Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dominican Church of Santa Maria Novella at Florence: A Historical, Architectural, and Artistic Study Thus then, Part I. Will be found devoted entirely to the earliest history of Santa Maria Novella. The subject here is one which has hardly been touched by any previous writer, and its details seemed remarkable enough to warrant the care and space which have been devoted to the compilation of a kind of Chronicle of the Church from its first establishment to the coming of the Friars. With the year 1221, however, began the history which, under many a vicissitude, has continued down to our own day. Here, of course, selection and compression became necessary; for much was already matter Of common knowledge, and more was tedious and insignificant. In Part II., therefore, I have restricted myself almost entirely to what seemed most noteworthy - the great building period of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries - and within these limits have given my chief attention to the bearing of certain little-known facts upon matters of general interest to all students of Florentine Art. In Part III. The original plan is resumed in a separate and detailed study of the Spanish Chapel. AS one of the Convent buildings it finds its own place and receives passing notice in Part II., but here in the final division of my work, I have felt the more free on this account to write both at large and in detail of that pictorial decoration which has drawn so many students hither, and made this place one of the chief shrines Of Tuscan Art. To furnish a coherent interpretation of these frescoes, as a whole, with reference to the leading ideas which inspire them such has been the final, as indeed it was the original, purpose of my studies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledged as influential within the context of late medieval architecture in Italy, the Dominican church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence has not attracted the substantive architectural study it deserves. The book re-envisions its building history, focusing on crucial stages in its creation: the original model commissioned in the 1270s, and the radical 14th-c. redesign of the nave. Analysis of previously unobserved features illuminates the creative process, enabling a firmer attribution of authorship and a new chronology for its groundbreaking vaulted nave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume proposes, in similar format but with recent photographs, illustrating the painting in their present state, the new edition of the book dedicated by Richard Offner in 1947 to the workshop of Bernardo Daddi, artist very much in demand in the first half of the 14th century. To some 70 pictures catalogued by Offner with entries which are now updated with new data on state and history as well as with bibliography, ten further, hitherto unpublished or little known items are given in this edition. The survey offered here makes the circle of Daddi, where several of chief figures of the Florentine painting in the second half of the Trecento were formed, one of the better known areas of the history of Italian painting of the Middle Age and early Renaissance.

Book excerpt: The magical landscapes and rich culture of Tuscany have fostered the inspiration and settings for literature since the works of the great Florentine poets Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio in the 14th century and has been a magnet for expatriate writers since the arrival in Florence of the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer in 1372. With its historic cities and villages; its verdant countryside and crepuscular coastline; its treasury of art covering five millennia and, above all, its long heritage of authorship, Tuscany one of the most celebrated and well-travelled regions in the world. As the source of the Italian language and birthplace of the Renaissance, Tuscany lies at the historic and cultural heart of Italy, and has remained an irresistible attraction to writers for six centuries. This book is a journey that follows in their footsteps; from John Milton and Thomas Gray to the Brownings, the Shelleys, Charles Dickens, D. H. Lawrence, Thomas Hardy, E. M. Forster, Mark Twain, Muriel Spark and many others.Florence and Tuscany: A Literary Guide for Travellers takes the literary-minded traveller (either in person or in an armchair) on a vivid and illuminating journey, retracing the footsteps of writers who have lived and worked in, or been inspired by, the history and landscape of Tuscany from John Milton and Thomas Gray to the Brownings, the Shelleys, Charles Dickens, D.
