Book excerpt: Scholars have associated Calvinism with print and literary cultures, with republican, liberal, and participatory political cultures, with cultures of violence and vandalism, enlightened cultures, cultures of social discipline, secular cultures, and with the emergence of capitalism. Reflecting on these arguments, the essays in this volume recognize that Reformed Protestantism did not develop as a uniform tradition but varied across space and time. The authors demonstrate that multiple iterations of Calvinism developed and impacted upon differing European communities that were experiencing social and cultural transition. They show how these different forms of Calvinism were shaped by their adherents and opponents, and by the divergent political and social contexts in which they were articulated and performed. Recognizing that Reformed Protestantism developed in a variety of cultural settings, this volume analyzes the ways in which it related to the multi-confessional cultural environment that prevailed in Europe after the Reformation.

Sir John Frugal and his daughters' spurned suitors return from their travels disguised as Amerindians. Their feigned godliness is contrasted with the failure of Christian charity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tamer Tamed is the subtitle or alternative title to John Fletcher's The Woman's Prize, a comedic sequel and reply to The Taming of the Shrew. The plot switches the gender roles of Shakespeare's play: the women seek to tame the men. Katherine (the "shrew" of the original) has died, and Petruchio takes a second wife, Maria. Maria denounces her former mildness and vows not to sleep with Petruchio until she "turn him and bend him as [she] list, and mold him into a babe again." After many comedic exchanges and plot twists, Petruchio is finally "tamed" in the eyes of Maria, and the play ends with the two reconciled. The play is seen to reflect how society's views of women, femininity, and "domestic propriety" were beginning to change. It is said that Fletcher wrote this play to attract Shakespeare's attention - the two went on to collaborate on at least three plays together. This brand new New Mermaid edition offers unique and fresh insight into the critical interpretation of the play. It builds on current critical foundations (the relationship with Taming of the Shrew, gender relations etc) and suggests different areas of interest (popular associations of the shrew, the question of reputation, and a re-examination of the play's structure). as well as examining stage history and recent productions.

Book excerpt: Once famed for its obscenity, this vigorous and enjoyable play traces the fortunes of two brothers shipwrecked in a foreign land. By turns poignant and risqué, sentimental and satiraical, its beautifully crafted plot embodies the collaborative art of its authors. It was given a staged reading in 1998 as part of the Globe Education's on-going program to record with professional casts all non-Shakespearean plays of the English Renaissance.

A spirited celebration of the immigrants who have shaped the United States, O Pioneers! is a masterpiece by a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Book excerpt: The Roman Actor explores the balance between private and public moralities, effectively condemns tyranny, and defends plays, anatomizing both the theatre of power and the power of theatre. This new Revels Plays volume provides a modernized text with a thorough introduction that sets out Massinger's intervention in the political tensions of his own time and examines his clear-eyed portrayal of the pleasures and perils of performance. It also includes a detailed commentary on the play and an appendix discussing the play's textual history. It focuses on the play's theatrical life in its own time and ours, and gives a detailed stage history including an interview with Sir Antony Sher, who played the tyrannical Roman emperor, Domitian, in the Royal Shakespeare Company's acclaimed production in 2002.
