The subject has attained something of a status as a scientific study, and significant investigative and experimental work has been done. More than that, trained men and women in increasing numbers have been devoting themselves to the endeavor to work out in churches and Sunday schools the practical problems of organization and method. It would seem that the time has come to present to the large body of workers in the field of religious education some of the results of the studies and practice of those who have attained a measure of educational success. With this end in view the present series of books on "Principles and Methods of Religious Education" has been undertaken. It is intended that these books, while thoroughly scientific in character, shall be at the same time popular in presentation, so that they may be available to Sunday-school and church workers everywhere. The endeavor is definitely made to take into account the small school with meager equipment, as well as to hold before the larger schools the ideals of equipment and training. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatized Bible Stories for Young People The dramatizations given here have been made very simple. The words of the story have been taken, for the most part, directly from the Bible narrative, so that the youth is learning Scripture as well as a story. A good preparation for the dramatization is to call together all who are to have a part in the production, and read or tell them the whole story before the parts are assigned. By this plan each is made familiar with the story and its message before he begins to prepare his own part. Few rehearsals are necessary. The ideal way to dramatize a story is to have no printed parts assigned but to allow each person to select the character he prefers and to interpret the part as it appeals to him. This is the most successful plan for use with children. To follow such a method, story-telling or group study must precede the dramatizations. This is often not feasible or easily arranged for young people, so this book, with its suggestions, is designed to help the busy teacher, director or preacher who is interested in giving the young people a chance to help in a way that is natural and enjoyable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Good Samaritan: And Other Bible Stories Dramatized A child cannot love Christ until he knows Him. There is no knowledge without an introduction. To introduce the child to his loving Heavenly Father is the great aim of the Elementary Sunday School teacher. But some of the introductions have been given to unhearing ears, and the ear is the gateway to the child's soul upon which we have largely depended. The lesson given by a would-be teacher has often gone in one ear and out the other without reaching the heart or even the brain of the little disciple-to-be. Graded lessons are helping to solve the problem and are suggesting that there are other gateways to the child's soul. God has given five senses, all of which are hungry and must be fed. The constant use of one only is most unnatural and well nigh impossible in contemplation of our mighty task. To sit as a passive bucket and be pumped into, said Carlyle, is exhilarating to no creature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In acting Bible stories they learn how intimately the past is linked to the present, and how the struggles of to - day after truth, courage, love, are like the struggles Of the patriarchs and prophets. The stories become more vivid, their charm grows, as we study them in action - our own action. And when we have finished the production of a Bible play a portion of the most beautiful Of all literature is ours forever. In a portion Of the plays they act out, the children should, under wise leadership, devise and prepare their own parts and lines. Along with these spontaneously planned representations, however, should come a fair proportion of carefully prepared simple artistic plays adapted to the age and understanding of the child and calculated to teach the lesson desired. Besides teaching their own particular lessons, such plays will serve as a model and standard for the children in preparing their own presentations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Stories in Bible Language Many persons will be surprised, as the Compiler of this little book was, to learn that there is no such work already in use. There are, it is true, many children's books containing Bible stories told in modern language, but the objections to Bible stories so told are manifold. No language is so simple or SO condensed as Bible language, and any paraphrase of it must either spread the same amount of matter over a larger surface, or lose some portion of the matter itself in keeping it Within the same limits. Either one or two only of such amplified paraphrases suffice to fill a child's book, to the exclusion of others, or the book contains a number of stories which are only half told. Again, it is almost impossible, in rewriting a story, not to tinge it with the cast of mind and peculiar religious opinions of the rewriter. Parents have not infrequently, therefore, objected to such paraphrases, that their teachings were not such as they believed were to be found in the story itself, or were sometimes not in accordance with their own views of religious truth. There are other children's books containing one or more Bible stories, or parts of stories, given, as in this book, in Bible language; but the compiler of the present collection has been able to find none which aimed at the same completeness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Stories: To Read and Tell This edition of Old Testament Stories is intended chiefly for use in school and college classes, but it is hoped that the general reader may also find it to his liking. It has been pref pared in accordance with the recommendation of the National Conference on Uniform Entrance Requirements in English, which has assigned readings from the Old Testament, com prising at least the chief episodes in Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Daniel, together with the books of Ruth and Esther. It has been the plan of the editor to group these episodes, as far as possible, around the great men and women of the Bible. By this arrangement, none of the interest of the inci dents of each hero story, as a separate story, is lost; and much is gained by compelling the student to associate them in his mind as parts of one story or biography. Beyond an index of proper names giving meaning and pronunciation, no notes have been deemed necessary. The text is that of the King James or Authorized Version. The italics and chapter and verse divisions of this version, however, have been discarded, and the text is grouped in paragraphs according to subjects, Besides omissions which were inevitable according to the plan of selection, the reader may note a few paraphrases and some omissions which were thought necessary in preparing the book for high school classes of both sexes. In the introduction is given a brief account of the Jewish nation in Palestine, of the origin and development of the Bible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Stories and Scenes: For Young People These scenes from Bible story do not claim to be original. I have only taken from different good authorities such facts and illustrations as young people are not likely to dig out of the larger works for themselves; but I trust that many of my readers will be interested enough in the extracts given to read such books as Canon Farrar's "Early Days of Christianity," "Life of Christ," and "Life and Works of St. Paul;" also Geikie's "Hours with the Bible," and his "Life of Christ." Another book which throws much light on the manners and customs of Bible times is Kitto's "Daily Bible Illustrations." Such books make the Bible more real to us, and if you cultivate a taste for something a little deeper than mere easy reading, so much the better for your mental digestion. The stories are written purposely in very different styles, for some young people like to have things told in a dramatic way, while others prefer to read the facts and clothe those facts by the help of their own imagination; still the only imaginary character introduced is that of Simon in the last two stories, every other name given is that of a true historical person. I would like to be sure that each story will teach its own beautiful lesson to everyone who reads it; but I have not tried to point out the lesson. I know by my own children how much young people dislike "preaching." But will you not reward me for not lecturing by trying to find the lesson of each story? You will hear the Bible, especially the Old Testament, lightly spoken of by men of considerable ability and learning; but before you let their doubts and insinuations influence you, look and see how Jesus regarded the Scriptures. He said: "The Scripture cannot be broken;" again and again He strengthened Himself by remembering what God had written in the Old Testament. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Autobiographies and Other Bible Stories Children like to impersonate other people. They enjoy nothing better than to play that for the time being they are some one else. The little girl is mother of her doll. The boy is the big Indian, Massasoit or Samoset and, if he can don an imita tion suit of buckskin With fringes and feathers, the illusion is all the dearer to him. If not carried too far, and if it does not involve impersonations of unworthy characters, such play and pretending are a useful part of education. Why should not this natural element to Which the child takes so readily be used in the religious train ing of boys and girls? This book is an attempt, and the first of its kind, so far as I know, to teach the Bible stories as auto biographies. The characters tell their own stories, and the child as he reads can easily imagine him self to be telling the story of his own life, and Will become as interested in it as in the story of Jack the giant-killer or the adventures of Cinderella.
