He was worth everything. But then he broke my heart as easily as I fell for him. Book excerpt: Integrating both Maori myth and New Zealand reality, The Bone People became the most successful novel in New Zealand publishing history when it appeared in 1984. Set on the South Island beaches of New Zealand, a harsh environment, the novel chronicles the complicated relationships between three emotional outcasts of mixed European and Maori heritage. Kerewin Holmes is a painter and a loner, convinced that "to care for anything is to invite disaster." Her isolation is disrupted one day when a six-year-old mute boy, Simon, breaks into her house. The sole survivor of a mysterious shipwreck, Simon has been adopted by a widower Maori factory worker, Joe Gillayley, who is both tender and horribly brutal toward the boy. Through shifting points of view, the novel reveals each character's thoughts and feelings as they struggle with the desire to connect and the fear of attachment. Compared to the works of James Joyce in its use of indigenous language and portrayal of consciousness, The Bone People captures the soul of New Zealand. After twenty years, it continues to astonish and enrich readers around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every society promulgates culture to represent its shared values, traditions, and customs which define the way of life of her people. In some practices, cultural norms might be used to repress and intimidate certain members of society. Such was the culture of the Okale kingdom, where women's rights were suppressed and infringed on. Women and girls were seen only as marriage materials. Thus, education for girls was barely nonexistent. Ekiose, a brilliant daughter and fearless thinker of Okale, rose from ashes to challenge the cultural practices she claimed were used to rob women of their fundamental human rights and freedom of expression. In one of her outreach forums, she met a human rights advocate lawyer called Prince Ugo, a native of Abbar kingdom. They soon fell in love and planned to spend their lives together. However, their plan was cut short when Prince Idaghe, a native and crown prince of the Okale people, also desired to marry her. This controversy led to meetings between both families to resolve their differences. The purpose was to avert war which was acceptable as a last resort for resolving such conflict whereby the winner marries the woman. But Prince Ugo refused to back down, citing that he was unfairly treated because he was an outsider. When war became inevitable, the king's counselors, through divination, advised the crown prince to hunt down a lion with his bare hand as a necessity for his victory. They fought, and the battle ended in Prince Idaghe's favor. Prince Ugo, who was at the pinnacle of success in his legal profession, was severely maimed and lost it all for the sake of a woman. He allowed pride to rule his life and to dictate his decision-making process. Pride is a disease of the heart that, if not controlled, could lead someone to an early grave or some severe life consequences. Such was Prince Ugo's case, which objected to every meaningful measure to avert the fight that almost killed him. This book approaches the life storm by using the life experiences of Prince Ugo to illustrate how adversity could devastate anyone if pride and lack of contentment are not dealt with. While everyone desires to live a fruitful, stress-free life, crises might hit at any time. It might come about due to poor choices or circumstances simply beyond the person's control. A beacon of hope is always at the end of the tunnel if the victim doesn't allow his condition to hinder his foresight. When Prince Ugo came to his senses, he swallowed his pride and started over again. Through the power of perseverance and innovative ideas, he rose from rags and ashes to uplift his head above the waters that almost swallowed him alive to revolutionize his kingdom for the benefit of his people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The few popular Bible stories about women are often presented in black and white—the women were good or bad, Ruth or Jezebel. But most of us fall somewhere in between these two extremes. Good Girls, Bad Girls invites readers to take a more nuanced look at 12 women in the Old Testament, to explore their lives more deeply in historical context, and to grasp what these stories might mean to women today. T. J. Wray, a biblical scholar, asks readers to consider whether Jezebel was really as bad as generally believed, and includes women ranging from the infamous Delilah to the mysterious Witch of Endor. Impeccably researched and beautifully written, Good Girls, Bad Girls will appeal to both individual readers and groups interested in learning what the Bible really has to say about these twelve important women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Candid and contemporary, this book gives you a Christian place to turn for answers to your most intimate--and embarrassing--questions. Billions of people have had sex. Far fewer have made love. In The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex, author Sheila Wray Gregoire helps women see how sexual intimacy was designed to be physically stupendous but also incredibly intimate. Whether you're about to walk down the aisle, newly married, or you've been married for decades, The Good Girl's Guide to Great Sex will lead you on a wonderful journey of discovery toward the amazing sex life God designed you for. With humor, research, and lots of anecdotes, author Sheila Wray Gregoire helps women see how our culture's version of sex, which concentrates on the physical above all else, makes sex shallow. God, on the other hand, intended sex to unite us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Gregoire walks through these three aspects of sex, showing how to make each amazing, and how to overcome the roadblocks in each area we often encounter. Drawing on survey results from over 2,000 people, she also includes lots of voices from other Good Girls, giving insight into how other women have learned to truly enjoy sex in marriage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morgan offers an authentic and deliciously humorous account of the prostitutes and other "disreputable" women who were the earliest female pioneers of the Far North. At the turn of the century, tens of thousands of Americans left their homes, escaping a worldwide depression & the restraints of the Victorian Era, to stampede to Alaska & the Yukon, where millions of dollars in gold was being discovered in remote, subartic mining camps. Women accompanied the men on the long journey to the Far North--more often prostitutes, dance hall girls & entertainers than respectful wives & schoolteachers. These are the girls of the demimonde, that "half world" of disreputable women who lived on the outskirts of society. Meet "Dutch Kate" Wilson, who pioneered many areas long before the "respectable" women who received credit for getting there first; ruthless heartbreakers Cad Wilson & Rose Blumkin; "French Marie" Larose, who auctioned herself off as a wife to the highest bidder; & Edith Neile, called the "Oregon Mare," famous for both her outlandish behavior & her soft-hearted generosity. These "good time girls" crossed geographic & social frontiers, finding freedom, independence, hardship, heartbreak & sometimes astonishing wealth. They were an important part of this key chapter in the history of the West, which holds a special place in the American imagination.

Christopher. “The way Jack sets out to win Hannah back is really the stuff of true romance.”—NPR Jack Nolan is a gentleman, a journalist, and unlucky in love. His viral success has pigeon-holed him as the how-to guy for a buzzy, internet media company instead of covering hard-hitting politics. Easier said than done when the girl he meets is Hannah Mayfield, and he's not sure he wants her to dump him. Hannah is an extremely successful event planner who's focused on climbing the career ladder. Her firm is one of the most prestigious in the city, and she's determined to secure her next promotion. But Hannah has a bit of an image problem. She needs to show her boss that she has range, including planning dreaded, romantic weddings. Enter Jack. He’s the perfect man to date for a couple weeks to prove to her boss that she’s not scared of feelings. Before Jack and Hannah know it, their fake relationship starts to feel all too real—and neither of them can stand to lose each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stereotype-laden message, delivered through clothes, music, books, and TV, is essentially a continuous plea for girls to put their energies into beauty products, shopping, fashion, and boys. This constant marketing, cheapening of relationships, absence of good women role models, and stereotyping and sexualization of girls is something that parents need to first understand before they can take action. Lamb and Brown teach parents how to understand these influences, give them guidance on how to talk to their daughters about these negative images, and provide the tools to help girls make positive choices about the way they are in the world. In the tradition of books like Reviving Ophelia, Odd Girl Out, Queen Bees and Wannabees that examine the world of girls, this book promises to not only spark debate but help parents to help their daughters.
