping in view of her beloved Bodiam Castle—abandoned for many years, or so she thinks—she’s overcome by a distinct—and thrilling—sensation of being watched. When she decides to explore the castle, the ancient hallways and dusty byways take her on an unexpected journey into the distant past . . . Swept back from her staid Victorian era to the comparatively bawdy times of Georgian England, Victoria is quickly wooed by a pirate smuggler. In Falcon’s arms, she revels in expressing herself unreservedly in a liberating spirit of adventure and recklessness. And she is rightly devastated when she suddenly finds herself back in her world, separated from her pirate seemingly forever. But she may learn that time might just be on her side . . . With her wild raven tresses flowing about her shoulders and her sweet curves barely covered by a buckskin tunic, the half-breed beauty made sharing close quarters a trying test of his nobility. But the rebel privateer wouldn't let her go until he found out how much she knew about his operation. And once he'd had a taste of her soft red lips and felt her slender body trembling in his arms, he knew he couldn't release her until he'd coaxed every tender secret from her silken flesh as well! Seductive Prisoner The handsome captain had locked Molly inside his cramped cabin to keep her safe from his lusty crew, but there was no one to protect the innocent captive from the primitive passion Bran's very nearness evoked. His eyes were as blue as the sea, and they seemed to awaken her very soul. Molly yearned to hate the brash buccaneer, yet with each passing day his hot embraces turned her heart traitor. . .and had her longing for the night when he'd unleash her searing desire and brand her forever as the. . . Book excerpt: Goodfellas meets Savages meets Catch Me If You Can in this true tale of high-stakes smuggling from pot’s outlaw years. Richard Stratton was the unlikeliest of kingpins. A clean-cut Wellesley boy who entered outlaw culture on a trip to Mexico, he saw his search for a joint morph into a thrill-filled dope run smuggling two kilos across the border in his car door. He became a member of the Hippie Mafia, traveling the world to keep America high, living the underground life while embracing the hippie credo, rejecting hard drugs in favor of marijuana and hashish. With cameos by Whitey Bulger and Norman Mailer, Smuggler’s Blues tells Stratton’s adventure while centering on his last years as he travels from New York to Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley to source and smuggle high-grade hash in the midst of civil war, from the Caribbean to the backwoods of Maine, and from the Chelsea Hotel to the Plaza as his fortunes rise and fall. All the while he is being pursued by his nemesis, a philosophical DEA agent who respects him for his good business practices. A true-crime story that reads like fiction, Smuggler’s Blues is a psychedelic road trip through international drug smuggling, the hippie underground, and the war on weed. As Big Marijuana emerges, it brings to vivid life an important chapter in pot’s cultural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book Smugglers is the nearly unbelievable story of ghetto residents who rescued thousands of rare books and manuscripts-first from the Nazis and then from the Soviets-by hiding them on their bodies, burying them in bunkers, and smuggling them across borders. It is a tale of heroism and resistance, of friendship and romance, and of unwavering devotion-including the readiness to risk one's life-to literature and art. And it is entirely true. Based on Jewish, German, and Soviet documents, including diaries, letters, memoirs, and the author's interviews with several of the story's participants, The Book Smugglers chronicles the daring activities of a group of poets turned partisans and scholars turned smugglers in Vilna, "The Jerusalem of Lithuania." The rescuers were pitted against Johannes Pohl, a Nazi "expert" on the Jews, who had been dispatched to Vilna by the Nazi looting agency, Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg, to organize the seizure of the city's great collections of Jewish books. Pohl and his Einsatzstab staff planned to ship the most valuable materials to Germany and incinerate the rest. The Germans used forty ghetto inmates as slave-laborers to sort, select, pack, and transport the materials, either to Germany or to nearby paper mills. This group, nicknamed "the Paper Brigade," and informally led by poet Shmerke Kaczerginski, a garrulous, street-smart adventurer and master of deception, smuggled thousands of books and manuscripts past German guards. If caught, the men would have faced death by firing squad at Ponar, the mass-murder site outside of Vilna. To store the rescued manuscripts, poet Abraham Sutzkever helped build an underground book-bunker sixty feet beneath the Vilna ghetto. Kaczerginski smuggled weapons as well, using the group's worksite, the former building of the Yiddish Scientific Institute, to purchase arms for the ghetto's secret partisan organization. All the while, both men wrote poetry that was recited and sung by the fast-dwindling population of ghetto inhabitants. With the Soviet "liberation" of Vilna (now known as Vilnius), the Paper Brigade thought themselves and their precious cultural treasures saved-only to learn that their new masters were no more welcoming toward Jewish culture than the old, and the books must now be smuggled out of the USSR. Thoroughly researched by the foremost scholar of the Vilna Ghetto-a writer of exceptional daring, style, and reach-The Book Smugglers is an epic story of human heroism, a little-known tale from the blackest days of the war.
