Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of Christopher Marlowe: Selected; With a Prefatory Notice, Biographical and Critical The Massacre of Paris, and Edward II. The drama of Dido, Queen of Carthage, may have been begun by the poet in his first and feeblest period of authorship, but it was found unfinished at his death. Nash is thought to have helped to complete it, and possibly the duller parts of this incoherent play were written by him. Besides these dramas, Marlowe made poems and translations. He began to tell in most exquisite verse the lovely story of Hero and Leander. But he was only able to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This major work brings together, for the first time in a single volume, all the recognized sources of Marlowe's dramatic work. Many of the forty-two texts presented here are of outstanding interest in their own right. Together they illuminate the cultural milieu which fostered Marlowe's talent, and deepen our appreciation of his dramatic methods. * Each of the texts is accessibly presented for the modern reader and is fully annotated. * Works in Latin or foreign vernaculars are translated, many for the first time, and modern spelling and punctuation are used throughout. * The sources for each play are examined individually and are thoroughly edited. Few libraries provide the range of sources contained in this one volume. The editors include texts of works such as the English Faust-Book from which Marlowe borrowed heavily, and provide substantial extracts from other books with which he was no doubt familiar. This book is an invaluable resource for all those interested in Marlowe and the development of Elizabethan theatre.

Book excerpt: This book offers a lively introduction to all of the plays of Christopher Marlowe and to the central concerns of his age, many of which are still important to us--religious uncertainty, the clash between Islam and Christianity, ideas of sexuality, and the role of the marginalised inidividual in society. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of Marlowe's work and its cultural contexts: Marlowe's life and death; the Marlowe canon; the theatrical contexts and stage history of the plays; Marlowe's interest in old and new branches of knowledge; the ways in which he transgresses against established norms and values; and the major issues which have been raised in critical discussions of his plays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography: a masterly account of Marlowe's work and life and the world in which he lived Shakespeare's contemporary, Christopher Marlowe revolutionized English drama and poetry, transforming the Elizabethan stage into a place of astonishing creativity. The outline of Marlowe's life, work, and violent death are known, but few of the details that explain why his writing and ideas made him such a provocateur in the Elizabethan era have been available until now. In this absorbing consideration of Marlowe and his times, David Riggs presents Marlowe as the language's first poetic dramatist whose desires proved his undoing. In an age of tremendous cultural change in Europe when Cervantes wrote the first novel and Copernicus demonstrated a world subservient to other nonreligious forces, Catholics and Protestants battled for control of England and Elizabeth's crown was anything but secure. Into this whirlwind of change stepped Marlowe espousing sexual freedom and atheism. His beliefs proved too dangerous to those in power and he was condemned as a spy and later murdered. In The World of Christopher Marlowe, Riggs's exhaustive research digs deeply into the mystery of how and why Marlowe was killed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Authorship Controversy is about how a historical deception has survived as a tradition for nearly 400 years, despite numerous challenges. I am referring to the “tradition” that the works attributed to William Shakespeare of Stratford-on-Avon were actually written by him, despite no evidence of schooling or access to libraries, lack of recognition by other playwrights when he died, and much more. The editors of the definitive decennial edition of his works, together with virtually all other scholars of English Literature, have declared that this rural fellow is the true author. This book offers irrefutable mathematical evidence that Christopher Marlowe -- graduate of Cambridge University, the inventor of iambic pentameter, and the author of seven important plays before “Shakespeare” had ever been heard of -- did not die in late May 1593, as officially reported by the Queen’s Coroner. How do we know that Marlowe was alive and the author of the sonnets? He announced his authorship in ciphers that are clear and unmistakable once you find the key. The key was found by an independent scholar named Peter Bull in 2005. He self-published his findings because the mainstream publishers were not interested, and very few people bothered to read his work. I did, and I have now undertaken to make his discovery a little more accessible to the general reader.
