Book Synopsis Theatre in Balzac's La Comedie humaine by : Linzy Erika Dickinson
Download or read book Theatre in Balzac's La Comedie humaine written by Linzy Erika Dickinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study of Balzac's work to examine theatre in La Comédie humaine both as a theme in itself and for its influence on Balzac's techniques and modes of presentation in his novels, and to demonstrate the symbiotic influence of novel and stage on Balzac's work as a playwright and novelist. It will be of interest not only to students of Balzac, but also to students of nineteenth-century theatre and history. The introduction gives an account of Balzac's experience of the theatre; the first three chapters examine the historicity of Balzac's portrayal of the theatre world and how this portrayal serves his wider narrative purpose; the two following chapters demonstrate how and why Balzac relies on the theatre to provide a rich tissue of metaphor and bank of expressive devices with which to communicate his critique of society; finally the work shows how Balzac succeeded in bringing to the stage the same scrutiny of the capitalist ethos which underpins La Comédie humaine. An index of references to playwrights, plays, actors and stage characters in La Comédie humaine is given in an appendix.
Book Synopsis Evolution, Sacrifice, and Narrative by : Carol Colatrella
Download or read book Evolution, Sacrifice, and Narrative written by Carol Colatrella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990. Balzac, Zola and Faulkner all drew upon the principles of evolutionary theory to represent man’s place in nature and his struggle for survival in their major series La Comèdie humaine, Rougon-Macquart and the Yoknapatawpha fiction. This book focuses on the ‘first’ novels in each author’s series (La Père Goriot, La Fortune des Rougon and Flags in the Dust) and considers how each novel relates to its series and derives a definition of the naturalistic roman-fleuve. To describe this development, the issues of how a scientific idea becomes refracted in a literary genre and how the naturalistic novel developed out of the realistic novel are considered.

Book Synopsis Reappearing Characters in Nineteenth-Century French Literature by : Sotirios Paraschas
Download or read book Reappearing Characters in Nineteenth-Century French Literature written by Sotirios Paraschas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the phenomenon of the reappearance of characters in nineteenth-century French fiction. It approaches this from a hitherto unexplored perspective: that of the twin history of the aesthetic notion of originality and the legal notion of literary property. While the reappearance of characters in the works of canonical authors such as Honoré de Balzac and Émile Zola is usually seen as a device which transforms the individual works of an author into a coherent whole, this book argues that the unprecedented systematisation of the reappearance of characters in the nineteenth century has to be seen within a wider cultural, economic, and legal context. While fictional characters are seen as original creations by their authors, from a legal point of view they are considered to be ‘ideas’ which are not protected and can be appropriated by anyone. By co-examining the reappearance of characters in the work of canonical authors and their reappearances in unauthorised appropriations, such as stage adaptations and sequels, this book discusses a series of issues that have shaped our understanding of authorship, originality, and property.

Download or read book Novel Stages written by Pratima Prasad and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Novel Stages examine the myriad intersections between drama and the novel in nineteenth-century France, a period when the two genres were in constant engagement with one another. The collection is unified by common intellectual concerns: the inscription of theatrical esthetics within the novel; the common practice among nineteenth-century novelists of adapting their works for the stage; and the novel's engagement with popular forms of theater. The essays provide insight into a specific aspect of the relationship between the theater and the novel in the nineteenth century. Their distinct perspectives form an overview of the literary landscape of nineteenth-century France, and demonstrate many ways in which all major nineteenth-century French novelists, including Hugo, Flaubert, Sand, and Zola, participated in the theatrical culture of their century.

Book excerpt: Father Goriot (1835) is a novel by French author Honoré de Balzac. An early work in his La Comédie humaine sequence, Father Goriot has since become one of Balzac’s most critically and commercially successful novels. It contains several characters who appear throughout his other books and is considered to be the first novel in which he perfected his hallmark realist style. The novel, set in Paris, follows Eugène de Rastignac, a young law student who lives at a boarding house owned by a widow named Madame Vauquer. Her other residents include Jean-Joachim Goriot, a retired businessman whose fortune has been spent on his two adult daughters, and Vautrin, a hardened and mysterious criminal. As Rastignac navigates urban life, he develops a fascination with high society that soon turns into an unhealthy obsession with joining the ranks of the wealthy. Although he falls in love with Goriot’s daughter Delphine, a married woman, Rastignac is pressured by Vautrin to court the young unmarried Victorine. Proposing they attempt to steal her family’s fortune—for which he offers to have her brother murdered—Vautrin does his best to corrupt the young and ambitious Rastignac, who will gradually be forced to choose between a life of luxury and a life of moral decency. In the background of their plotting, the story of Father Goriot unfolds, a tragic portrait of a man who gives everything to his family while wanting nothing more than their love and respect in return. Father Goriot is a complex yet effective novel. Criticized for extensive pessimism upon publication, its reputation for brutal honesty and social realism have aided its reception in recent years, and it is now considered one of Balzac’s most important works. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Honoré de Balzac’s Father Goriot is a classic of French literature reimagined for modern readers.
Book Synopsis Eugenie Grandet by : Honoré de Balzac
Download or read book Eugenie Grandet written by Honoré de Balzac and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugénie Grandet (1833) is a novel by French author Honoré de Balzac. Written as Balzac began to formulate the grand scale of his La Comédie humaine sequence, Eugénie Grandet was eventually tied into the universe of his epic realist masterpiece, a holistic vision of nineteenth-century French society which sought to observe the consequences of the political, religious, and economic shifts of the Revolution and in its aftermath. This novel looks to the moral failings of a particular nouveau riche family, whose accumulation of wealth has quickly erased any sense of their working-class origins. After the Revolution, master cooper Felix Grandet married the daughter of a successful merchant, ascended in the political and social life of the town of Saumur, and quietly amassed an immense wealth through industry and inheritances from his wife’s family. Now an old man, Felix possesses a fortune he feels no inclination to use, not even to improve the daily lives of his ailing wife and young adult daughter Eugénie, who faces frequent incursions from local suitors intent on marrying her to attain her father’s wealth. When Felix’s nephew Charles arrives from Paris with a letter from the patriarch’s estranged brother Guillaume, tragic circumstances force him to choose between habitual greed and the immense pressure of performing what for anyone else would be a basic act of generosity. Eugénie Grandet is a powerful story of fortune, power, and the ease with which these lead to moral failure. Published at the dawning of Balzac’s most productive and critically-acclaimed period, this novel is not only a good introduction to his lengthy La Comédie humaine sequence, but an irreplaceable work of nineteenth-century realist literature. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Honoré de Balzac’s Eugénie Grandet is a classic of French literature reimagined for modern readers.
Book Synopsis The Seduction of Fiction by : Jean-François Vernay
Download or read book The Seduction of Fiction written by Jean-François Vernay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By meshing psychology with literary analysis, this book inspires us to view the reading of fictional works as an emotional and seductive affair between reader and writer. Arguing that current teaching practices have contributed to the current decline in the study of literature, Jean-François Vernay’s plea brings a refreshing perspective by seeking new directions and conceptual tools to highlight the value of literature. Interdisciplinary in focus and relevant to timely discussions of the vitality between emotion and literary studies, particularly within the contexts of psychology, affect studies, and cognitive studies, this book will open up a space in which the formation of our emotions can be openly examined and discussed.
